Deadly fishing lures for spring bluefish

Spring means hot bluefish action for anglers along the Atlantic Coast. Blues are a feisty, aggressive species that will hit virtually any bait or lure, but true bluefish fanatics know what artificial plugs and spoons to go to when they want to feel the bite of a nice eating-size snapper bluefish on the line.

Bluefish have an unfair reputation as a table fish but they are great if you cook them correctly. Check out this article for some great bluefish dishes:

As for catching them, blues like lures that have flash and are known to favor the color red. Here are the most deadly bluefish lures. Pier anglers love the Gotcha plugs, inshore boaters and shore fisherman like to cast the Bomber crankbaits, and those who troll the ocean can do no better than the Russelures for bluefish.

Sea Striker® Got-Cha Plug - 3" - Red/White

The Gotcha plug is the number one bluefish lure when fishing from piers and bridges. It also is a great trolling plug. You reel the Gotcha in with sharp jerks on the rod for deadly action with bluefish. The thrill of feeling your Gotcha plug stop dead followed by the thump of a bluefish running will get you addicted to these great lures. Color selection can vary from day to day but it is hard to beat the old red head, white body combo. Also a great lure for Spanish mackerel.

Bomber Saltwater Grade A-Salt Shallow Crankbait - Dark Green Mackerel

This is the deadliest plug for blues in almost any inshore situation. The action resembles a wounded baitfish and if you cast it anywhere near a school of blues they will come running. A hardy saltwater plug that will catch blue after blue, this lure is also effective on trout, redfish, and Spanish mackerel. Cast it around structure and let it go to work. The lure dives about two to four feet and the blues will rise up to blast it.

Russelure Pre-Rigged Metal Wobble Lure Trolling Lures - 6-1/2" - Silver

These are the ultimate trolling lures for catching bluefish from a boat. This lure has amazing action with its wobbly style and comes pre-rigged for the rugged fishing action that chopper bluefish bring. This plug is virtually indestructible which is important when dealing with those chopper bluefish teeth. An all-metal trolling lure that blues will love.

Remember when trolling for bluefish watch for the birds, and don't run your boat over the school but instead work the edges. If you are casting for blues vary your retrieve speed as bluefish can be turned on by a sudden pause or a little extra speed.
