2012 Junior College Baseball Profile: Gloucester County College
The big question for the Gloucester County College Roadrunners heading into the 2012 season was could they reach the NJCAA DIII national title game for the championship fifth time in the last seven years?
GCC—lost to Eastfield College in the title game last year—dropped to 2-2 in title games since 2005. The Roadrunners won the national championship in 2005 and 2010. Overall, GCC has six national crowns and 18 Region 19 titles.
The Roadrunners—returned five regulars and five starting pitchers —are 29-6 on the season and ranked third in the nation. GCC had their 17-game winning streak snapped by Ocean Community College in the first game of a doubleheader on April 17. After losing game one 1-0, the Roadrunners came back and racked up nine runs in a 9-3 victory in game two. Gloucester suffered their second loss in three games when they fell to Salem Community College 13-12 in a slugfest on April 9.
Leading Roadrunners on the mound are a pair of four-game winners freshman RH Bill Mendek—4-0, 1.61 ERA—and freshman LH Jeff Singer—4-0, 2.58 ERA. Other key pitchers include sophomore RH Andy Sullivan—3-0, 3.86 ERA —, sophomore RH Casey McMickle—3-1, 1.27 ERA—and RH freshman Mike Cogliano—2-0, 2.61 ERA.
GCC—has scored at least 10 runs in a third of their games—has seven players hitting over .300 including two hitting at least .400. Some of the other key hitters include sophomore OF/1B Eric Barbriere—.402 avg., 9 HRs, 37 RBIs —, sophomore CF Sean Feeney—.326 avg., 2 HRs —, sophomore 1B Jim Hanson—.349, 7 HRs, 29 RBIs —, freshman 3B/C Thomas Kain—.482 avg., 4 HRs, 30 RBIs —, sophomore C/1B Kevin Needham—.407 avg., 6 HRs, 31 RBIs —, sophomore C/OF Zach Passerelle—.367 avg., 5 HRs, 22 RBIs—and sophomore OF Eric Sellito —.339 avg., 1 HR, 13 RBI.
