PDGA This Weekend: A Look at Disc Golf’s Victoria Open in Texas and the Melbourne Open in Florida
Things are really picking up in the world of disc golf. While many players are in Las Vegas for the Gentleman's Club Challenge, there are quite a few big tournaments taking place across the nation over the weekend of February 25-26, 2012. Here is a look at two of them.
Victoria Open in Victoria, Texas
The Victoria Open takes place in Victoria, Texas at the Riverside Park Disc Golf Course. With 84 disc golf players registered in this PDGA sanctioned B-Tier event, it is full, but this would be a great event to observe and learn from some of the best. The course is set in beautiful park and borders the Guadalupe River. It's said to be one of the most challenging in the Lone Star State.
Check-in is at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, followed by a player's meeting at 8:15 a.m. and tee-off at 9:00 a.m. A two hour lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m, will be followed by a round two tee-off at 2:00 p.m. A free spaghetti dinner will be held on the course at 5:00 p.m.
Sunday will begin with tee-off at 9:00 a.m., followed by lunch from noon to 1:30 p.m, and a final round of nine at 2:00 pm. A few of the disc golfers who will compete include Brad Williams of Austin, Texas, the winner of the Corpus Christi Open, and three-time Women's World Champion Des Reading of Wimberley, Texas.
Melbourne Open in Melbourne, Florida
The Melbourne Open takes place in Melbourne, Florida this weekend at the Wickham Park Disc Golf Course. This is a huge PDGA sanctioned B-Tier event, with 137 disc golfers registered to compete. The course is set in a scenic park with lots of space that includes a fishing pond, dog park and lots more. It's a mostly open course that isn't too difficult but offers some good technical shots.
Some of the disc golf players who will be there to compete include John Lorentzen of Kalispell, Montana, crowned champion in the Tour del Sol Finals, and the winner of the Alaska State Championships. JohnE McCray of Brandon, Florida will compete with Lorentzen in the open division. McCray was the winner of last year's Melbourne Open, and had several other victories last year, including the Orlando Open and the Daytona Open.
Get outdoors and watch some of these outstanding players show off their great skills this weekend!
