Columbus, Ohio, Area Skate Shops that Rock
When you think of Columbus, Ohio, you may not immediately think of skate shops, but there are a few of them around and they rock. Here's a quick rundown on a few places you may want to check out the next time you're in the area:
The Embassy Boardshop is located on North High Street. It opens daily at noon and unusually stays open at least until 6 p.m. If you are looking for serious selection of stylish skate kicks, this is the place to go. You can typically scoop up a pair of Nike SB, Fallen or DC Shoes for around $50 to $60 bucks. Skate decks are reasonably priced as well. You may expect to pay in the neighborhood of $40 for one. Some of the brands typically on hand include Real, Blueprint and Alien Workshop.
Flow Skatepark Skate Shop
The Flow Skatepark Skate Shop is getting ready to re-open a new location on West Broad Street. At this point it looks like the shop and skatepark will re-open in February. Skaters should keep their eyes peeled to the company's Facebook page for updates. At its previous location the shop carried an ample array of brands like Baker, Toy Machine, Alien Workshop, Orchid and Black Label. The new shop and skatepark is expected to be open Tuesday through Sunday.
Play It Again Sports
Play It Again Sports is located on Sawmill Road and offers gently used and new sports equipment and apparel. When it comes to skate gear the inventory can be touch and go. Think of it like a large discount store or yard sale only with good stuff. I mention it because sometimes you can get lucky and snag a sweet deal. You're also allowed to trade in your unwanted skate equipment for cash, which makes it a cool alternative to folks on a budget. You could use what you get for your old skate gear on the purchase of that new one you've been eyeballing. It opens at 10 a.m. every day except Sunday. On Sundays it typically opens from noon until 5 p.m.
Old Skool Skate Shop
The Old Skool Skate Shop is a skater owned and operated shop that is located 20 minutes from Columbus in Westerville. As such, you can count on talking to a staff member that has both a passion for the sport and knowledge of what gear you really need. The prices are right in line with what you'd find at other shops. Some of the brands you'll generally find in stock include Mystery, Zero, 5 Boro, Almost and Alien Workshop. When it comes to skate shoes you'll find an assortment of VOX and Osiris. It opens at noon on the weekends and at 1 p.m. the remainder of the week.
My children are skaters and I have a history of following the sport.
