PDGA: Disc Golf’s Barnett Park Disc Golf Championships in Orlando, Florida
The Barnett Disc Golf Championships are coming up in just a few weeks in Orlando, Florida over the weekend of February 11-12, 2012 at, of course, the Barnett's Park Disc Golf Course. This is a PDGA sanctioned B-Tier event that includes guaranteed prizes of disc golf baskets for first place in advanced, advanced amateur, & intermediate amateur.
With the Orlando area extremely busy most of the year, it's important to book your lodgings as soon as possible. There are great camping options in the area, including Turkey Lake at Bill Frederick Park. They offer tent and RV sites as well as cabins. There are lots of activities available, so this would be a fun place to stay and bring your family. It includes a swimming pool, nature trails, a playground, children's farm and more. Call 407-299-5594 for rates.
There are also several hotels near the course, including The Sabal Hotel. For the best rates call directly at 407-656-5050. It's about eight miles west of Barnett's Park. The Palace Hotel is another option, at 407-299-8180, but is said not to be as "family friendly" as the first option.
The tournament will showcase the two championship courses within the park and include two rounds of 18 holes each on both Saturday and Sunday, with a final round of nine holes for Open Pro.
The North course is the more challenging of the two, with lots of variety and long holes with good obstacles. This course also has a little more elevation change and is reported to have a pretty scary water hole at the end. The Parkside course is a beautiful, scenic course that has a big mix of both long and short holes, and a good mix of wooded and open shots.
Some of the players who are currently registered include John Lorentzen and JohnE McCray, who will compete in the open division. Lorentzen is from Kalispell, Montana and was the winner of the Kenai Eagle Open and the Alaska State Champions, and had a third place finish recently at the Tocobaga Games. McCray is from Brandon, Florida and had wins at the Orlando Open, Daytona Open and Jacksonville Open among many others in 2011, and had a first place finish at the recent Savannah Open.
This sounds like it'll be a great weekend to come out and watch some of disc golf's compete in some of that beautiful Florida sun.
