Yahoo! Contributor NetworkDarrelle Revis is Best Cornerback in the NFL by a Wide Margin: Fan Reaction
After witnessing Darrelle Revis' wanton destruction of Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall, I think it's time to proclaim the New York Jets corner: tops in the business.
And maybe the best in a long time.
Marshall had promised to play "like a monster" on Monday Night Football against Revis, but ended the Jets Pro Bowlers' prey instead. Revis broke up four passes, intercepted two and ran one of them 100 yards for a touchdown.
This wasn't the first time an elite wide receiver has been found hopelessly stranded on "Revis Island," however.
In his short but illustrious career, Revis has shut down all of the elite receivers in the league, including Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Chad Ochocinco, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson and Wes Welker. He has also picked off some of the smartest and most accurate quarterbacks in the league.
According to Jets head coach Rex Ryan, Darrelle is both the best zone and man defender and, without exception, the best corner in the NFL. It should be noted that Rex made these statement long before they were popular.
Simply put, it is unsafe for any quarterback to throw the ball in Revis' direction, regardless receiver, route or coverage.
Also, I believe Revis should have won the Defensive Player of the Year award. Charles Woodson led the league in interceptions, but against the toughest competition, nobody interrupts as many passes and locks down elite receivers like Revis.
Like Jon Gruden said last night on the MNF telecast, Revis is the best corner since Deion Sanders and could eclipse "Prime Time" by the time he's hangs up his cleats.
