Sportscaster must pay ex-wife $916,000 a year

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP)—CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz must pay $916,000 yearly in alimony and child support to his ex-wife and give up their Connecticut home under terms of a newly issued divorce decree.

The ruling, made Monday in Bridgeport Superior Court, dissolves the 26-year marriage of Nantz and Ann-Lorraine “Lorrie” Carlsen Nantz. It comes after both testified about the breakdown of their marriage; Judge Howard Owens concluded neither was at fault.

Nantz, described by Owens as “our nation’s most prominent sportscaster,” filed for divorce last year from his wife after years of marriage counseling, according to the decree.

Although Nantz, 50, acknowledged he started dating a 29-year-old woman before the divorce was final, the judge concluded the marriage deteriorated years earlier and “this remote event in no way contributed to the breakdown of the marriage.”

Owens noted that the couple didn’t share the same interests in Nantz’s television career, which required frequent travel as the network’s primary commentator for college football, golf and basketball, as well as appearances at charity events.

“In fairness, for most of the years he prioritized his family obligation and put his wife and daughter Caroline first. As frequently happens in marriages of lengthy duration, the parties do not have the same interest and ardor for their spouses’ endeavors,” the judge wrote in his decision.

Under the ruling, Nantz must pay $72,000 in alimony monthly until he dies or his ex-wife remarries, and another $1,000 weekly in child support for the next two years.

Nantz’s attorney, Gaetano Ferro of New Canaan, said Tuesday that the famed sportscaster only wants what’s best for his daughter and will not fight the terms of the divorce decree.

“He always wanted a peaceful resolution of an unfortunate situation,” Ferro said. “He never wanted a trial, never wanted it to come out this way, never wanted a public spectacle. He wants to put it behind him.”

Lorrie Nantz will get their home and a separate condominium in Westport, while Jim Nantz will get their home in Houston and a luxury condominium in the Deer Valley ski resort in Park City, Utah. They were awarded joint custody of Caroline, 15.

He also must pay Caroline’s college expenses until she reaches 23 years old and has to split various joint accounts with Lorrie Nantz, including the current value of his pension through the Screen Actors Guild.

He also must keep his ex-wife listed as beneficiary of a $3 million life insurance policy while he’s still paying alimony and/or child support, and pay $70,000 so she can join any country club of her choice.

She had been seeking more than $1.5 million in yearly alimony and child support.

Court documents cited Jim Nantz’s $3.2 million salary from CBS and other assets, including millions in other income, shared investment accounts, real estate and other property.

Nantz, who started his broadcast career at a local CBS affiliate in Salt Lake City, testified that Lorrie Nantz grew uninterested in his career over time, did not want to attend events that were important to him and didn’t provide the emotional support he desired.

Lorrie Nantz said she went as often as possible, but that those events were not her life’s major interest and her main focus was raising their daughter.

“They’re two good people, and as sometimes happens over 26 years, they grew apart,” Ferro said.

Cynthia George, Lorrie Nantz’s Greenwich-based attorney, said she and her client had no comment except that they were pleased with the decision.

Ok, I can see Jimbo breaking off his ex some loot because the marriage ended. Although he was the main bread winner, he earned it while they were together, so she should get something ONE TIME ONLY. Split everything down the middle and that's it. As it is, Jimbo has to pay alimony UNTIL HE DIES. Nearly one third of his current income gos to a woman he no longer has ties to. That is soooooo wrong! MY question is: What happens if CBS lets Jim go and he cant find a job? Its happened before. Will he still have to pay the alimony.

Lastly, to all husbands and wives, CHANGE YOUR BENEFICIARIES to your children! In case your marriage gos south, you wont get stuck like 'ole Jimbo. This way, your ex won't benefit from your death. And if you have good relations with your kids and your ex exes out completely, they'll take care of you.

What IS IT with wives after years of marriage? She and so many others just get so ENVIOUS of their husbands I believe. She sounds so similar to my wife and those of other buddies. All they want to do is prevent their husbands from enjoying themselves. I'm in sales and if I happen to have a golf outing with a client, I can tell how pissed she gets that I might be enjoying a nice day. I honestly think she'd be happier if was headed into a coal mine for the day.

All Nantz's wife had to do was accompany him to a few events....and she couldn't be bothered?? I'm sure she was SOOOO envious she just couldn't face seeing him actually enjoying himself. But all these stay at home wives just want to take take take, while at the same time doing whatever to prevent their husband from what he wants to do.

    Any other guys experience this??

This is such a joke...How in the world does ANY woman deserve this much $$$. I mean $70K for a golf membership + $1K for child support. FOR WHAT??? This is why rich guys should never marry. I mean athletes get hosed by the baby mamas and dead beat women get paid for doing nothing. I'm pretty sure there is a maid, nanny, cook around the house. So really, what is she doing all day.? NOTHING!!! This is BS. The life insurance thing is STUPID!!! I don't know what Nantz or his lawyer was thinking about here. or not thinking. They both are idiots!!! I have an idea...Make a law that requires the lawyer to pay half of the settlement. Then see how these deals are calculated...hmmmm

So if $3.2 million is what he earns a year, is that before taxes? I mean after income taxes the man is left with closer to $2 million I'm guessing, so half of his money goes to his ex-wife. His daughter gets $1,000 a month and the wife $72,000? What on earth does she need that much money for?

And to No. 123 Sandy - you've never heard of Jim Nantz? Surely you've at least heard him talking, but didn't know that was him. He is the main guy for CBS Sports. Do you not watch much sports on CBS or just don't know that many commentators?

Damn my thought's... she's a@#$% for wanting so much.
and the judge deserves to have the @#$% beat outta him. for demanding her ass get so much..

and to the woman no matter if a man leave's you and you have to pay that will never compare to what guy's have to go through. as he is a great example.
nothing like getting overpaid, and not haveing to work again just for leaveing your ex.
I mean the guy didn't cheat on her she prob was a @#$% and he wanted to leave her no good ass.

what can you say the court system favor's more to woman. :D

Trust me, it's not just women that do it. I'm female and had a man do it to me......all my assets were acquired before the marriage and he was entitled to 50%????? Something is wrong with the way our laws are written.

    P.S. He didn't get 50% - just a bunch of attorney's fees!!!

    Never heard of him.

"Why should I even consider getting married? I get all the (p-expletive) I want, and give half of everything I own to any woman is stupid"
    ------------Gene Simmons

"I'm never getting married again. Every five years I can just find a woman I hate and buy her a house"
    --------Ray Stevens

Worse case ever is what Heather Mills did to Paul McCartney. He married for love, refused a pre-nup and that bee- itch took him for 300 million for 4 years of marriage. Pretty good job there Heather. You will get what coming to you. I hope your other leg falls off. And stay away from dancing competition shows, you only lasted as long as you did out of sympathy votes. You looked like the boogie-woogie amputee that you are. Sorry, do I sound bitter? Well I had to tone it down from what I really think of her to keep this civil and let it be posted w/o being flagged

There are exceptions to the rule. To all of you women out there who are hard working, independent, who share in the duties of cooking/cleaning/bill paying/child raising etc and during all of this keep yourself in shape, have a healthy sex drive, and have a positive attitude.... you are truely amazing. To all the other 98% of the women out there, just know that as you get older, your monetary value decreases. Sure sure when you are young and all the men are chasing you, I can see having to give up some of my earnings to have you (well I really dont believe this, but its just for arguments sake). I believe the payout should be on a sliding scale. After 26 years of marriage, this scale slides down to just about zero. Just walk away with nothing, and be happy you got to live for so long with such a high lifestyle. And this was all due to your talented spouse, who worked his ass off day in and day out, who clearly would rather be home playing with his kids.

"those events were not her life’s major interest and her main focus was raising their daughter." How stupid does that sound? Those events are the things that had made it possible for her to live the life she lives.

Marriage is a give and take, sounds to me like she is very selfish. She should pay him for putting up with her non-supporting a*@^.

Jesus...70 grand to join a country club. Alimony until she re-marries. Unless she hooks up with another multi-millionaire that won't happen. She'll be completely content sipping margaritas in her home and vacation house that her husband purchased, her 916 thousand dollar salary for spreading her legs for the first 3 years of their marriage, and 25 years of b!tching. Man, I could do that. Any takers? All of THAT for the low low price of 916 thousand dollars a year...(fine print spoken VERY quickly...) Plus 70 thousand for country clubbing, two huge homes worth millions, half your pension, half of your investments, and 1 and 1/2 of your testicles. See the lawyer for details.
