Chula Vista, Calif. beats Taiwan to win LLWS title

  • Print

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP)—They’re celebrating in the San Diego suburbs thanks to a little league team from Chula Vista.

“It seems San Diego comes so close all the time. The Padres come close and don’t win. The Chargers come close and don’t win,” manager Oscar Castro said after his team from the small city in southern California rallied to beat Taiwan on Sunday and claim the Little League World Series title. “It was nice to do it for the city.”

Bulla Graft’s sharp single scored the go-ahead run in the fourth inning and Kiko Garcia pitched three-plus scoreless innings of relief to lead the boys from Chula Vista back from a three-run deficit for a 6-3 victory.

With the partisan crowd standing, Garcia closed out the victory by striking out Yu Chieh Kao—prompting chants of “U-S-A! U-S-A!”

“We knew we could come back,” the 13-year-old Garcia said in between laughs with his teammates. “We always do.”

It was the fifth straight Little League championship for the United States. Garcia and the boys wanted to head to their favorite restaurant in southern California for their customary post-victory meal including fries and tacos.

After a wild celebration around Garcia, the Californians invited Taiwan to accompany them on the customary victory lap around Lamade Stadium on a sun-splashed afternoon.

Castro sought to shield his team from the pressure of the tournament as they advanced, forbidding them to surf the Internet for the last three weeks to prevent them from seeing the media exposure back home.

Victory on Sunday looked in doubt early after Wen Hua Sung and Chin Ou hit back-to-back homers in the third to give Taiwan a 3-0 lead.

California scored a run in the third and surged ahead in the fourth. Seth Godfrey drove in a run on a sacrifice fly before Nick Conlin scored on a wild pitch.

Even Vice President Joe Biden, who attended the game, was impressed, standing and clapping as his three granddaughters looked on.

Later, Taiwan walked slugger Luke Ramirez with two outs to bring up Graft. The 12-year-old second baseman hit a 1-1 pitch to right to score Andy Rios from third.

Taiwan loaded the bases in the fifth off two hit batters and a walk, but Garcia escaped the jam after getting Ou to ground into an inning-ending double play. Rios, playing shortstop, snagged the bouncer, tagged the runner going to third before throwing to first to get Ou.

“It was just instinct to tag the runner, he was right in front of me,” the 13-year-old Rios said. “They had all the momentum with the bases loaded, but I gave us the momentum with the double play.”

California added two runs in the fifth, more than enough cushion for Garcia.

The boys threw their gloves high in the air after Kao struck out, then gathered near the mound and fell into a pile on the ground.

“It’s just an amazing feeling,” the 12-year-old Godfrey said. “We went for it, and we did.”

Ou, who started for Taiwan, baffled California early with breaking balls before the team rallied in the fourth inning.

California didn’t homer Sunday, following through on Castro’s philosophy to hit line drives, not the long ball. Castro said it took his boys one time through the order to figure out Ou.

Garcia, who led the team by hitting .667 with three homers and eight RBIs for the tournament, said the team never lost confidence.

“We knew we could hit any kind of pitching,” he said.

Taiwan’s coaches declined to speak with reporters afterward, instead choosing to lead their players across the field back to their dorms, with equipment bags in hand.

They walked right past giddy California boys on their hands and knees, scooping up plastic bags of infield dirt as a memento of their big win.

CV had a great baseball team and they played extremely well. The Chinese always hover over the plate sticking knees and elbows in so it was good to see 3 of them get hit with the ball. After they got stung those bats were not so easy to swing. CV was loaded with talent and also with class.

Can't we all just get along? If this was football, no one would be wondering about how tall or heavy a player is. If NY, Washington, Georgia, Iowa, Massachusetts, Texas or Kentucky were the teams to advance and play in the final - would there be comments about the ethnic background of their players? Come on people, accept that the US is a melting pot and get over yourselves.

That Chula Vista Parkview team played an exciting brand of baseball. Their skills were extraordinary. And it's about time that the city of Chula Vista had it's moment of glory. I'm a San Diego city native and have lived in Chula Vista for the past 9.5 years. The gap in education & in sports is huge between the priviledge yet polished East CV and the more unfortunate West (and no, it is not a wasteland of gangs or poverty, just a wasteland of unrealized potential). The High Schools in East CV like Bonita Vista & Eastlake seem to dominate everything (except for Castle Park Football & maybe Hilltop).

When will the West CV kids raise their standards, get out of "O-Room", and give the East Chula Vista leagues a run for their money?

One thing that none of you are aware of is the team from Kuei-Shan practices on a field of grass. They don't even have a proper baseball diamond with a backstop to practice on. I know because I live here and have actually been to their school and seen them practice. Not to mention that they have to share bats and equipment as the majority of them are poor aboriginal kids who just love baseball.

Hey Eder, its a good thing they do have a pool for the USA because if not most years would produce an all USA finals. Outside of 3 teams in the international pool the others sucked big time and those 5 could not beat the USA teams that did not qualify. Now that is reason number one, number two is it is our series we host so we can run it like we choose. USA USA USA USA

This event is great what i dont like is why us allways have to be in the finals why is one international pool and one national why usa allways must have one team in the final. is like when you were kid, if you were the owner of the ball you must play the first batter and be home team and if had to leave the game was over.
i think that kids philosphy remains in this little league "world" series

Way to go Chula Vista were so proud of you guys You deserve a huge congratulations on your winning the game YEAH!!! LLWS rocks. My son played little league for 11 years and he played with a young man named Lou Z. we all called him a man child at 12 years he was 6.2 and 225 lbs His mother had to keep his birth certificate with her at all time to prove how old he was he was 2 months older then my son who was only 4 ft 9" and only 68 lbs so here is a fine example of the size difference in boys of that age. So to all you ignorant jerks I guess you have never raised boys . I have watched the LLWS for years and this was one of the most exciting games I have ever watched!!!

Excellent game from both sides and congrats to "all" the players. Got to figure, even second isn't bad when your in the series!!! Loved the couple games I was able to watch. As for the rude and unwarranted comments of several, ignore them. People with that kind of outlook in life aren't the leaders or citizens you young players want to associate with and certainly not become. Keep up the good work coaches.....

All the boys did themselves proud, Texas, Japan and Mexico to name a few.

Good Job Chula Vista. We watched you guys in San Bernardino and were so impressed with the quality of play. As for the idiots who mention race or steroids, get a life. Really just a bunch of Mexicans? Like a huge portion of So. Cal, they happen to be of Hispanic decent. The team had a mix of players with different pedigrees. So what! You obviously didnt listen to how well spoken they kids were. As for steroids, that doesnt even warrant a comment.

Way to represent Chula Vista L.L.

Congrats Chula Vista!!! Anyone that has ever played for a little league all star team knows how much hard work and dedication you guys put forward to make it to the big game. We commend you guys for all your hard work and thank you for bringing home another title for the U.S.. If any of the actual team members from Chula Vista or any other team read this please dont take to heart the negative things that have been said in some of these comments, just know some of us know how hard you worked to make it as far as you did. And for the people who are posting these negative comments, you should be ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES!!!!!!!

First, I love the Little League World Series but a few things perplex me. The kids wear a "I will not cheat patch" yet they frame pitches and sometimes get balls called as strikes which is cheating the batter. One catcher on a foul ball that clearly touched the ground a foot in front of him asked for an appeal saying he caught it. ESPN even had a former player explaining how to drag the catchers mitt back over the plate to get a strike call from a ball. A couple of teams would lean t heir bodies over the plate to either get hit or have the pitch go outside. I think we remember the pitcher showing how the batter pushed his arm into the pitch to get hit. Now if this is not cheating your fellow competitors then I don't know what would be. So either they clean this up or else take those patches off some of the teams.

Congratulations to all the participants, but especially to Chula Vista!
This is why we need baseball (and softball) back in the Olympics - to give all these awesome players a dream to represent their countries when they get older. It's a shame these two sports were again rejected by the International Olympic Committee.
