Roy S. Johnson Blog

If you were there that evening three years ago, at the feet of the hills outside Pasadena, Calif., you just knew you were watching a beginning – not an end.

If you were there at the Rose Bowl, as the drama folded, refolded and unfolded again, you were convinced you were seeing the debut of the next great quarterback rivalry.

If you were there, as the final heart-stopping seconds ensued, you would have bet your pre-real-estate-collapse home that Southern California's Matt Leinart and Texas' Vince Young would be the faces of quarterback greatness for at least the next decade.

I was there, and you could not have done anything to persuade me that night that, three years later, Leinart and Young would be near-bust NFL benchwarmers today.

The two young men who starred in perhaps the greatest Rose Bowl ever have thrown just eight passes this season (all eight of them by Leinart). Three years and three weeks into their pro careers, they're clipboard-hugging also-rans.

Both men back up guys almost old enough to be their dads. In Arizona, Leinart sits behind 38-year-old Kurt Warner, while Young shags for Tennessee's Kerry Collins, 36.

But maybe not for long.

The Cardinals and Titans – teams which reached the playoffs in '08, with the Cardinals going to the Super Bowl – are an abysmal 1-5, collectively. And the whispers have begun.

Of course, the reasons for their woeful starts extend beyond the men behind center. Neither man, however, has shined this season (Warner's QB rating is 83.5; Collins languishes at 69.9, fifth from worst ahead of now-benched Brady Quinn of Cleveland, Detroit rookie Matt Stafford, Carolina's Jake Delhomme and JaMarcus Russell of the Raiders).

Not surprisingly, Warner's at least chewing up air yardage, passing for 287.7 yards per game (fourth in the NFL). Collins, though, has been dreadful, completing only 55 percent of his passes – and with as many interceptions (4) as touchdowns (4), he's truly thankful for Delhomme (2 TDs, 7 INTs)

It's too early to punch the proverbial panic button, but Arizona's Ken Whisenhunt and Tennessee's Jeff Fisher need to keep the sucker close by.

The Cardinals can draw on recent experience. They were 2-2 last season before crawling into the playoffs and engineering a stunning run that got them to the Super Bowl. And they still have two of the most dangerous weapons in the game in wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin.

The Titans, conversely, are in a funk. They've lost five straight games (including the playoffs) since starting last season 13-2 and are dangerously close to a hole from which the postseason is all but an impossibility.

If their respective fortunes don't change soon – very soon – the franchises will have to make the call to turn it over to Leinart and Young. Not so much because their seasons would be "over," but because both men might be the injection of energy the teams need to mount a revival.

That is much more likely with Young, a former NFL Rookie of the Year. Leinart, who failed to hold off Warner in the summer of 2008, spent his offseason improving his conditioning and vowed to spend more time practicing than partying – finally.

But maybe the most important reason for playing the youngins' is to see, once and forever, if they can, well, play. If Leinart and Young are not capable of being the future of their respective franchises – as they were drafted to be – then the teams need to know now.

And if that's the case, then they're a lot worse off than their abysmal records. A lot.

Warner aint going nowhere until he gets injured. The way the Cards O-line is playing that could happen any given week. Leinart knows this and he will be waiting and ready just like Cassel was. Warner is a wheelchair with rocket launcher attached on the side.
Collins has to go no matter who his backup is. Even Jeff Garcia would be better. Titans "D" is not dominating like last year and it exposes the offense more. Why must the Titans wait until they 0-4 to put Vince Yound back in there? Remember that Young did have some success until he lost focus with his emotional/mental troubles.

Vince is a joke who cannot even spell his own name and lost his job to a MVP and Superbowl winner. Vince lost his job to Kerri Collins who's not bad but nowhere near great. Do the math people.
Vince can scramble - that's great but like in school - he can't read - and the same thing in defense - doesn't know how to read them either!!!
And before anyone starts - it has nothing to do with color - Vince is just an idiot who happens to be black just like Jeff George was a talented QB who was also and idiot and he was white!

Nah...both young guys suck! The old dudes may not get the job done at this point, but remember their experience and what they have accomplished in the past. The young guys could not even throw the f-ing ball! Even Grossman is better than both!

those people doing the "first" thing on every blog are loosers and so are Young and Leinart. Boy, did we dodge a bullet by drafting M Williams down here in Houston and not Young. (sigh).

I don't think Leinart can play, period. He has the best starting WR combo in the league, only Welker and Moss in NE can argue that, a solid #3 in Breaston and all 3 have been in the same system for several years now so there is no reason he cant' hook up on a consistent basis with these targets, and yet he doesn't. Young on the other hand wasn't a great at reading coverages and his accuracy isn't great, but I don't think we can officially call him a bust until he gets soem targets other than his TE's to throw to. Gage, Washington, and Britt look decent but 2 of those 3 are new to the team and Young hasn't worked with them in the first unit.

Vince Young will NEVER doanything in the NFL. I knew this when i found out his wounderlik score was 7. He is simply too stupid to play this difficult game...plus he cant throw 20 yards. Matt leinart will be a solid starter, can be a star if he puts his mind to it.

Ugh. Another blog about Vince Young, written by someone who hasn't watched a single Titan's game this season. Kerry Collins is NOT the problem with the Titan's. Kerry is an average, middle of the pack quarterback. The reason his stats are so low is because he has crappy receivers, giving up on routes and dropping balls. Vince Young has played terribly since his rookie season, once teams figured out that all they had to do was keep Young in the pocket and make him read the defense. How does replacing an average quaterback with a crappy quarterback create an "injection of energy"?

Vince was great in college where he could beat teams with his running ability,..it does NOT translate to the pro game, plus he was a very mediocre passer in college,...now that weakness is magnified huge by the pro game. It will NEVER happen for Vince,..ask Byron Leftwich what happens to guys like Vince,..they get 5 years, and "poof" they are gone. For every Michael Vick, 15 others are gone-o. Matt Leinert may make it, but he has a "party boy" target attached to his back that he cant shake unless he miracuously gets a shot at redemption, but this years Cardinals are not going anywhere, and neither is Matt except to the broadcast booth for a reality show in 3 years.

The thing I hated most about Vince Young was his throwing motion- too sidearm out of college. Then he won ROY, and I think "well, maybe I'm wrong"...
    Nope.
Look, I don't know about how much the WONDERLIC score shows about a man's intellect, I don't know if Vince Young can read. I DO know he can't read defenses and free safeties have a field day with him because he's extremely easy to figure out- he has two targets in mind for any one play, and then he falls into patterns where he only looks for one of those targets after half a game.
To me, Leinart's just a guy who never wanted to relinquish his King Of College Life throne. Ask him honestly, I'll bet you he tells you that he had a lot more fun in college than what he'll probably ever have in the pros.
In short, he's not wanting to grow up.

I still don't understand why the Titans won't get Vince in the game in some capacity..to pay him the kind of money they do, they need to use him for something..have him line up in the backfield with CJ..have some packages where they use him. even if it's as a decoy.. with CJ and VY back there thats 2 playmakers the defense would have to account for..are you listening Jeff??

#14 You are obviously a moron look at Houston's numbers where did the offense rank last year ?? You do know we are talking about Vince not Steve Young right ?????? Vince Young would be lucky to make it in the UFL he couldn't hold Schaub's jock retard you were one of the idiots blasting the Texans when they took Williams weren't you ?? I'm pretty sure they made the right pick or maybe they should've taken Bush right ? ugh I hate people that don't know the game stop letting people tell you who's good and watch the games.

I think we are too quick to judge QB's these days. Look at Drew Brees's first three years, everyone thought he was a bust, which is why the Chargers drafted Rivers. But since his fourth season Brees has been a monster. I didn't look at the numbers for Young, but Leinart has only thrown around 500 NFL passes. Time will certainly tell, but I think he's a little early to judge both of these guys.

As bad as they are . . . I can think of at least four teams that Leinart and Young would be starting. Both need to be moved and given a chance.

Leinart didn't do well starting off, but name 5 QB's who's come into the league there rookie year and been great. Matt Ryan was a game manager, and so was Flacco. Peyton is the only QB who came in Rookie year and threw 20+ td's. What Green Bay did with Aaron Rodgers was brilliant and look at what he's done! Matt Leinart is in the same situation. Sitting behind a good Veteran like Warner, learning from him and when he does get his chance he's going to be good. Young on the other hand is a Michael Vick type QB who isn't nowhere near as good as Michael Vick. Vince Young will never do anything in the NFL worth anything. He's too stupid for one thing and he's found out that the NFL is a whole lot different than NCAA
