Roy S. Johnson Blog

Newsday reported that Knicks president Donnie Walsh isn't interested in signing Allen Iverson, the most intriguing free agent still on the market. The report didn't say why, but I can imagine the reasoning is something along the lines of: He isn't just our kind of guy.

Please.

Full disclosure: I hold Knicks season tickets. Pretty good ones, too. And I've enjoyed taking my kids to the game for more than a decade. Though some games I might have enjoyed a trip to the dentist better.

So I feel I have every right to say: Please sign Iverson! Give him a contract and slip a Knicks jersey on one of the most exciting scorers in the history of the game. (He tweeted this week that the Knicks were one of three teams that might sign him.)

I know all the reasons not to do it. Money. Age. Attitude. Blah. Blah.

Perhaps the biggest is that he was a one-man wrecking ball last season in Detroit, all but getting a head coach fired and sucking the life out of a team that once thought it was good enough to reach the NBA Finals. That's the reason few have called, despite A.I.'s 27.1 career scoring average, a respectable 17.4 last season - before he was exiled by Pistons president Joe Dumars.

But I don't care. These Knicks have no championship delusions. Make him a Knick.

A.I. cannot cause the implosion of a team that will likely miss the playoffs once again. Walsh & Co. haven't done anything this summer to greatly improve a team that finished 32-50, seven games out of the playoffs and 34 games behind top-seeded Cleveland. This remains the Off-Broadway Bunch.

And yet, there I'll be in my ridiculously expensive seats, just like thousands of other longtime sufferers. Why not give is a show? Give us an icon who scores in his sleep.

Make A.I. a Knick.

Sure, Mike D'Antoni's system was entertaining. But it's also porous. On too many nights, I left with the Knicks leading by 16 going into the fourth because I didn't want to see the inevitable comeback. Didn't need that aggravation.

Guys like Wilson Chandler, Al Harrington and David Lee thrived in the system. And there were many nights when Nate Robinson could have run for mayor and won.

But well before the end of the season, the guys were too gassed to put up much of a fight against teams priming for the postseason.

Now, close your eyes and imagine A.I. in that system. He might score fiddy once a week. Even at 34 years old.

Imagine A.I. and Nate on the floor at the same time - a midget backcourt that couldn't cover stick figures but would be the best show in town.

And I don't even want to hear the he-doesn't-play-defense argument, not with this system. Make him a Knick.

And as for him not being our kind of guy, A.I. has not been on the sports/police pages recently like so many of his peers. Michael Vick and Plaxico Burress and Donte' Stallworth, to name just a few, have certainly upped the ante in this area. And Iverson never was the gangsta his rep made him out to be.

I presume the team has a plan for building a contender, one beyond "Waiting for LeBron." Bringing in A.I. for one season wouldn't disrupt that - not if the deal is structured right, which I'm confident Walsh could do.

So c'mon, Donnie, drop the high-and-mighty movement, grab some cash and sign A.I.

At least it'll make my expensive nights a lot more interesting. And practices will no doubt be a hoot.

A.I. needs to come to the Rockets! We're gonna need the scoring and without Yao or Tracy for the foreseeable future, who else is gonna be the got to guy? Makes perfect sense, he's the Answer...ebMadman

ai maybe a step slower but he can still get 20 in his sleep... after dumping all those salaries, the knicks made it clear that they're not interested in winning this year... if ai could turn things around this year to prove critics wrong, it'll be the steal off the free agent market this year...

with run and gun offensive minded knicks, they can put anybody on the floor and they will be able to score,, ai will just get on the way cuz he will take other peoples layups and dunks away and instead try to cross people over and pull for lower% jumpers

Yep...i guess the Knicks need AI. NY this coming season will all about entertainment. Mike D's system is an entertaining one. One that may win you games but will definitely not take you far down the play-offs.

Post 10 your right they could use him but not for his price, he is still a very good player, but he never learned the team concept yet and most likely never will. You have to see a talent go to waste, remember when he gave MJ the cross over

Sign a.i, he will average 35ppg easy in that system, what do the knicks have to lose by signing a.i, at least with a.i u have a shot at the playoffs finally, a.i is looking for a 1yr contract, lebron is not coming to new york whether u win or not.
as for detroit, joe dumars is an idiot, when he traded for a.i, he claimed he signed to to disect team's defense for one on one action, which is what a.i does but the rest of the pistons all quit except mcdyess and will bynum, they were crying because billups wasnt around no more. then curry decided not to let a.i be a.i, curry didnt know the meaning of rotations nor what he could do with a.i, a.i tried his best to fit in but the rest of the team never accepted, he started stuckey all season when its clear that stuckey is a sg who cant shoot and has 1 move. dumars messed up the team by firing flip saunders and has usual blame a.i "the nba rebel w/o a cause" why because he doesnt look like kobe or tim duncan, plss
whoever gets a.i for one season, his gonna enjoy him, a.i got a chip on his shoulder and he's motivated and he's gonna prove everyone wrong, god bless the players that will try to defend him. expect a.i to have a huuuugggggeeeeee year, remember he averaged 26ppg with denver. nuff said

Iverson will surely find a spot in NBA before the season starts. I have no doubt about it, he is not a young player anymore but he can still score and help any NBA team.

With the skills & abilities he has, Allen Iverson definetly should not have to think about retiring. But .. the cowardly (most often media) wolves that were always in attack mode are not going to ever give him any mercy. A.I.'s numbers use to be able to give his detractors the middle finger. but those stats never shut up jealous ones who envy. So probably instead of letting himself be raw meat for others to chew on.. Maybe its time for another great one to be gone.. Allen Iverson delivered "Answers". he has Nada, Nothing to prove... joining the Knicks would just give another sorry-a$$ over-spending system someone to accuse for why they loose.. Allen Iverson does not need to give himself to the same monster that chewed up & spit out Latrell Sprewell, Isiah Thomas.. & Even one of their greatest.. Patrick Ewing.
