Blame Bernie Madoff. Had it not been for him, maybe the Mets would have been less budget conscious and more like their recession-be-damned neighbors, the Yankees. Maybe they would have gone all-in and, in addition to building a gold-plated bullpen, added some pop to a lineup in dire need of something.

Maybe they would have signed Manny Ramirez.

The company that owns the Mets, Sterling Securities, was among Madoff's many victims. CNBC reported that Mets owner Fred Wilpon and his partner, Saul Katz, could have lost as much as $300 million.

The Mets never publicly said so, but those losses could have been the primary reason the team decided to spend whatever it took to fix the team's most glaring weakness - the bullpen - and nary a dime on Ramirez in an effort to address another flaw: the inability to get clutch hits.

There seemed to be a lot of sentiment in the dugout for signing the then free agent. manager Jerry Manuel called Ramirez a "historic" hitter and said he'd be "excited" to manage him every day.

Of course, that was mitigated by the undercurrent that follows Ramirez everywhere, the buzz that he's not a great teammate, that he's selfish, that Manny-being-Manny is not good for the locker room. Here's what Manuel said to that: "I don't have a problem with people that produce in the form and fashion that Manny Ramirez produces. We don't spend, shouldn't spend that much time in the locker room, anyway."

But it didn't happen, and right now (yes, it's amazingly early in the season), it looks as if it was a mistake.

Ramirez instead signed with the Dodgers and he's been all of Manny-being-Manny. He's hitting .340 with 10 RBIs and 13 runs scored. But more than numbers, he's been a major catalyst to L.A.'s 10-4 start, highlighted by a eight-game win streak.

The Mets, meanwhile, are 6-7. And their biggest flaw thus far has been their inability to get the key hit. They're fourth in the majors in on-base percentage, yet 21st in runs scored.

And they're batting .235 with runners in scoring position.

The Mets lineup is more than respectable, with Jose Reyes, Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran. On paper, it's almost down-right dangerous. But it has not produced when it matters most.

Imagine it with Ramirez in place of Murphy. The youngster is off to a soild start - .375 BA and 5 RBIs. But he's no Manny Ramirez. His bat strikes fear in no one.

Manny's does. He's a game-changer. His presence makes the hair stand up on the back of a pitcher's neck and brings outfielders to full attention.

With Bonds gone, Ramirez may now be the most feared hitter in baseball.

And the Mets could have had him. Should have. And probably would have.

Were it not for Bernie.

They should have, they didn't, move on. You have a top 5 offense in the NL with Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Delgado- along with Castillo hitting, Murphy hitting (not playing D though) and Church hitting.

Big deal, the Mets didn't get Manny, neither did the Mariners, or the Nationals, or anybody else but the Dodgers. What a fluff piece story.

he's 26, and a 7 year veteran. enough with the excuses for Reyes.
Do you have a problem with Carlos "I'll Dog it 1/2 a year until WIllie gets fired" Delgado being on the team?

im happy with the $400K because we still got the fearful right handed bat without shellin out $40mil. Im not implying that Sheff is any kind of Manny. Your example is a good one #7, we shouldnt need him! PLENTY of bats.

I don't buy it. I'm a Dodgers fan, and a Manny fan, but I don't think there was ever another team remotely interested in him at $20 mil/year. Madoff or not.

yankees biggest mistake so far. even with a-rod, the back end of that lineup isn't impressive.
having damon, jeter, text, manny, arod, posada, swish/nady, matsui DH, and the CF merrigoround would look a lot better. of course, never hiring joe giradi woulda done them miracles too.
Mets obviously could of used manny's clutch hitting right now. course, when manny starts trying to play his way out of LA, we'll be hearing about how this was the best move the mets didn't make.
considering how much the nationals were willing to give up for text, it does raise serious questions about why they didn't make more of a run after manny.

Seriously, if you're going to point and laugh at all the teams that didn't sign Manny because he's playing hard now, then keep this blog article posted through October, so we can point and laugh at you when his lazy ass plants itself on the bench for weeks with phantom knee injuries just before the playoffs. The guy is a total douchebag.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that the Mets will be fine without Manny and will end up with a better record than the Dodgers. The real question is why didn' they go after Orlando Hudson. And why didn't the Cardinals go after Orlando Hudson, or the Giants instead of Edgar Renteria. And why didn't the Dodgers go after Bobby Abreu and a top starter, they could have afforded CC Sabathia with that Manny momney if they were willing to go long term and he would have prefered California, let's be honest. I think when it's all said and done everyone is going to be wishing they had someone else and the Marlins will have another World Series.

Pujols can be gotten out by good pitching? What planet do you live on, dude? See Brad Lidge, 2005 NLCS, top of the ninth. No one gets Pujols out on a consistent basis, no one. Manny is great, but Pujols is in another dimiension right now.

Post #10: Boston fan here who's followed Manny for years. You hit the nail on the head - NO ONE. I would suggest sports analysts poll all pitchers in MLB. Ask THEM who they fear the most. There is no doubt in my mind as to what the answer would be. And you know why? Manny is clutch, period. And that is what teams need to win games. Interesting that this is brought up. I was watching the Dodger/Astros game last night. Announcers were talking about Manny and Pujols. They both agreed, Manny. They had also consulted so called "experts" when it comes to this sort of thing. And they too agreed, Manny. It's really not much of a contest. Pujols is great. Love him or hate him, Manny is phenomenal.

Proof is in the puddin' man. Pitchers pitch to Manny. They pitch around Pujols. They know that they are much more likely to get beat by Albert than Manny. With near to no help behind him, Pujols has put up stratospheric numbers since his rookie year. I challenge you to quote an expert who said that they would rather have Manny than Pujols with the game on the line. Ask Kruk or Gammons if you like the national media rather that the local media networks who they prefer. The one time in recent playoff memory when a pitcher challenged in the postseason resulted in a gigantic, iconic tater that will never be forgotten by the Cards' faithful. Let them pitch to Pujols and see what happens next. Manny strikes out too much to hold Albert's jockstrap.

This has to be one of the dumbest articles ever printed on Yahoo Sports and that's saying a lot. The Mets have the 2nd highest payroll in baseball right now, stop blaming it on Wilpon. Judging a team overall, let alone a team's BA with RISP THIRTEEN games through the season is beyond stupid, the Phillies started last year, you guessed it, 6-7 and still went on to win the world series.
Man-Ram would have been great for the Mets, but they were thinking long term with Daniel Murphy and I give kudos to the Mets for that. It takes a lot of guts by management in a city like NY to put their faith in a young guy rather than the old aging veteran, the Mets will live with Murphy's rookie mistakes in LF if he can post at least .850 OPS something he has shown is capable of doing even with his defensive blunders early on this year.
