The Boston Celtics had no choice, really.

When I first heard in the wind awhile back that the reigning NBA champions were looking to sign the NBA’s reigning castaway, Stephan Marbury, I laughed out loud. I mean scared-my-kids out loud. Needed a tissue and a glass of water (or something) to catch my breath.

The notion was absurd, I thought. Marbury was the game’s ultimate contradiction – a great talent void of any head for the “game” whatsoever. He could score, certainly. He can pass, no doubt. And there are nights when he made you forget about, well, all the other nights.

So could J.R. Rider. So could myriad other talented players through the years.

But there was one label Marbury could not shed: loser.

It’s a harsh shingle, and one I do not hang on him lightly, nor without trepidation. Despite his tenuous relationship with many of us who cover the games, and his checkered public persona, Marbury is a polite, affable young man.

He deserved every dollar owed to him by the Knicks and, frankly, I admire how he handled what could have been an even uglier mess as he was benched, then publicly flogged, then exiled by his hometown team.

Yet throughout his 12 pro seasons, throughout stops in Minnesota, New Jersey, Phoenix and New York, in the midst of all the nights when Marbury showed us all that he could be (and has always been expected to be since his days as a young phenom from Brooklyn), his teams rarely made the playoffs.

And even worse, his teammates seemed to grow weary of him, at best.

     At worst, they loathed him.

And yet in spite of that dossier, Stephon Marbury is now a Celtic. He is a member of one of the four most venerable franchises in all of sports.

Moreover he’s a member of a team that will make the playoffs and, indeed, may win a championship.

Seems like all he can do, as his presence has done in the past, is bring them down. I don’t use the words “poison” or “cancer” very often to describe an athlete, and I’m not using them to describe Marbury, either. But every team he’s player for has gotten better upon his departure. And upon his arrival every team has gotten … no need to finish the thought.

But the Celtics had no choice. Not if they are hoping to squeeze another championship out of their holy trinity – Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen.

The three stars and all-but-certain Hall of Famers are 32, 31 and 33, respectively. Their title run last season was a true testament to what can happen when talent, teamwork and sacrifice decide to become loyal friends.

This season, Garnett, Pierce and Allen have been no less great, proven by their  46-13 record before Marbury's debut on Friday against Indiana.

Yet the Celtics’ mantra this season has been “lingering doubt.” An uneasiness fueled by a bench weakened by the departures of James Posey and P.J. Brown.

In short, this Celtics team was simply not good enough – top to bottom – to repeat, and they knew it. From the locker room to the owners box, they knew it.

The Celtics survived three seven-game series last spring to reach the NBA Finals last season. That wasn’t going to happen this season, not with that bench. And not with the improvement of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic, teams that are talented, young and ravenous.

In short, like our nation ravaged by an economic tsunami, the Celtics were desperate. Desperate enough to reach for a stimulus packaged highlighted by Marbury.

All that said, I think it will work. I’m not saying these Celtics will repeat because of Marbury (along with the Celtics’ other recent signee, Mikki Moore). Not that crazy.

But I don’t think they’ll be dethroned because of him, either.

It will work because Marbury is reunited with the one former teammate who’ll have him: Garnett. "I just told him," said Celtics coach Doc Rivers said, "to be free."

It’ll work because the holy trinity has already laid down Celtic Law to Marbury. Stephon Marbury is a Celtic, not Stephon Star-bury. Fall in line. Be a good teammate. No, a great teammate. It’s not about you, Stephon, it’s about the ring. Now, welcome aboard.

Desperate times. A desperate measure. But one that had to be made.

these comments so far are dumb!!! he made a great debut tonight considering he hasnt play real basketball in so long. with the teams acceptance and the fans cheering the way they did, Marbury will be awesome.
@ AKI... the Celtics are broken and they know it, thats why they signed Marbury, u must not of read the article.. Cavs and Magic are right on their heals. They need Marbury, takes a lot of pressure off of Ray and Paul. unlike Rondo, Marbury can shoot the ball and more, which means they cant double team anyone if marbury, ray and paul are all in the game w KG.
I've always been a Marbury fan but i've also always been a Kobe fan.. When the finals rolls along, i will be torn between the 2 teams. but GO LAKERS!!! Kobe's legacy is on the line, and we will cement him as one of the greatest ever.

As a diehard Celtics fan I really hope the Marbury situation works out. Let's see what everyone has to say if it does. We have all made mistakes in our lives and hopefully he can redeem himself, he deserves the opportunity.

Let's give Starbury a break...the guy had a great debut tonight. He was given a standing ovation the moment he was sent in & even if he scored just 8 pts, w/c is way below his career average, the word SACRIFICE might have hit his head. The Celtics are already a great team without him, so even if Marbury screws up & gets kicked out, it wouldn't matter for them as they are still a force to contend with. In short, it would be a win-win situation for the Celtics no matter what he does. I would give him at least 10 games to prove his worth.

Marbury did well, give the guy a chance. He's still got the handles to burn most PGs in the league.
    @ OhSoEvo
If Kobe doesn't win it all this year, I think his legacy will be that of a choker. Of course, all the Kobe nuthuggers will say "he's young, still got lots of gas in his tank, LAKERZZZZ 2010!!!!!"
    LOL :P
    Go Spurs!

One more advantage that i see for the team is that by playing Steph off the bench, it means that he would be going up against 2nd stringer guards! I guess you guys know what i mean when an all-star point guard of Marbury's caliber matches up against replacement guards.....HE WILL EAT 'EM UP & CAUSE PANIC FOR THE OPPOSING TEAM!!

yeah... this celtics always need so many stars to win basketball championship.... last season it was big three now big three plus one with also a great credentials... stephon marbury is good basketball player... we all know that stephon is great basketball player especially with his age right now..... i think he is mature now he wants to help a the team where he is in too.... New york knicks did not give him a chance.... mike d antoni system is well fit for marbury... so i think the celtics steal this one.... but do you need three or four all star to win a championship.... do you remember what happens to the lakers when they form a 4 hall of famers they are stunned in the finals by who? pistons who has only at that time no all stars....

You can't even really say Marbury has made mistakes in his career. The drama began with Isaha and ended with Isaha. He was never known as a winner before his stint with the Knickerbockers but he wasn't hated and disrespected like he is now. He signed a contract when he was arguably one of the best point guards in the league and he deserves to be paid like every other player whether he is playing or not. He clearly wanted to play and was even willing to come off the bench at the beginning of the year and then was Punk'd by D'antoni. Last year, clearly no one was happy playing for Isaha, he left the team when his father died like every player in the league would do, and then was hurt with an ankle injury. The only mistake he made was the rape accusation.. of course, when he was with Isaha. He no longer is a superstar but Marbury can still play. He scored 8 points in less then 20 for a defensive team. Hes a great fit for this team as he no longer needs to feel the pressure of being the go to player. He has bigger talent around him to keep him under control. I hate the Celtics but I know theres one player on that team I will root for.

Marbury is a great pick up if he stays sane, shuts his mouth, listens and is willing to sacrifice. That is what winners do. It's how the Celtics have won more championships then anyone else. I think he will be a great asset to the b-squad. He will bring offense and stability to that group for a short period of time during the game and he could even start if something happens to rondo. There are some "ifs" attached to this deal, but overall, I think it's a great pickup. The Celtics have always been good at getting that veteran player during the latter part of the year that really helps them. This could be another one.

Marbury is a jerk. He has to be a nutjob. Why else would a team bench its highest paid player. Forget him, and his attitude, I hope Boston falls on their face with this one.

The key is RONDO. If he feels like Marbury is competition or a threat -- not from a performance standpoint, but more from team politics -- then Ainge has just hurt the team. But if Garnett and Rivers can pull all of them together, get all of them to recognize a common goal, then Rondo can go on making the Celtics HIS team, and the rest of them can join him at the ring ceremony.
No, I'm not a Rondo fan. I've just watched the Celtics for half a century, and know how they work.
Ps. Rajon, if you read this -- take only TWO of those freakin' crazy lay-ups per game ! NOW GO GET L.A. !

The difference between the Boston and Lakers organization, The Celtics saw a need on their bench, and acquired both Mikki Moore and Marbury, while the Lakers remained stagnant. Hey Lakers, your bench was outscored 40-7 by a mediocre Nuggets bench, enough said.

According to the article, the Celtics were 46-13 when Starbury joined the team. They now sit at 50-18. This puts their record at 4-5 since he joined them. All you guys who say he deserves a break can choke on your words now - the guy truly does know how to bring teams down!
