Roy S. Johnson Blog

Derek Jeter. Chris Paul. Tiger Woods. Danica Patrick.

To most of us, the people mentioned represent elite athletes at (or near) the top of their respective sports. Even more, they're quality people who represent their teams, their sport and their families with class.

To Lenny Dykstra, they're apparently "three darkies and a bitch." Jeter, Paul and Woods, all black men, are also "spearchuckers."

That's based on a conversation - rapt, is more like it - the former Mets centerfielder, car wash mogul, financial guru and failed entrepreneur had with Kevin Coughlin, a former employee at Dykstra's doomed Players Club magazine, who dishes like Maytag about his ex-boss from hell in this month's GQ.

Yes, Coughlin was fired by Dystra, which gives him more than ample incentive to lay out his former boss the way Dykstra crushed catchers at home plate.

Here's the exact excerpt:

...On another occasion, I field a call from Lenny about potential cover subjects while I'm at home; Lenny's on speaker when he proudly states, for both my wife and me, that "nobody can all me a racist -- I put three darkies and a bitch on my first four covers."

The first four Players Club covers featured Derek Jeter, Chris Paul, Tiger Woods and Danica Patrick.

"What was that Lenny?" I ask.

"I said I put three spearchuckers on the cover!" he replies.

To say Dykstra is a racist is like calling Bernie Madoff a thief -- the term just doesn't seem to do justice.

Frankly, though, I wasn't all that shocked when I read those terms allegedly spewed from Dykstra chaw-stained lips. Maybe because I'm of a certain generation just young enough to remember segregation, just young enough to recall a time when every white person you passed on the street saw N----- first and a human being second, I'm just not all that surprised when someone spews this kind of filth.

It's actually more surprising that he was able to keep it inside while still trying to leverage them for his own gain. In some circles, that's called "pimping."

I am surprised he spewed it so freely, and that he said it to someone who was not wearing a hood.

It reminded me of an adage widely held among many African Americans -- both pre and since the miracle of last November -- that no matter how successful, not matter how rich, not matter how much respect and acclaim a black person earns, to some he'll always be just a N-----.

To Dykstra, Jeter, Paul, Woods and Patrick were good enough to sell magazines. But to him they were still just three darkies and a bitch.

If Dykstra holds these views, you have to wonder what he thought of some of the men who helped him in the 1986 World Series with the Mets. What did he think of George Foster, Darryl Strawberry, Kevin Mitchell, Dwight Gooden and Mookie Wilson, the African Americans on that team? What was he thinking as he traveled and showered when them day after day. As he hugged them with joy on the night they won the Series?

And what must the '86 Mets of Latin descent -- Keith Hernandez, Jesse Orosco, Rafael Santana, Bobby Ojeda,Sid Fernandez and Rick Aguilera -- have thought when they read those words attributed to their former teammate?

Chances are, they weren't surprised, either.

Not surprisingly, Dykstra spewed back at Coughlin, calling the story "all lies."

"I lived with [Darryl] Strawberry and [Dwight] Gooden," he told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

And I'm sure they were some of his best friends, too.

Did you hear Tyson bit Holyfields ear????? That's right, who cares. It happened how many years ago? Just like anything relevant that Lenny did. File this story next to that one.

Yea definitely suspect considering he was fired, it could be a very thinly veiled attempt at retribution. Tough to say one way or the other.
Oh, and "miracle last November?" Please. Miracle is a serious stretch, I dont care what your politics are. Birth is a miracle, unexplained healings of life-threatening illnesses might be miracles. That was just a well-run campaign.

There was no miracle in November, more like a disaster! we will paying for the so-called "miracle in November" for years and our children will be paying for electing the "Mesiah" in November. If Dykstra did say those things it is wrong and we are beyond that, but don't tell me Blacl athletes don't say racist things, they are able to getaway with it because they're expressing years of frustration supposedly. How Baracks minisret and the racism that came out of his mouth, the only reason the "mesiah" finally disacvowed him was so he could win the election. So to the writer look at your own people before you start screaming racism.

hey johnson...theres some good reporting there...did you get lennys reaction to this..i just read at the end of your long sad story about how bad you remember things...that he denied saying it .Please grow up all nationalities have faced some form of dicrimination from generation to generation in this great land. Move on the race card is getting old. Besides im tired of so called reporters not doing there jobs and just pulling pieces of news off the wires and injecting their hatred towards certain people in a story about what he said he said...we have more problems in this world than this garbage........

For the record, there are plenty of black racists out there as well. Until you start "reporting" on that, let's give this a rest.
Big deal. Lenny Dykstra is irrelevant. I guess only whites dislike players on their team of another color. Get a life.

wow is this guy serious? what a terrible article..the "miricle" of last nov? give me a break any intelligent person knows 97% of blacks voted for obama so that should tell u where some racism really is. also the writer refers to black as "african americans" while refering to caucasians as "white".i dont have a problem with any person of any color but im so sick of black people crying everytime they hear something they percieve as "racist". the truth is blacks and minorities have a huge advantage in this country. i could go on pretty much all night on the subject of the hypocricy in this country when it comes to racism but those who are reading this and have half a brain know exactly what im talking about.

Why was this even posted on Yahoo Sports? So what if Dykstra may have said racist statements. Who even cares? It's not like he physically attacked black people or did something violent like that. Black people make racist statements all of the time, but almost always get a free pass.

Now that's real journalism. A liitle angry about an allegation, maybe? Nice job trying to push an issue that isn't there unless there is proof. This is an embarrassing article. I'm embarrassed for reading it and embarrassed for responding but couldn't help myself.
    Roy, you're a hack.
Guess what. Last week I started dating my co-workers ex-girlfriend. He then called me a pedophile. No one cared or believed him cause he was a moron. The difference here is you have a platform. Shame on yahoo sports.

    Dear Roy,
Thanks for wasting my last two minutes by enticing me with what appeared to be a real story. I thought you had a real reason to accuse someone of being a racist. I hear there is an opening at the National Enquirer. When you write for them, you don't need anymore support than some disgruntled ex-employee either.

#15 - George Foster was on the 86 Mets for about half the season and then was released. As for the rest of this article, I'd like to thank the writer for calling me and all of my white forebears racists. Maybe when the writer votes for the next white Republican presidential candidate he'll have earned the right to condemn EVERY WHITE PERSON.

If Lenny Dykstra did actually say those things he should be condemed for it..But the author of this article should also be condemed for saying "time when every white person you passed on the street saw N----- first and a human being second"..Isnt the author of this article being very ignorant and prejudice by assuming that EVERY white person saw a N__ first???..Isnt he just as guilty as Lenny Dykstra??..Seems weird to me..But what do I know?..I am not a "journalist"

I find the writer (and I use term loosely) racial comments troubling as well.I do not seek to defend Lenny Dykstra, but to lob the barbs as freely as Mr.Johnson does, while at the same time spewing his almost hidden racism is frankly stunning.Yahoo should really examine who they let write on their sports blogs.
