It's not about LeBron, really. Sure, it is for the Cavs, their fans and for those who believe the Little Franchise That Should put all its hopes for an NBA title in the LeBron Era (however short it may be) on the shoulders of 37-year-old Shaquille O'Neal.

In other words, it's next season or probably not.

But it's not about LeBron.

This trade, the biggest of a major trade season already, is at least as much about legacy. Shaquille O'Neal's legacy.

Should he lead LeBron to the jewelers, should he give Cleveland its first championship in any sport that matters, O'Neal will thrust his Shaqulicious self smack into the debate over the best player of the generation.

And he knows it.

He's been pretty quiet since Kobe won his first ring without him earlier this month. Uncharacteristically so. He was gracious and congratulatory in words, deeds and tweets, even as Kobe was elevated to "best ever" status by some and at least a solid No. 2 by most.

He was also patient, too, though I'm certain he was aware that something was brewing up north, that he was soon going to be paired with the Chosen One, where he'd have the chance to fit his third Young Thing with a ring.

Kobe was the first beneficiary, three times; then Dwyane Wade rode the Big One to the title in '06.

Now, it's LeBron's turn to saddle up.

Or maybe it's the other way around.

Winning rings with Kobe, D-Wade and LeBron would make O'Neal, at minimum, the league's MVT (Most Valued Teammate) of this era.

Certainly the most dominant.

Arguably the best.

That's what it's about. Really.

if he stays healthy then it will be the first for Cleveland. James can then move on to NY or any other money generating city he choose without the stigma of not delivering a championship to cleveland.

Glad to see that Shaq gets to attach himself to another A-list perimeter guard. Steve Nash showed his true MVP value when one of the "supposed" best point guards of all time could not even make the playoffs with the most dominate big man of our era who got to rest for 1/3 of the regular season. So yes, go ahead all praise the man who has never led a team on his own and always will have needed a major scoring threat and true finisher to get him rings. "The best of all time?" I think not. Say that about a player who gets the ball at the end of the game and that would not be Shaq. I am sorry that Cleveland will not win next season, LeBron deserves it and Shaq will disappoint the city of Cleveland cause: they won't get past Orlando if they sign Hedo. Adding Vince Carter and making their starting lineup truly scary is one. If they happen to get past healthy teams in the East such as Boston and Orlando and they see L.A. in the finals, it will be too bad then also cause if Bynum stays healthy and improves as he has done, Kobe is really going to enjoy taking a crap on his plans of getting one more ring and truly ending the LeBron/Kobe debate for good.
I will mourn for the city of Cleveland, but I will rejoice in Shaq's humbling.

Cleveland getting Shaq is a win-win situation. Shaq needs to be relevant again. Coming to Cleveland means the title goes through him now. Stan & Dwight, Kobe & Phil, they all have to see Shaq now before they see the trophy. So Shaq's happy...
As a lifetime Cleveland fan, there's really no downside. It is a 1year experiment with Shaq's salary coming off the books after the season.
Upside - Shaq puts up his 18/8 in 30min per game while Z puts in 12/6 in 18min per game, and gives the Cavs a body to put on Dwight in the playoffs. We double team him less, and get out to their shooters, and make it to see LA(who knows what happens there).
Downside - Shaq & Lebron don't mesh well w/ both needing touches and it doesn't work. Shaq's gone after one year.
No matter what happens either way, we still don't know if Lebron will re-sign, and we'll still have the money to re-sign Lebron & maybe a guy like Bosh too.

Cleveland is now Shaquled with the the thought of what he did in Phoenix. They went from elite to out of the playoffs in no time at all. You could point fingers but the Suns started to fall apart upon arrival. In Cleveland that means Shaq will be taking the ball out LJ's hands, a lot! Also, slowing the game down and clogging up the lane. Shaq is big enough to play against Howard but way to slow. Besides with Vince C. in the Magis line up I think it will be a repeat of last years finals, Lakers winning again.

You guys honestly think that Shaq is going to help Cleveland? Do you think that Mike Brown can coach Shaq? What happened to Phoenix last year when Shaq was "in shape?" The fact of the matter is that Shaq cannot play the way he use to when he was in his prime with ORL And LAL. He will slow down the Cavs and turn them into a half court offense, just like he did with the Suns.

Zachary, I don't see how you figure the championship goes through Shaq. Did you not watch the Finals the last 2 years? The road to he championship goes through LA and it will be that way for a number of years. It's cute that you came up with those storylines of Phil-Kobe and Stan-Dwight, going through Shaq to get to the title. Go work for ESPN or TMZ for that matter. Cleveland couldn't get passed Orlando, not only cuz they couldn't stop Howard, but also cuz they couldn't D those sharpshooters on the perimeter. Don't think Shaq is gonna be able to stop Howard, and he damn sure can't defend the pick and roll. Cleveland should be worried about not only Orlando who I've failed to mention have vince Carter, which just makes them that much harder to defend, even without Hedo. They'll have Nelson, Carter, Lewis, and Howard in their starting line-up compared to LBJ, Shaq and those other no name scrubs. But let's not forget Boston. They may be getting older by the minute, but they still took Orlando to 7 games, minus their best player in KG, something Cleveland could not do. In the end, the guy above you had it right. Let's say the Cavs do make the Finals. They're done for cuz LA will be there alongside them and KB24 will be damned if he gives Shaq that satisfaction of denying him another chip. KB24 will be killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Shaq can tell us all how Kobe's ass taste and then I don't wanna hear another futhamuckin word about who's better between Kobe and LeBron.

Oh yeah, sorry Mike Brown, you're going to lose your job at the end of the season. Truthfully, I think you will be fired before the trade deadline, but they may show some decency and keep you til the end cuz it won't be your fault. Shaq is the real uncoachable one, and you're no Phil Jackson or Pat Riley, you haven't been around long enough to command anyone's respect other than LeBron which is a shame, cuz that alone should be enough to be considered a good coach. Maybe Jerry Buss and Mitch Kupchack will hire you after next season when Phil retires, then they can ell us how your ass tastes too, when you win a chip that same year.

rswowlin- The Cavs were already a half-court offense. That's why Shaq is a good fit. If you watched any basketball at all, you'd know that all season long the experts were complaining that the Cavs didn't push the ball enough. Yet, they continued to win game after game on their way to the best record in the league. Shaq is a simple attempt to neutralize the big men that gave the Cavs so much trouble during the season and especially the playoffs. If it doesn't work, so be it. The Cavs gave up nothing important to get him. But if it does work, the Cavs could be looking at a championship.
