If there had been no Williamses

What if Richard Williams had not had the vision? What if he'd been engulfed by the hopelessness surrounding him and his family in Compton, Calif., and had simply given in to it? What if he never had handed his daughters rackets?

Venus and Serena Williams no doubt would have been successful at whatever careers they chose. By now one of them might have been a doctor, an actress or a teacher. The other a designer, entrepreneur or a rising star in some corporation.

Instead, on Saturday, they will face each other for the eighth time in the final of a Grand Slam, including their fourth final at Wimbledon.

More than any of their peers, the Williams sisters have defined the current generation of women's tennis. Since joining the tour in the mid '90s, Venus and Serena have won 89 tournament titles (singles, doubles or mixed doubles). They've won 37 Grand Slam titles, 17 of them in singles.

They're among several women who have held the No. 1 ranking over the last decade, among the likes of Martina Hingis, Justine Henin, Lindsay Davenport, Jelena Jankovic and currently Dinara Safina. There have been Jennifer Capriati, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic and Amelie Mauresmo.

Yet despite the kind of interest Sharapova and Co. generate, this forever will be defined as the Williams Era. They've outlasted and/or overcome every top challenger, and almost as often as not, a Williams is the last woman standing.

Still, women's tennis has long been conflicted about the Williams sisters, celebrating them one moment, then criticizing, whining or moaning about them the next.

Why don't they concentrate on tennis?

Why don't they play more tournaments?

Why don't they play more Fed Cup?

Why are they trying to be actresses?

Why are they doing their own reality show?

Why are they on the red carpet instead of the practice court?

Why doesn't Richard just sit down?!

But what if they had not come along? What if Richard had bought his girls golf clubs instead, or simply told them to go play basketball?

What if Hingis, a graceful champion, or Davenport, popular and steady at her peak, had been the top players of the era? What if either of them had been the face of this generation?

Ponder women's tennis in the last decade without the Williams sisters' powerful games, engaging personalities and outsized personas. Think of it without their celebrity, which attracted new fans and kept tennis in the cultural "chat rooms" throughout the year. Think of it without their hairstyles, outfits and jewelry, without their buzz.

Think of it without the up-and-down-and-up dramas of their Big Sis vs. Little Sis encounters.

Think of women's tennis without Richard.

Booooring.

But tennis does have the Williams sisters -- and this weekend, so does Wimbledon.

Women's tennis owes more to Venus and Serena Williams than it ever will acknowledge --  at least not until they're gone.

Too bad.

Love your articles man, when you visit these blogs the hatred you found on these sisters are unbelievable. the saddest part they are coming from americans who are rooting for the Russians to win during their July 4th weekend. The commentators, I heard one gave an exasperation exhale when Serena hit a voley during match point telling me she is for Dementieva, i could not believe it. Why does a black girl have to do to win the heart of white America in a white dominated sport. I see both Venus and serena dating white men like Tiger or they speak academic english, they now give good interviews. I guess nothing, racism is forever.

President Obama should honor the family in the White House.
    Father, Williams for his vision, faith, beating economic adversities, and odds many times of the tennis experts;
    Mother, Williamas as supporting partner in player development, family psychologist, and coach;
Williams Sisters for their tough physical and mental training, and unprecedented achievements for playing power tennis for over ten years; never seen before!

I believe that venus and serena will go down as the greatest sister tandam to ever play tennis, black or white. but this is just like america, never giving black people their due until after the fact. unless your blind people just have to be plain stupid not to see that these girls are the best in the world. most of these critical opinions is coming from the same people who did not vote for obama, and now say that he is doing a good job.

shut up, please! the women's game has become boring BECAUSE of the Williams sisters. all they wanna do is hit the ball as hard as they can, and whoever makes the fewest errors wins. that's it. that's their legacy. that's all women's tennis is now, thanks to them. that's why nobody watches, that's why one of the previous comments compared it to NBA/WNBA. there was a time when that was not the case. there was a time when women's tennis was awesome, and more interesting than the men's game. Remember? Hingis, Kournikova, Steffi, Lindsay, and then the Willams' joined in - and it was all so great. Now...it's "boooooring" and nobody cares. Everyone i talk to cringes at watching these two play each other, cuz they never have good matches against each other. Just grunts and errors..."booooring." And shut up, stop framing it like they have "haters" for the sake of victimizing them. All you have to do is watch Serena's post-match interview when she lost to Justine Henin a couple years ago at the U.S. Open, or when Venus blamed Clijsters for "making her play bad," as the reason she lost to her. stop pretending that never happened, or that they have always lacked sportsmanship and humility. if anything they've gotten away with it. it's not racism, they're just bad examples. James Blake is exemplary....Donald Young, Zina Garrison....Chanda Rubin....they would never say the blatantly unsportsmanlike remarks the whole tennis world has heard from the Williams'.

All I can say and hope is that they keep on playing and keep on bringing us the joy of watching two great champions play like true champions. No fuss, no tantrums, no badmouthing. The way the sisters are making a mockery of the seedings should send a clear message to the powers that be. Finally I would like to emphasize that ladies tennis is much more interesting than mens. If anyone has any doubts - see the Serena v Demetieva or the Venus demolition of Safina semi final.

It's just sad when AMERICANS root against the Williams sisters. The hatred toward them is astonishing. However, I do believe that most Americans support them. Of course, 99.99% of those cyber samurais that spew that nonsense against the Williams, would just smile in an African-American's face, and spew there venom behind the safety of a keyboard.

These girls are personalities that women's tennis needed! Love them or hate them, everyone is obviously interested in them. If it weren't for them women's tennis would be lagging behind men's tennis even more. Furthermore, where would American women's tennis be??? With exception of Davenport, there was no American female tennis player even seriously contending for majors in the era between Chris Evert and the Williams sisters. Giving them credit and respect for what they have accomplished does not require that you like them.

People, stop reading and adressing Moe G and the others like him. Intelligent comments go in their ears and out the other. Notice that he says NOBODY watches the Williams sisters. He lies, since he obviously does!
The rest of the intelligent world can not buy enough tickets to see them. And don't worry about the love they receive. Living here in Europe I get to see them on the front page daily. They are real ambassadors to the world and are adored here. Too bad they live in America!

    Moe G,
but why is that the Willams' fault? Why don't you take issue with the poor play oif their opponents? Why don't you take issue with the mental weakness of their opponents? Why don't you take issue wit Safina's ugly, pathetic serving and weak play? If there were no Williamses you would be watching low level junk tennis. Atleast now we can watch high level tennis. Nobody but S and V deserved to make it to the final. The other women are TERRIBLE.

roy johnson i could not agree with you more. the hate and racism towards these tennis titans is disgusting.they have changed both the complexion and quality of womens tennis.when u see the likes of safina as #1 it shows the utter disdain the tennis elite have for the williams, that made it even more enjoyable when Venus dismissed Safina with an air of utter contempt.not to mention when serena beat elena in the third set to go to the final.its simply just a family affair now.

I am from Trinidad. I don't play tennis but I enjoy looking at it. I thoroughly look forward to the Sisters. I would very much prefer to see them in action that the men. They have brougt the sport to a different level. It's not all boring. It's just a joy to see them in action. When they are not playing I loose interest. I will only look at the men's draw to see the finals. But in the Women's draw, I want to see al thematches if I can. They have made a difference despite their adversities. Hats off to them both and continue for as long as the Lord permits.

Tennis would not be what it is without them. I only tune into tennis coverage becuase of their matches. How can anyone argue and say they arent great champions? They have not only dominated the singles court but the doubles as well. What would people rather have a Safina/Dementieva final? To me that would be boring! Their results speak volumes on grass anyways. Out of the last nine years they have won seven times. How does that translate to boring and them being losers?

hahah I didnt notice that moron brought up Kournikova. Kournikova was a great example of all that is wrong with women's tennis. Too many of these starlets want to be pretty more than good tennis players. This is a large part of the reason why I can't really take women's tennis seriously.
