I had to chuckle when I read New York Giants GM Jerry Reese's comments on wide receiver/knucklehead Plaxico Burress. For those sports fans who do not read the police blotter, Burress is in a heap of trouble. He shot himself in the leg at a New York nightclub last fall and is facing 3 1/2 years in jail on an illegal weapons charge.

Burress is still tied to the Giants, though he essentially has blown the five-year, $35 million deal he signed last September. But conventional wisdom – in the zero-tolerance Michael Vick world – would say the franchise should be done with Plax. Like the Atlanta Falcons were done with Vick. Done

But no. Reese says the Giants would welcome back their wayward brother if he were to lean up his legalities and profess to a life of cleanliness (presumably without illegal handguns).

"If things work out and he's on board with what we want coming back, we'd love to have him back," general manager Jerry Reese says.

Let me break down the code:

If things work out … That means should Plax extricate himself from the U.S. legal system and endure the wrath of Goodell. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell must get his pound of flesh.

...and he's on board with what we want coming back. Lord knows what that means. That's GM-speak for "if he decides to stop being stupid." Uh, sure, he'll tell you anything. But ... I'm just sayin'. It ain't easy to stop stupid.

So while most folks focused on the fact that Reese said the Giants would welcome Plax back, here's a reality pill:

For starters, the Giants had no choice. Without Plax, their only true deep threat, they are predictable and, more importantly, stoppable. Teams packed the line of scrimmage and dared Eli Manning to beat them deep. He could not and the Giants went from first to fallible last season. With nothing different in sight.

Secondly, Reese must know in his gut that the chance Plax will pass his two criteria is none to none. Plax will be lucky to plea bargain his way out of jail before the start of the regular season. Then he'd have to endure at least a four-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

I wouldn't be surprised if the penalty were eight games, half a season.

All that said, Reese would look like a benevolent big brother were he to allow Plax to return after he'd cleared those two hurdles.

And he'd be welcoming back the team's "difference maker," the guy who could lead them back to the Super Bowl.

By then, even Michael Vick might be back in the NFL.

No-brainer. No choice. Plax will be back. Duh.

The giants should focus on the draft or free agency and try to get another impact player to Replace Plax, since its like a no way out situation for Plax and he will probably lend up behind bars.

Eli Manning is mediocre w/o plax. Everyone knows it, thats y they need him. Plax make some of Eli's usually off passes catchable. Giants werr too busy making their defense stronger then focusing on the real problem at wide, so now they have to beg plax to come back.

plax is a goner and mentaly deficent he should have shot him self in the head. all the dumb things this guy does there is no excuses for them the giants should let him go and forget. the time hes going to do his contracts going to be up and his career is to, to bad. the giants have money they can get what they need and they dont need someone that ruins there chances for a repet by any meens. plax f up and the giants fined him and hes trying to get it back whats that? not responsible for his own actions and a dumb ass. they pay him to play and you screw that up. and you involve peirce in it excessory to a crime. he was good till he blew his leg off. even T.O. isint that stupid.

bottom line despite all the childish comments...
Giants need him and he needs a second chance. my knee jerk reaction was to get rid of him, but after stopping & thinking, I say give the man a chance for a few reasons. one, (and luckily), he didn't hurt anyone but himself. two, don't judge someone until you walk a mile in their shoes. no one commented that, close to the time Plax shot himself, Steve SMith was robbed at gunpoint in his driveway. oh no, that wasn't a big story. I can now see why he would feel the need to carry. I can see him, should he get past the BS, coming back & having a monster career knowing full well how close he was to losing it all. we all make mistakes, some not as big, and ours don't get reported on in the news. sorry for a bit of a ramble lol

The Giants can't wait for Burress to return because it may never happen. So why is "Big Blue" so desperate? Because without the former- Eli Manning is a quarterback who can only manage the game. I bet Phillip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger would move forward despite the absence of one receiver.

Despite Bloomberg's call for Burress to get the maximum, the team distraction should be encouraged by statistics showing most people charged with second-degree gun possession don't get convicted of that crime.
In all five boroughs, most have the charges knocked down to less serious crimes or see them dismissed. If Burress pleads to the lesser charge of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon - the crime has no mandatory sentence - he could still do some time. Last year, 60% of the men and women convicted of third-degree possession served time, state officials said.
Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan said his office uses the mandatory minimum sentence as leverage to gain gun intelligence and to convince defendants to plea to a class D violent felony, which can carry a year in jail. "While we will convict less people of the arrest charge, we're gaining intelligence on the gun traffickers," he said.

good post christian. I believe the good book says "He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone". It's obvious the guy has made his share of dumb mistakes but it didn't effect his play on the field and he made everyone's job a little easier (Eli, Jacobs, Smith, ect). I 'm pretty sure that everyone that will post or read a post here has done something (no matter how big or small) that they needed or wanted a second chance or some forgiveness). I think that this current situation has scared him straight, if not, shame on him. IF he gets out of this mess, then why not bring him back, it's how the guy earns his living and it helps the team. Everyone seems of admit that he makes Eli a better QB. Redo his contract with a zero tolorence clause, trade for and/or draft another impact receiver (compitition will bring out the best in a person) and go from there. As far as Phillips or Roethlisberger moving forward without their "number 1" reciver, we don't know how they would do. I do know that Roethlisberger came into a great situation with an established offense and solid, solid defense and he has prospered from that. Phillips, on the other hand ,has not put it all together (with his starting receivers intact) yet so the count stands Roethlisberger-2, Eli-1, Phillips-0. Do the Giants need another receiver, yes. Are they pressed, no. With months of offseason, while we are here posting opinions, Jerrry Reese will be doing HIS job to make sure all team needs are met.

Why are the G-men continuing to ignore the gaping hole Plax left on their offense? They've signed what 3 more defensive linemen? Idiots, at least sign 1 middle tier WR! I guess all that depth will payoff when the offense continually goes 3 and out!

Making these comments also gives Plax some trade value: if Reese was adamant about not allowing him back even if he could play, teams would just wait for the Giants to cut him.

B.A., why does everyone think that all team problems should be solved within the first 2 days of free agency? Like I've posted before, we've got a whole offseason of trades, deals and the draft to come. The roster is not set by a long shot. I don't think, Mr. Reese is on vacation and I'm sure he knows that the G-men neen another receiver. Once again, let Jerry Reese do HIS job.

The Giants don't need to waste free-agent money on a middle tier WR. If they keep improving like they did last year, Smith, Hixon, and Manningham will be middle tier or better before you know it. The Giants signed a couple guys for d-line depth so Kiwanuka can move back to LB. Along with signing Boley, they made the line and linebacker corp better. Now they can focus on WR early in the draft, where they can get a guy with height and jumping ability to replace Plax. When Eli's off, his passes sail high, so get another guy who's going up to get those balls. That's how Plax made corners look silly with only average speed. After picking a good WR early, grab a RB, a guy for o-line depth, and maybe a couple DB/S types for depth.

    Matt V,
I agree with most of what you said, but you might want to listen in on the plans of the Giants Defense more. Kiwanuka will NOT be a LB next season. They will have a sick 4 DT and 4 DE rotation. I believe we still have Danny Clark, now Boley, AP, Wilkinson, Blackburn, and Goff at the LB. The focus of the draft should, like you said, be a Tall sure handed receiver. Then pickup future OL, and DB or S. The rest of the team is good to go. Anything less than an NFC Championship will be disappointing. Oh yeah, how about the Eagles getting rid of Dawkins? How many of you Giants fans are still laughing at that? I know I am.
