SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas Tech will take on Texas State today at 6 p.m. on ESPN3.com.
Here are three things to keep an eye on during the game:
1. Tech hoping for a fast start
The best thing the Red Raiders can do is take control of the game's momentum very early on. With Darrin Moore, Javon Bell and Tyson Williams back in the lineup, the Tech passing game should be at full strength and the goal will be to push the ball downfield.
Look for quarterback Seth Doege to try to connect with Moore and Bell very early on in the game.
2. Another good day for the Tech defense?
The Red Raiders looked fantastic defensively last week against Northwestern State. It's impressive when anyone holds an opponent to 84 total yards but even more so when said team ranked among the worst defenses in the country this year.
Texas State will present Tech with more of a challenge because it runs that option game the Red Raiders struggled with so much last season. The Bobcats successfully exposed the Red Raiders' run defense in last year's season-opener, but Tech believes it has a better unit this year.
3. Seth Doege needs a bigger day
Going back to getting the passing game involved early, Seth Doege needs a better day than he did against NSU. He's behind pace to reach the numbers -- 4,000 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions -- he recorded last season after posting 199 passing yards, a touchdown and an interception against the Demons
Tech should be able to handle Texas State through the air so expect to see Doege make up some ground this evening.
