Women with most tennis Grand Slam finals appearances

Serena Williams advanced to the U.S. Open semifinals with a victory in her quarterfinal match on Thursday, September 8. Despite being the 28th seed in the tournament, Williams is one win away from reaching the final. If she does that it would be her 17th appearance in a Grand Slam final. That puts Williams fifth on the list of women with the most Grand Slam finals appearances in the open era. Here are the top five:

1. Chris Evert - 34

Evert has appeared in more Grand Slam singles finals than any tennis player of the open era. She did this between 1973 and 1988. Her final appearance in a final came at the 1988 Australian Open. That was her sixth appearance in an Australian Open final and that was her worst of any Grand Slam. She reached the Wimbledon final 10 times and the U.S. Open and French Open final nine times each. She reached at least two finals every year between 1973 and 1985 except one. Evert owns 18 titles overall.

2. Martina Navratilova - 32

If you count doubles finals, Navratilova would have a much higher total. However, her singles appearances are sufficient enough. Like Evert, she has reached the final of each Grand Slam at least six times and has 18 titles. Navratilova had her greatest success at Wimbledon, reaching the final 12 times and winning it nine times. She appeared in every Grand Slam final from the 1984 French Open through the 1987 U.S. Open.

3. Steffi Graf - 31

Graf appeared in fewer finals than Evert and Navratilova but does own more titles with 22. She reached 13 straight finals between the 1987 French Open and 1990 French Open. She is also the only player to win every Grand Slam at least four times each.

4. Evonne Goolagong Cawley - 18

Cawley reached 18 finals and was one of the early stars of the open era. Her best tournament was the Australian Open where she reached seven finals and won four titles between1971 and 1977. She reached three finals in a year four different times.

5. Serena Williams - 16

Williams has an impressive record of 13-3 in Grand Slam finals. She has reached the French Open only one time, defeating her sister in 2002. Williams has won all five of her finals appearances at the Australian Open and has won four of six at Wimbledon. She reached the U.S. Open final four times between 1999 and 2008 and won it three of those times.
