Williams eyes more success after winning in Australia

By Julian Linden

MELBOURNE, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Serena Williams jetted out of Australia on Sunday with a suitcase full of trophies and her heart set on stockpiling even more silverware.

The 28-year-old American won the women’s singles title for a fifth time, teamed up with sister Venus to win the doubles for a fourth, and has no plans of stopping.

“I don’t see an end now,” she told reporters after her 6-4 3-6 6-2 over Belgian Justine Henin.

“I feel like as long as I’m happy and I want to do it and I enjoy being out there, (I’ll keep playing).

“Sometimes I think it gets a little bit redundant but I really love playing the slams.”

Williams’s next major goal is the French Open, her least successful grand slam event. She won on the red clay of Paris in 2002 but has not won there since.

“I only have one but hey that’s not bad, if at the end of the day that’s all I have at least I have it,” she said.

“My whole goal is just to get fit because I plan on playing singles and doubles at Paris. So, if I do that, and I’m fit enough, then maybe I’m a chance.”

Williams now has 12 grand slam singles titles, joining Billie Jean King in equal sixth place on the all-time list behind Margaret Smith Court (24), Steffi Graf (22), Helen Wills Moody (19), Martina Navratilova (18) and Chris Evert (18).

Although she has no plans to retire, Williams said it was unlikely she would catch all if any of the women in front of her—so she has set her sights on the men.

92K MISSION

Pete Sampras is the leading American man with 14 while Roger Federer is the overall men’s leader with 15, before Sunday’s final against Andy Murray.

“I just want to be with Roger. So Roger, can you please let me catch up,” Williams said.

“I was trying to hunt him down, but the guy keeps winning. I’m like, dude, stop winning. The guy is amazing.”

Williams also wants to start using her success on the court to help the less fortunate.

She has opened a school in Africa and plans to teach a class there in March, and launched her 92k Mission to raise money for the survivors of the Haiti earthquake.

The fund was called 92k because that was the amount of money she was fined by the International Tennis Federation for her foul-mouthed attack on a line judge at last year’s U.S. Open.

Williams, who is also on a two-year probation, was on her best behaviour in Australia but said she hoped people would forgive her for her outburst in New York.

“I just want to keep people aware that it’s okay to make a mistake but learn from it,” she said.

“One moment doesn’t make one person’s career. It’s all about the moments you put together. The fine was a little bit exorbitant but that was that and it turned out to be a big thing.

“Sometimes things happen for a reason.” (Editing by Peter Rutherford; To query or comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com)

Teddyo...Is there something in your past that someone keeps throwing in your face? Sometimes marital partners do that to "one up" their partner in an argument. I hope you find peace and forgiveness.

    Stay well my friend.

Well it looks like no matter what Serena does on the courts now, or how many GSs she still wins, that USO albatross will forever hang around her neck.
Should've thought before she acted. No racism here (and she's no Rosa Parks!!!!)

Serena is the best in all active wta players. She has proven it over and over again. Her intense emotion or her bad reaction to the tidious line call is perfectly understandable and non-hypochritical. She's human and human react vehemently when felt they're done wrong and a sense of unfairness was felt. The September 2009 incident was the third time a bad call was made for Serena:

    1) 2004 QF against Capritti; the ball hit the line and the official called for "OUT." Even Martina Navratilova cried for it and said: "my goodness it was in, I feel bad for Serena."

    2) incident with C. Navarro; the ball hit Navarro's shoulder and supposed to add a point to Serena's. the official said she didn't see it and Navarro lied about it. sha said: "I didn't feel it." they review the hawkeye tape several days after, the ball hit Navarro's shoulder. It didn't matter much because Serena won anyway. But, it proved how the WTA officials are unfair to Serena.

    3) Us Open SF, Serena was down a set and 3 games in the 3rd set. An ambitious line woman called for falt: it was not falt (because several weeks passed by... with Serena and WTA officias...l they watched the play and the line woman was wrong, it was not falt) Serena was madly angered by the 3rd incident because it only happens to Serena. Never to Henin, Sharapova, Azarenka who literally clobbered the official, t Federer, to Roddick. I don't blame Serena for the vehemently outburst because prejudice was obvious.

So, that is one reason the tennis world didn't suspend Serena. Another reason for non suspension was, Serena is the hottest and most powerful woman athlete in the world. If they'd suspened her: many sponsors won't provide for WTA. And the ratings plus ticket sales would drop tremendously. Bad for the tennis business. The third reason for non suspension for the tennis star was WTA officials already caused so much damage for Serena: 2 possible trophies and grand slam titles (could have been 14 titles instead of 12). Serena has the power and will to come back from a set down and 40 love to be able to win the game and the entire round. We watched it happened 4 times in Australia. in Medibank with Rezai, Aravane; QF with Azarenka at the Aussie Open, F at the Aussie Open with Henin. And before that 2009 QF with Svetlana Kutznetsova down a set and 2 games...Serena came back and won the round. So, you see? Serena was over angered by the unfairness treatment of the WTA tour to her. She and Venus are singled out for unfaqir treatment. For example, "Mary Carillo, Pam Schriver, and Mary Jo Fernandez kept their negative comments and unfair chatof Serena and Venus. And to top the unfairness deal: they flashed the US Open tirade during the Williamses games and round. they were so didtasteful and overly low class that many of our friendsw said they muted their TV so they wouldn't here the unethical comments. Something has never changed: even in this ultra modern society where blacks are more educated and well off than many other skin colour people; they are still haunted with prejudice notions. But, in 2050 the ball is going to turn around because black colored skin will no longer be considered "minorities but, majorities." They are not minorities these days, anyway. More and more blacks are holding higher positiom in in our governmen and myriad of establishmentt. There are more elite blacks now. They are more and more black youngsters that are graduating from college with high honors. In media like newspaper, televisiom, movies, and businesses too; there are more and more blacks holding the highest position in the company. Because they were being persecuted they strove to attain excellence in every facet of life , including tennis, modeling, to name a few.

How can one have "delusions of persecution" when the other is making their intention clear! You know the definition of racism if you are calling the other person names like "cracker", or "monkey"! That is a clear intent! Apparently, all it takes to turn someone into a flaming racist is to get them to believe that somehow, no matter how many societal advantages they enjoy, THEY ARE THE VICTIM!!! They, in turn, feel threatened by any advances another societal group might make because they feel that they will now LOSE the lofty status that they have precariously held onto. In their minds then, if Serena Williams becomes a tennis champion, then she must be doing something illegal to have accomplished it! Her every move and mood is scrutinized, and her every action or reaction causes her to be demonized! When Mark McGwire hit 70 HR in one season, there were "rumblings" about steroid use but the mainstream media left him alone for the most part, but when BARRY BONDS broke that record, hitting 73 HR, the stuff hit the FAN!!! I am not deluded and you shouldn't be either! There is a HUGE double-standard abounding out there!

Serena has always had the body she has now and is only 3 lbs. heavier now than when she turned pro! That girl is not using any performance enhancing drugs, she is simply a great natural athlete, who has added amazing tennis savvy to her natural abilities! A lot of the people who accuse her already KNOW she's not juicing; they just cannot stand to see her WIN, so they come up with a justification that works on that planet they are from!!!

This is not the 1920's when all African Americans got to do was carry the golf clubs! Oh, and just so you are well informed, WE AIN'T GOIN' BACK!!

Tennis knows no national or cultural boundaries. Fed and Serena represent the best of tennis and represent ALL of those who love the game everywhere. They both belong to ALL of us. Let's put aside all of the pettiness and celebrate 2 masterful performances that has warmed ALL of our hearts....even the hearts of those who are in denial.

    Stay thirsty my friends.

Actually mr Dennis - alot of the posters on here dont understand the definition of 'racism' and that is more than evident in such whimsical claims.

If someone says they dont like the way a person carried on during a post match press conference - they are all of a sudden racist - absurd - most people on here claim racism on a whim, almost like they are clutching at straws!

But trying to get anyone to admit that - never! they read into something that just isnt there - and that is the saddest thing of all - DELUSIONS OF PERSECUTION

Actually a lot of the people who make racist comments on these blogs, log on with the intention of venting because they are powerless to do so ELSEWHERE in life! You can feel the pain and unhappiness with every word! It used to upset me, until I saw it for what it was! It's actually quite pathetic when you think about it. Most of these people are looking for a place to vent and be heard because nobody else pays them any attention! They get to come on here, hide behind their computers make a controversial comment (that they often already know is untrue) that they would NEVER have the courage to say to anyone's face, and then sit back and soak up the attention they so desperately crave!! They do not care that the attention they draw is NEGATIVE, just that SOMEONE is finally noticing! IT's LIFE AT IT's SADDEST.....

@MANNY Very good point... I have been saying this all along and Ive been looking at tennis long before Serena and Venus came on the scene... the outlandish comments by some hateful people on here have been amazing but not surprising. Serena had a nasty outburst last year that I dint agree with and yes im a black man and there is no room for that in tennis period but to hear people say things like she needs to take her attitude and go back to Compton and things like that is uncalled for and classless.. comments about her weight and her father looking like a gorilla under scores the hate of some people... I guess they wil continue knashing their teeth until the enamel wears out because they will be around for a long time to come...

    Manny,

"It's a matter of an individual's perception, Serena's ripping of the official during the US Open weighs more to me than the normal catty or bratty behaviors of the other women players. It's a different level of aggression and it's aggression directed towards an official, not an opponent. So if you disagree with me, that's fine."

I'm sorry, you call it perception, I call it double standards. Federers's outburst during the very same tournament is rarely bought up here, but people still harp on Serena. She was wrong. She got fined. She apologized. I'm focused on the 2010 AO, not the 09 USO. Here's my views on "perception" here, one outburst by Serena doesn't stack up to nearly CONSISTENT poor sportsmanship and crappy attitude towards officals and other players, from the likes of Jankovic. One outburst against an offical is not on the same level as watching guys like Conners and McEnroe for years, who made a CAREER doing just that. Again, I have a bigger problem here among people that call themselves tennis fans that seemed to have only watched tennis for the last 6 years, and seem to think that Serena has a monopoly on occassional bad behavior, is frankly, dishonest. Especially seeing that she has a long way to go before matching many other players, both male and female, when it comes to over-the-top on-court antics. I've been watching this game for quite a long time, and she's not even near the top of the list, even among American players, when it comes to unfortunate on-court antics. This in my view, makes any claims of Serena being the "rudest" player suspect. I can fill this page up with tennis players, both male and female, starting from the early 80s, who have had (often more than one) outbursts/and or berated officials during a major tournament.

And no, the tackly'lowlife comments was not directed towards you.

    @methodical
first of all, I appreciate you didn't call me a racist right off the bat like most people here.

It's a matter of an individual's perception, Serena's ripping of the official during the US Open weighs more to me than the normal catty or bratty behaviors of the other women players. It's a different level of aggression and it's aggression directed towards an official, not an opponent. So if you disagree with me, that's fine. But to have a sensible discussion from the rest of the crowd is impossible because everybody here thinks I dislike Serena because she's black. One of my all-time favorites is Chandra Rubin, not the best player but definitely one of the more graceful ones. So I object to the racist label.

I have no trouble saying that Serena is a great player, but as a person, I like Venus a whole lot better, even though her game has been on a decline. I hope the "tacky low-life" comment was not directed at me, well, I don't think it was anyway.

    Manny,

"Well, guess what, a lot of people don't agree with you, but do you have any room for other people's opinions or do you just think we're all racists for not liking her?"

I have no problem with people not liking her. Personally I like Venus better, but it is hard to argue Serena is the better between the two. What gets old is the immature gorilla comments, and the double standards of pointing out Serenas attitude while ignoring similar offenses other female tennis players have committed. I had no problem pointing out the same jackassery from like minded idiots, when the same like-minded fools would rip on Davenport because of her size and appearance, because she wasn't as "cute" as some of the Russian players. Bigotry isn't my biggest issue with the comments here, it's the double standards. Am I biased? Yes. I'm an American man that supports American athletes. Just as I rooted for Capriati, Navratilova, Evert, and Davenport in the past, I root for the Williiams sisters today. And I have no problem pointing out hypocrisy and tacky, low-life comments directed at our American athletes.

@ Willy, Serena's the rudest? That's reaching. I won't even bring the mens side (which blows away that arguement off the bat) into this and stay apples to apples: Jankovic. Hingis. Even Evert was no angel who often ridiculed Navratlovas sexuality and insulted officials. Google "drama queen" and Jankovic in the same search, and I promise you'll get hundreds of hits. If you want to count consistant rude on and off court comments and behavior, Serena would have to try alot harder to come close to Jankovic and Hingis alone in jackass behavior, attitude, and unsportsman-like conduct. I've been watching tennis since the early 80s, and though Serena has sometimes made unfortunate comments, she has a long way to go to even match several other female tennis players I've watched since then, in the category of unfortunate behavior, attitude, and comments. Again, going back to Hingis, not only did she famously berate an opponent before a match (Steffi Graf, who would go on to hand her, her ass on a silver platter) she was busted while using cocaine on the tour. Serena would have to go alot further to top that. Funny how short the memories of some people are here....

    ManyK, said
you're sad. you have this great need for everyone in the world to agree with you. Serena is a historic figure in women's tennis, no doubt, she is the RUDEST women to ever grace the court. Period! Hands Down! Bar None!

RUDEST??? Because of that one incident? What she did was way over the line, but what the lines judge did was over the line to. She made sure Serena couldn't come back from match point down. I bet has Serena not been point pentalized she would have called another. It's another anti-American judge not wanting an American to win.

Some one think being the rudest would mean putting your hand out to stop play and then deny it... or maybe some people would think RUDE was faking an injury after losing the 2nd set to stop another players momentum is just RUDE. Some might even think that playing in a grand slam final and retiring while a set down and 1-3 or 1-4??? down and not allowing the champion to celebrate is RUDE. Some might also think that someone who is on court and cheats by having their coach to coach from the stands is RUDE. It just depends, but I am pretty sure all that trumps Serena, but then again I wonder who has done all of those?

Another thing you people on here talking crap about people saying Justine Henin wasn't/isn't doing drugs and saying we are the stupid ones... Well you may be the clueless ones with your eyes closed. Do you all actually think that Justine really left tennis because she wasn't happy and didn't like it no more? She said in May of 09 she didn't like it one bit and would never come back. She also said I don't keep up with or follow tennis anymore. Then she turns around and says it's time for Dinara to stand up and win a Slam and prove she is 1. Uhmmm I thought you didn't keep up with tennis? Silly Henin being flaky as usual and lying.

She won 10 of 14 tournaments in 07 and came back in 08 playing like crap. She says she just lost the fire and didn't like tennis anymore. HELLO!!! Drugs make you care less and less about the things you once enjoyed. That's not even the best part tho. When she retired she asked for her name to be removed imediately. By removing your name from the rankings you can't be drug tested. If you're still on the ranking list you can be. There was no reason what so ever to have your name removed unless it was for that purpose. I am sure she got her act together and cleaned out her system before she came back, so maybe there won't be anymore drugs or steroids for her, but who knows she is known best for cheating the game.

How do you all Justine fans like her illegal coaching? Serena never even uses her coach on court when she can and Justine's coach is signaling every point lol. It's so sad when you have to cheat to win all your matches.

I was hoping one of the Chinese women would make the finals. At this point, I am not a fan or either of the women's finalist so I won't bother watching just reading the results.

As far as China politically undemocratic and having human rights abuses, this is not the issue. There are other countries who have outstanding athletes but terrible abusive governments, but we hear little about them because they are not competitive with the US economically.

China has made giant strides from the days of War Lords and European occupation.

I was pulling for Serena and Henin. I think this will be a Great Final.

I have tio say that Na Li, however, has consistently moved up her game, we may see more of her and Zeng Jie in the future and I think this is wonderful. If China decides tennis is an area of international competition that they wish to battle in, these two women are the first rank, I predict many more to come and the men as well, in a few years.

I am not a fan of China as a country, terrible human rights and freedom issues, but it's hard to argue with their results... Obviously effective, but the people, the individuals are worthy of applause, I just don't feel the ends, justify the means.

I will say it does look like there are alot of people very concerned with skin color and ethnic heritage on this forum - both ways. I do think Black is beautiful (not the only beautiful color), I'm a medium brown, white guy, always trying get more tan ;-)

The Serena-Henin match should be EPIC; Henin handled her semi-final opponent with ease...

CONGRATS to both Zheng and Li for making history and each having GREAT Austrailian Open runs! I'm sure that they'll BOTH be making more history as the year and the seasons progress...
