Djokovic switches sponsor to Sergio Tacchini

  • Print

LONDON (AP)—Novak Djokovic is leaving Adidas for Sergio Tacchini, the same brand worn by his idols.

Djokovic said Saturday he has signed a 10-year sponsorship deal with the Italian company starting next year.

He said “my own idols Pete Sampras and John McEnroe have won almost all titles … wearing the Sergio Tacchini logo.”

The third-ranked Serb announced the deal on the eve of the ATP World Tour finals in London. As part of the deal, Sergio Tacchini will produce four Djokovic-inspired clothing lines each year. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Djokovic won last year’s ATP finals in Shanghai. He plays Nikolay Davydenko in his first round-robin match of the tournament, which starts Sunday at London’s O2 Arena.

AnneP had mentioned in her comment that she thought she remembered some controversy about Djokovic's Adidas shoes. I don't remember that, but I do remember hearing about how Martina Hingis filed suit against Tacchini because she said her feet were injured by their shoes, as Maestra pointed out. I would hope that they've fixed any problems they had. Shoes are so high-tech these days I would think you would have to have a very technical design team just for shoes - not just so they look good, but they perform and are ergonomic. I don't know that a fashion house like Tacchini has made that kind of investment.

Call me old fashion , but SLEEVELESS and COLLARLESS (for men) doesn't look classy enough ,( that scary hairy underarms ) ,T-shirt's alike for body builder. I also prefer the shirt to be tucked inside the shorts , sometimes if it's too long or too big the shirt can effect your service motion . I'm watching the match b/t Del' Potro and Murray right now, and learned "what not/need to do from D'Potro"

    @ pete'sbest14
S-Tacchini has no connection with Serbian (Soviet Union block). btw, I love to read your post . It help my writing in English . Thank.

Del'Potro can not stay at the base line an compete against Murray. I want to see Federer (at his best) take on Murray. Good Tennis . Good Golf . What Ever make you HAPPY.

Was there not some contraversy about Novaks shoes in the past? Addidas was criticized by some commentators for not supplying Novak better shoes ( Wimbledon I think) because he was slipping and falling. As to the barbs about " lets make more money guys", everyone of these players aspire to reach the top , not only for the love of the game ,but also for the reimbursments that come with that. People, this is their job. Most atheletes have very short careers and have to contend withaches and pains from wearing their bodies down . The smart ones make the most of their succes to ensure they bear the fruits of their labour. Sport is their PHD.

Comfort and performance trump "chic" every day of the week for a tennis player, especially if you don't "need" the money..
I know he's been courted, but that means little in athletics~Surely hope Novak didn't make a poor or hasty decision at the behest of "others"...which we all know can happen too~
And you're right Martina did retire the first time because of her feet..and claimed it had to do with the "ill-fit" of her shoes. Think playing with a "tiny" pebble under the padding of the shoe, that would be torture!

    Shoes and apparel

Borg had different apparel (fila) and shoes (tretorn, diadora), even diff rackets in diff countries.)..
    So did Jimbo - ST/Nike, JSC/Converse, etc

Hope they don't make the same mistake with the shoes they gave Martina HIngis. Didn't she claim the shoes she wore by ST dorked up her feet and that's why she retired the first time?

Djoko that is good for a change. The brand does not have anything to do with the game. You can win a game even without a shirt on. Win the championship with or without an ST and your fans all over the world will be exceedingly glad. Good Luck!

I always loved the old Sergio Tacchini shirts that Mac wore in the early 80s - the bi-colored, just top-of-the-shoulders-colored - he wore them in navy, and also in red. I bet it helps Novak; if the styling is good, this could bring many fortunes to him. The adidas outfits that he has been wearing have always looked to me like practice/workout style sets, not worthy of the big tournaments. Anyone know what i mean? i guess i mean, not classy enough. I think that if the ST designs that he chooses or that they pay him to wear are classy, i actually think it may help his career. in a feng shui (sp?) sort of way, i mean. it's not gonna change his game, just his luck, is what i mean/think. sorry, i know some of us will think, "how stupid!". haha

Does not make too much sense, other than making more money...he is already making a lot of money! I hope he is not making same mistake as he did when he switched the racket - which cost him some titles and impacted his play this year as per his own admission.

Adidas provided him with both clothes and shoes - they make some of the best tennis shoes around. Which brand shoes is he going to wear going forward? I hope he stays with the same, otherwise it can impact his game - not as much as the racket swtich, but still...

I wonder why he is changing, other than the obvious, money. You used to wear Tacchini, any Serbian connection to the label??
One thing for certain Novak has a solid physique and can get away with wearing shorts and shirt made of burlap so he'll look good in these new designs. I personally liked Rafa's "sleeveless" shirts, but think his plaid shorts are a bit "retro" for my taste (I LIVED retro, so don't really don't want to "revisit" yesteryear all that much).
Point is their play will be the same and their shot-making skills are what I look at, for the most part :-)
