Nadal, Ferrer complete Spain’s sweep of Czechs

  • Print

BARCELONA, Spain (AP)—Spain lifted the Davis Cup for the second straight year on Sunday after completing a 5-0 victory over the Czech Republic in the final.

Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer both won singles matches at the Palau Sant Jordi to complete the sweep as Spain won for the fourth time since 2000 while becoming the first nation since Sweden in 1998 to retain the title.

“It may look like routine but I think to win the Davis Cup two years in a row is spectacular,” said Spain captain Albert Costa, whose team beat Argentina in last year’s final. “We need to talk about this a lot … we need to remember. It’s important.”

Spain had already clinched the best-of-five series when Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco won the doubles match on Saturday. The second-ranked Nadal followed up on Sunday by beating Jan Hajek 6-3, 6-4 and Ferrer beat Lukas Dlouhy 6-4, 6-2 on the indoor clay.

The 102nd-ranked Hajek replaced Radek Stepanek for the meaningless match, and the 465th-ranked Dlouhy, a doubles specialist, replaced Tomas Berdych.

The weekend was a big success for Nadal, who arrived in poor form following a four-match losing streak.

“To finish the second half of the season with this ending is very important and nice, especially after all of the problems I had over those two months,” said Nadal, who improved to 12-0 in Davis Cup singles matches on clay.

Spain now has won 18 straight Davis Cup ties at home—stretching to 1999— and 20 straight on clay. Costa was on the team that won here in 2000, while Nadal helped lead the team to victory at Seville in 2004.

“Today’s win was more emotional than when I won it as a player,” Costa said.

The players took their time to celebrate on the court afterward as they posed with the enormous trophy and waved Spanish flags with the 16,000 fans.

“I feel privileged to be Spanish,” Verdasco said. “And to have teammates like these.”

Spain’s streaks will be put to the test in the first round in March against Switzerland, which could be led by Roger Federer.

There have been 23 previous final sweeps, with Sweden’s 5-0 win over the United States in 1997 the last.

Spain improved to 4-2 against the Czechs, who played in their third final and first since 1980 when it won as Czechoslovakia.

    Nadal uber forehands: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikNlsRBT8-0
In the video Hewitt at the time was still very fast and Rafa was just burning him! I'd like to see Rafa bring this forehand back to his gameplan. Rafa would be devastating to the bigger players that love his high bounce topspin especially on hardcourts! Two topspin forehands to the backhand of his opponent and then a uber forehand crosscourt they could not stop it. Just my opinion.

I'm glad nadal is feeling better but this doesn't really say much about his results against the top 10 players. It's not like he was having trouble beating the players out of the top 10 when he came back to the U.S. Open. I like Nadal but since he's no longer running around the court like a rabbit he's going to have to pick of some skills like the other players have. As you get older skill is what you are going to have to rely on and honestly overeall I don't think his skill surpasses most of the players in the top 10...well not yet. Nadal is a very hard worker and I'm sure Tony will have Nadal practicing a new weapon.

You are a Nadal fan and you seem to respect Federer. Nice.

But your complaint about Federer fans being spiteful to Nadal is purely subjective. If you are a regular reader of the posts on the tennis blog you can easily see that it is a two way traffic. As is the case with every thing in life there are bound to be some disparities here and there .

I am a Federer fan through and through, but I respect Nadal as a player and as a person. The only problem is that I do not think Nadal is that great a player just because he happened to defeat Federer narrowly in two epic finals though his supremacy on clay is not questionable. Any top five player when in the form of his life can achieve that.

Fran(110)...I think most on this thread would have to decline your invitation as we like to have a clear mind when we watch tennis and we like to bang on our keyboards to post after matches.

You may want to go to a football or soccer thread to find a taker...or maybe golf.

You may also want to go get tested at the clinic because you are obviously a nasty girl.

    Stay thirsty my friend.

Hey 107, 97, others who commented on my 91:

I admit Federer is a more complete tennis player, in the sense that he can win with that effortless quality that is just amazing. He's more diverse, complex, and technically outstanding. Nadal can be frustrating, these last few months he has played in a way that has bothered a lot of people (returning without thinking, returning ridiculously short, not running down the rival, not attacking). Maybe he is just getting back into form, still worried about the injury. He's depressed they say as well because of his parents breaking up, which breaks up this tight and supportive family unit.
And as someone mentioned it is not clear he is getting the coaching he needs. But hey, a year ago he was easily the best player in the world. He can go further, Federer no longer can. When he has beaten Fed he has done it in very exciting ways. He is psychologically very strong, which makes you have faith in him, he has to be able to come back, I definitely want him to.
Last year he played all February and early March while Federer rested, and that was the difference of the whole season. Nadal has to say no to a few tournaments, lose a few points, stay healthy and peak for Roland Garros and win it, and do what he can, as best he can, the rest of the year. For me that will be enough of a legacy.

I have great respect for Federer and Nadal, although Nadal is my guy. They are both great players with strong work ethics and just enough humility to believe that there is always room for improvement. And who will ever forget five-setter at Wimbledon? It will go/has gone down in history as one of the greatest matches ever. Anything better and more intense than that contest would send countless people to emergency rooms with cardiac arrest.

Unfortunately, both players have had their struggles and those struggles led to a decline in their game. But even with that, they managed to rotate at #1 and #2 in the world. Down turns are inevitable -- it's unrealistic to think that a player can continue to win all the time. I kind of look at Nadal and Federer like the stock market. They gained and gained and then they leveled out, or as is said, the market "corrected" itself. When illness and injuries occur and momentum is lost, it can take some time to get momentum back on your side. When Federer lost his groove and fell out of the #1 spot, people were saying he'd never be able to achieve that ranking again. We all see that wasn't true. And so it is possible that Nadal could regain his form and confidence and return to the #1 spot. Or maybe some new "gunslingers" will ride into town and wrest the #1 and #2 spots away from Roger and Rafa. Who knows? But it should be an interesting season ahead of us. I'm looking forward to it.

    #91 Jeffery S:

Amazing post! Your articulation, insightfulness and intelligence quite obviously show you are more than the "casual" tennis observer~
I hope (all) Rafa and Roger fans will read and more importantly learn from your comments. Sadly, I think, those who may need it the most, will least likely understand your meaning.
The best thing for Rafa and Roger ARE Rafa and Roger~They MAKE each other better. They in fact raise the bar for the other~
I think those of us who honestly love both these guys understand how much hard work, discipline, dedication and SACRIFICE being at the pinnacle of your sport takes.
I totally agree with you regarding when fans of one or the other seemingly must resort to being SO negative when the other hits a rough spot or has health or injury problems.
People love to invent things, spin theories and grasp straws~
Fans who would be that bitter or negative are not truly following either of these men's lead..BOTH are TRUE Champions, classy and I hope have MUCH more tennis left in their stellar careers~
I think some people simply always resort to "negativity" because they can't figure out "what" else, exactly, to do..so to them, bashing the other seems a novel idea!
And of course these boards are filled with hate, anger, and rage then when their "favorite" loses they go off on a tangent at the ONE who beat their favorite..or simply because they 'can'~
Thank you for your marvelous post..it was indeed illuminating, composed and civilized~

Its one thing to beat Berdych and Hajek (what's his ranking? 200??) on clay at home, in Barcelona; playing other top players on the ATP tour is a whole new other ball game!! Nadal has not beaten a player in the top 10 since May!!! He didn't even win a set out of 3 matches he played in London last week ... Unless something dramatic happens, this is my projection for the 4 majors next year: Australian: Del Potro; French: Federer; Wimbledon: Federer; US Open: Del Potro / Soderling / Djokovic. Cheers!

With all due respect, I suggest you actually read my post before responding to it. Where in my post was I fighting, insulting anyone, being disrespectful, or pointing fingers? Nowhere, In fact, the first thing I said is that I have great respect for Nadal and all of the game's other players. I post on these blogs often, and I always show that respect. What followed was a discussion on how I see the first part of Nadal's season playing out. Simply put, it is an opinion I have formed based on watching Nadal for the past several months. Next, I responded to a comment from another post that I found erroneous. That concluded my post. Nowhere was I disrespectful to anyone, so by implying that I was, your post is basically irrelevant.

Hey Cheetah, now that you have shi$ on yourself and left out in the wild, guess what? Your getting older, you are wounded, you are bleeding, your in the scope of every hunter in the land. You have a lot more predators now that they have seen the "chink" in your armor. The younger hunters are going to be all over you when you stumble or slow down for an instant. You should be worried. You should get more rest and eat better. But don't hide in a cave, because you will be found no matter what rock you are under. And remember,

tiger, can you do me a huge favor? Take your name off your phone. My wife might be calling you.

Look all you guys ,lets not argue and compare nadal with federal. Both guys are great tennis players with their own styles.I think both still have pretty lots of years to play and win tournament especially nadal as he's much younger than federal. In any professional sports, players win some, lose some.Sometimes certain player has to stop playing due to medical reason, and upon recovery, managed to win tournament after tournaments.Nadal is one of them.He seems to have recovered pretty well, judging the way he played in the just concluded davis cup tournament .But to say nadal would not even drop a set and would win all 2010 four GS is indeed not realistic. What is realistic of nadal is I'm pretty confident he will play his best tennis in any tournament he's in. Win or lose,I'm pretty sure nadal would remain humble. It's these quality that I'm one of his biggest fans.
