Fact: Serena Williams withdrew from the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati with a swollen toe, one day after winning her opening-round match.
Fact: Serena's friend Kim Kardashian is getting married this weekend in Los Angeles.
Since it would be irresponsible to engage in baseless speculation about whether these facts are independent coincidences, I'll leave it up to you to come to the conclusion that Serena totally ditched the tournament to her inexplicably famous friend get hitched.
"Now that I have time I probably will," Serena said after the match when asked whether she'd attend the wedding. "I hadn't thought about it," she said in a manner as convincing as her apology after yelling at that chair umpire.
The biggest surprise was that Serena didn't do this earlier. She's won her last two tournaments and 12 matches in the past 23 days. That's a lot for anyone coming off a serious injury that sidelined her for almost a year. It has to be especially taxing for a player like Serena whose schedule over the past few seasons has been less than strenuous. Plus, even if she had stubbed her toe, there's no reason to risk further injury to her feet.
She accomplished what she wanted out of the U.S. Open Series. She got plenty of court time, found her serve, reasserted her dominance in the sport and rose 138 spots in the rankings to assure a seed at the U.S. Open. When the mission is to win Grand Slams, putting aside a smaller tournament for the larger goal is a necessary evil, no matter what the real excuse may be.
