UPDATE: According to the USTA, del Potro is already back to hitting and will attempt to play in the U.S. Open.
The defending Open champion told organizers of the Thailand Open that he will play in the indoor event, which begins Sept. 24 in Bangkok. The statement also said it will be his first event since the Australian Open, leading to the logical conclusion that Delpo won't be in New York next month to defend his title.
Del Potro has been sidelined since the Australian Open with a wrist injury. He told fans on his Twitter account that his doctor has been happy with his progress and thinks it may be time to pick up a racket again.
He could face stiff competition in his return. Rafael Nadal has also announced he'll play in Thailand.
The world No. 7 was recently in the news after purchasing a street in his hometown of Tandil. Reports say Del Potro bought the roads for $50,000 in an attempt to keep tourists off two new pieces of property, presumably so they don't interrupt him cooking with a shovel.
