Unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman upset top-seeded David Goffin 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 to reach the European Open final on Saturday. Schwartzman will need to produce another upset in the final against third-seeded Richard Gasquet, who earlier staged an impressive comeback to beat Britain's Kyle Edmund 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Schwartzman dropped serve twice in the first set but broke Goffin for the third time to clinch it.
Monica Niculescu ended her two-year wait for a third WTA singles title by brushing aside top seed Petra Kvitova in the Luxembourg Open final. The unseeded Niculescu had not claimed a singles title since she was crowned Guangzhou Open champion in September 2014, but was not to be denied on Saturday. Niculescu, ranked 51 in the world, pressed home her advantage in the second as an out-of-sorts Kvitova fell to pieces, coughing up far too many errors as she was soundly beaten.
By Martyn Herman LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Johanna Konta faces an anxious 24-hour wait before discovering whether she will make her debut at the WTA Finals in Singapore. Konta, who has rocketed up the rankings this year, attended the draw ceremony for the showpiece season-ender on Friday having reached number eight on the WTA's Road to Singapore list. Thousands of miles away at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, however, Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova was battling to sneak ahead of her and grab the final place in the eight-player tournament that starts with round-robin action on Sunday.
