Happy ending in sight as fortune favours Jankovic

DOHA, Oct 30 (Reuters) - One of the toughest years of her career could still have a golden finale for Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic who now stands just two victories away from winning the WTA Championships and a $1.5 million jackpot.

The 24-year-old appeared ready to head for the airport on Tuesday when she turned in a limp performance in her opening group match against Victoria Azarenka of Belarus after which Jankovic gloomily said she was a shadow of her former self.

After getting lucky on Wednesday when Russian Dinara Safina withdrew early in their match with a back injury, the cards fell nicely in her favour again on Friday.

Danish opponent Caroline Wozniacki was clearly suffering physically after her exploits of the previous day when she beat Vera Zvonareva in a near three-hour battle that left her barely able to walk at the end after being seized with cramp.

Jankovic took full advantage, producing some aggressive tennis from the baseline and at the net to run out a 6-2 6-2 winner and reach the semi-finals of the Championships for the second consecutive year.

JANKOVIC OPTIMISTIC

This after her very participation in the elite eight-player field was in doubt right up until the 11th hour as she battled for ranking points last week in Moscow.

“I was really disappointed after my first loss (to Azarenka) and I was a little bit harsh on myself because my tennis was really awful and I was frustrated,” Jankovic told reporters.

“But the good thing about this competition is not how you begin, it’s how you end it. I just regrouped and kept myself positive and optimistic and here I am, I’m in the semis.”

Whatever happens in the next two days, Jankovic said the past 12 months have given her a more balanced perspective.

“It was a tough year overall. Many things have happened on and off the court. I had a lot of injuries, some personal problems, a death in my family,” she said.

“It’s really hard sometimes to be focused on tennis and to only think about the game. And after those things happen, you realise that tennis is just a sport, and you don’t need to take it so seriously. I try to go with a smile on my face.

“So I’m really happy after all that I was able to make it to the Championships here, to such a prestigious event, and that I gave myself an opportunity to go far in this tournament and to play with the best players in the world.”

To me, just me mind you; Venus did not play well. But then she seems to just struggle through. But she is still Queen Vee. And she did pull it off. I closed my eye most of the match, as I know that if Jelena is able to get every thing back in play and she can get Vee into a rally, Jelena will usually win the rally. I want Vee to get through this next three matches and go home and REST. (3) the singles, and two doubles. Anyway, I am all for Queen Vee!!

Yeah if Venus don't play well tomorrow she could easily use because Jankovic doesn't go for much. Venus style of play would hurt her against a counter puncher like Jankovic if she is off. However, because it is a semi-final I expect to see Venus focused because she is almost to the final and because her rivalry with Serena.

I know, Venus didn't run and retrieve the way she normally does, and when she served, she 'tested' that knee first.........sigh.........but she could paint the lines and volley enough to push Jankovic and Serena around a lot.

Yeah Serena's serve has been real solid I don't see her losing unless something is wrong with her.

Sorry guys Venus is a great player and all, but she can't beat Serena when it really counts. Almost everytime she's tried, she's failed! Sure she's beaten her at smaller events before and once at Wimbledon last year, but usually in the finals of a big tournament, Serena will win 9 times out of ten. Physically and technically, their skills are about the same, but Serena has proven to be mentally tougher time and time again. Venus should have beaten Serena the other day. She actually served for the match and still couldn't do it and the only reason she's still alive is because of a technicality (Kusnetsova lost). It's just like last year at the US Open when Venus served for BOTH sets and was leading in BOTH tiebreaks. Serena came back everytime and won the match. Venus can outplay Serena for about a set and a half and still end up loosing. Since 2002, the only time Venus wins in this head-to-head is when Serena is either injured (usually her knee) or when she completely looses control of her emotions.

Both of you please pray for the Williamses to win..........I want them both to win their semis, so much!..........If Venus had won Wimbledon, I would be pulling for Serena, but now I want Venus to take it all.............either way it is bittersweet for me............I am so happy Venus made it through in spite her first 2 tough losses.

ok, ok. I know that you all expect Serena to win. And I will give you props if she does; but, I am pulling for Queen Vee. I think she will have a little gas left in her and when she makes it through the final and will go all out to bring that trophy home. It will be her first at the end of the year. Don't get mad, the money will all be in the family. Hail Queen Vee!!!!

ANYONE for tennis?...As I've suggested in free-online verse, females should play TABLE tennis, which puts far less stress on the racket/bat arm.
