Roddick blasts tour calendar but reluctant to strike

SHANGHAI, Oct 12 (Reuters) - An exasperated Andy Roddick said the ATP men’s tour must give players more time to rest during the season or risk shortening the careers of the “stars” of the sport.

The world number six lost to qualifier Lukasz Kubot in the first match of his title defence at the China Open last week and said then that the top players were playing too much tennis.

He renewed his attack at the Shanghai Masters on Monday while admitting the ultimate negotiating tool, a players’ strike, was unlikely.

“I think it’s ridiculous to think that you have a professional sport that doesn’t have a legitimate off season to rest, get healthy, and then train,” the 27-year-old told reporters at his 16th tournament of the season.

World number one Roger Federer pulled out of Shanghai citing fatigue, while number three Andy Murray blamed a wrist injury for his absence from the inaugural $3.24 million tournament.

“I don’t think that’s all of one big coincidence, and I just hope that the shortsightedness doesn’t affect the length of careers,” he said. “I think in tennis you definitely want your stars around as long as possible.”

The top 30 men’s players are obliged to play the four two-week grand slam events and eight of the nine Masters Series tournaments.

In addition, their best four results in ATP 500 events and best two in lower level tournaments count towards their rankings, effectively meaning they must play at least 18 a year.

“We’ve been talking about this forever, and now we get slapped with mandatory tournaments,” said the 2003 U.S. Open champion.

“We don’t really have a whole lot of choices in the matter, which I don’t think is the right way to go about it.”

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

Roddick thought the men could learn from the WTA women’s tour, which reorganised its calendar for this season and reduced the number of mandatory events from 13 to 10.

The American expressed his frustration that the people with the power to change things were often the same people who ran the tournaments, which was “a little bit of a conflict of interest”.

The players were unlikely to boycott an event, however, he said.

“I don’t think any of us wants to (strike), because even more so than feeling a responsibility to the powers that be in tennis, we feel a responsibility to the fans,” he said.

“We don’t want to alienate our fans. It’s a tough situation, and that’s why I think that we’ve put up with it as long as we have.”

Spain’s Rafa Nadal agreed with the American that the playing year was too long.

“It’s impossible to play from January 1 to December 5, no sport can do it,” said the world number two. “I don’t know what the solution is, but it must be changed and soon.”

Roddick, the fourth seed here, plays Stanislas Wawrinka in his opening match in Shanghai after the Swiss beat Pole Kubot in the first round on Monday.

What Andy Roddick was doing after his exit from the American Open? How many matches he played before tasting one more defeat in Beijing?

Post # 3 alice e: You are absolutely right!! Brilliant comments indeed! And now, with Nadal fading, it is just about one guy - the best ever - Roger Federer. I expect him to add another couple of majors in 2010, which would take him to 17. He may well end up close to 20 including one in his last Wimbledon in 2012!!! Would appreciate your (and Arunn's) thoughts on this ... Thanks!

only lthe strong survive. those who can take the pressure both mentally and physically. I thought Andy was supposed to be in the best shape of his life! Maybe he isn't hungry enough to want to play as many tournaments as he can. He should cite and ínjury' so he can drop out of a tourney. Spend some quality time with that wifey of his. Tennis careers are short lived, so make the most of it while you can. A stike would do unlimited damage to the sport. So don't even mention that word. Andy, you are young and strong let your racquet talk for you. Maybe you will get lucky and RF, Rafa, Novak, Murray and Del Portro will all have injuries at one time and you might have a chance to win.

the ATP is about 2 people really:Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal;the others like Novak Djokovic,Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro are sideshow
Djokovic wins the Aussie due to Federer's mono

Del Potro win the USO when Federer doesn't serve well and goes on to lose to a NOBODY!

Murray has done nothing but Masters Series and can't win slams no matter how arrogant he is and no matter how the British press hypes him!

Murray was ready to receive the 2009 Aussie Open even before he left Scotland and he lost in the 4th round to Ferdasco
he does deep in Monte Carlo due to a weak draw;and folks start saying he is a contender for Roland Garros;he goes on to lose to Gonzalez who is not that great on clay in the Quarters!
he is favorite even ahead of Federer, according to the press and he loses to Roddick in the semis partly due to a rigged draw
he is favorite again ahead of Federer in the media and he loses to Cilic in the 4th round at the USO!

Well said! alice e : Great comment & very well put! And to think of it, Roger has done this for the last 6 years and is going to end another year as WORLD # 1 (for the 5th time!!). Your point about Nadal is awesome - he went after every single tournament including Barcelona, which he could have avoided, and then ran out of gas when it mattered!!! Go Roger! You are the best ever!!!

SHUT UP Roddick just SHUT IT !

Unlike Roger Federer who has reasons to feel fatigued YOU have NONE

Federer has made ALL 4 slam FINALS and has won 2 out of 4.The other 2 lost finals;went 5 sets!

he was in the latter stages of Monte Carlo,Rome and Montreal,Miami,Indian Wells and won Madrid,Cincy because he is an ALL-SURFACE player.

he has reasons to feel fatigued because he spent 3 weeks in a hospital with his wife and his twin daughters

Federer won his Davis Cup matches against a bunch of clay court specialists Italians and you pulled out against Croatia because it was on clay, citing "injury"

the day you make ALL 4 slam FINALS which will NEVER happen and go deep in ALL the Masters Series on ALL 4 surfaces which will never happen with 2 kids with you then you can yap until then shut the @#$%k up

as for Nadal, you have YOURSELF to blame for this.YOU chose your own schedule and YOU chose to run after ranking points and $ by playing EVERY Masters Series and meaningless tournaments on hard courts and clay all over Europe until your own knees said TOO DAMN MUCH without giving your body a rest. You pulled out of Wimbledon because of YOU and you got the ab strain because of YOU!
