Del Potro stuns Nadal to make first slam final

*Del Potro reaches first grand slam final

*Worst grand slam defeat of Nadal’s career

*’Best moment’ of Del Potro’s life

(adds quotes, detail)

By Simon Cambers

NEW YORK, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro bludgeoned Rafael Nadal 6-2 6-2 6-2 at the U.S. Open on Sunday to reach his first grand-slam final.

The sixth seed overpowered the Spaniard in two hours, 20 minutes of outstanding hitting to set up a final against either five-times champion Roger Federer or fourth seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

“It’s very difficult for me to speak at this moment. This is my favourite tournament and I can’t believe this moment,” a beaming Del Potro said in a courtside interview.

“I am very close to my dream, to win this tournament. I hope I can do it. I am very happy to be here. Tomorrow I will fight until the final point, if I win or lose, I think this is the best moment of my life.”

Nadal went into the match struggling with a right abdominal injury and his service speed was clearly down, allowing Del Potro to be aggressive on his returns.

The first set was a story of missed opportunities as Nadal squandered three break point chances, while the Argentine broke twice, in the fourth and eighth games.

The pattern was repeated in the second set and though Nadal continued to fight in the third, Del Potro was too strong and cruised to a comprehensive victory.

The scoreline represented the heaviest grand slam defeat of Nadal’s career.

“It was a little bit unlucky year for me,” Nadal said. “I started the year playing really well but that’s sport.

“In Cincinnati (last month) and here, I had a problem with the right abdominal and it was difficult for me to serve.

“But he is playing very well and I am very happy for him.”

Rafa's style of play is the ideal foil to Federer's style.
In their prime, playing at 100%, Nadal beats Federer more often.

Said it once and I'll say it again... other than in 2008, Nadal was a one trick pony. Every tennis fan knows this. Saying otherwise is just ignorant.

Just glad Raffy didn't call in sick again like he did at Wimby...

I watched Nadal during his practice for 2 hours and observed that he had not pick his b*** as when he played in a match. I thought it might be a mannerism but I think it's a nerve.

Whats up with all the hating guys? Both are freaken good! Roger is the GOAT and this is coming from a Nadal fan. And even Nadal says that! so its not like Nadal thinks he is better! Now 08 was Nadals year, but before that it was Rogers ecxept for The French Open. Now i think you should think about this, at Nadals age, he has way more GS then Roger did! and This is with Roger on the tour! Overall i think Nadal is more fun to watch since he is running like crazy and playing like he was broke. I think Nadal will accomplish a lot at his young career, way more than Roger did at the same age. But in the future NO ONE KNOWS if his game will slow down hopefully not since Murry the NOT GREAT will be left.

    VAMOS RAFA!

heila a and G to call tennis boring means you know nothing about tennis, play tennis, nor have watched it with actual thought. HAving to fist-pump doesnt mean its exciting. Nadal doesnt make amazing shots, he is a ballboy runner who runs side to side and play 10 feet behind the baseline. Fed makes shots no one can make in the game and is interesting how he approaches every game and every match he is in. If you think tennis is boring without nadal, what was tennis for the past 100 years huh? sh!t?

He picks his @#$% because he has problems, dont know whether its a rash or "men" inside but wont get into that. He isnt no gentleman as the definition of that is someone of calm, decisive actions without showboating or emtion outpouring their faces. Nadal does the total opposite of that. Sorry but its unappopriate to pick your @#$% infront of 10000 people.

BigBenBull hwo do you know he isnt using HGH or steriods hmm? you got proof for that? i do. Its called muscle loss/gain in unprecidented ammounts in shorts periods of time. Broadcasters wont say this or comment on it because they are being paid to be virgin to the game and not spoil it like how it was done to baseball. You look at anytime of three month periods or even one month periods and you can see what loss/gain he has is not explained by training. Dont QQ and say its natural it isnt, you dont know jack about the human body. To have that done causes responces which destroy the body. Wanna know if this hapened to nadal? it has. They purposly jack him up for french open and wimboldon. This year they started early with the aussi open and it showed. Nadal lost in barcelona and france to QQ his way back to us open. His cycle was ruined and his body took a toll for it.

You all want nadal to win because you watched tennis from 2002-2007 knowing fed was going to win and EVERYONE KNEW THAT. you all young peole think nadal is the greatest now because he represents anti-establishment which fed has established. You have no logic behind your reasons, no valid arguement nor any statistic to prove nadal is clearly better overall then fed in the game of tennis and not result.

BTW heres a statistic you nadal fands cant achieve.... fed is 126W-0L against players outside the top 10. Dont know nadals but he has around 16 or so. So tell me whos more consistant from that hmm

HMM... ponder and dont QQ because if you do you show your a low person. Bring a valid point to the table and ill discuss.

Ya its true when NADAL is not around or eliminated early the tournament is boring, its seems his absence makes tennis uncolorful especially SLAMS tournament, and as for me I experienced that many times I prefer not to watch anymore if NADAL is out. Like here in ROLAND GARROS when he was beaten by SODERLING I did not watch anymore, and the court central is not full because NADAL was not there he is a croudbreaker tickets soldout. This is only my observation since 2005 he started playing in Roland Garros. THANK YOU FOLKS

why do call it ass picking? Nadal just adjust his short. that's it. if you don't like . simply don't watch his match. He is a true gentlemen. without nadal tennis is boring. I admit federer is the best, but his tennis is boring and predictable. no excitement , no energy in federer's game.

I really thought that tennis fans had more class than foot ball and basketball fans but these comments are starting to get as shameless, nasty, and off-topic as those for the aforementioned sports' articles.

Men's tennis would be utterly boring if Nadal were not around. He has been gracious and a sportsman after every win and loss, even to the point of apologizing to Federer for beating him. Without his presence in the field, Wimbledon was hardly worth watching this year. You have to admit that he makes the game much more interesting and compelling to watch. Anyone think that Federer wants to see Nadal at the other end of the court in the finals?

Nadal is truly an amazing player! It's good to see him in top form after a long recuperation from injury.. I also agree with you Big Ben; Nadal is a humble player and he doesn't cry when he loses, he takes it as a learning experience whenever the match doesn't turn out the way he'd want to. Go, Nadal!
