* Djokovic beats world number one for third time this year

* Federer misses out on fourth successive hometown title (Adds quotes)

By Brian Homewood

BASEL, Nov 8 (Reuters) - World number one Roger Federer missed out on a fourth successive Swiss Indoors title when he lost to third-ranked Novak Djokovic in the final of his hometown tournament on Sunday.

The Serbian won 6-4 4-6 6-2 to record his third win over Federer in five meetings this year and notch his fourth ATP title of the year after winning in Beijing, Belgrade and Dubai.

The Swiss, who was once a ball boy at the tournament, was returning after a six-week mini-break following his U.S. Open final defeat to Juan Martin del Potro.

Federer, who had not previously dropped a set or lost a service game in the tournament, had his serve broken four times as he lost a final for the third time this year following defeats at the Australian and U.S. Open.

The match featured an extraordinary 10th game in the first set where Federer saved six set points and Djokovic five break points before the Serbian wrapped up the set at the seventh attempt.

“I tried to stop him from taking control of the match because when he does, he’s the best in the world and he can end the match very quickly,” Djokovic told reporters.

“I tried to be patient, have good tactics and put pressure on him and make him play an extra shot.”

Federer said: “No doubt, it’s disappointing to lose in the final at home.”

“I missed plenty of opportunities, I was always down in the score. Each time I swung the momentum my way, I got broken again. If I had played a bit better on the attack, then it could have made a difference. It was a close match.”

MISPLACED PASS

Both players rattled off their first four service games easily before Federer was broken in the ninth.

The 10th game took 24 minutes as both players made mistakes at crucial moments.

Federer sent a flurry of shots into the net while Djokovic repeatedly overhit his drives when presented with the chance to wrap up the set.

Federer eventually obliged for him with a misplaced pass as he faced set point for the seventh time.

The Swiss started the second set by having his serve broken again before enjoying his best spell of the match.

He broke back in the fourth game with an exquisite drop shot from the baseline, which brought the house down, and again in the 10th to wrap up the second set, helped by a double fault from Djokovic.

Federer lost serve twice in a row at the start of the third set and frittered away his last chance when he squandered three break points in succession in the sixth game.

Djokovic finished off the match at the first attempt when Federer sent an attempted drive high into the air.

Roger Fegerer is the greatest among all the tennis champions. Once he went down to No.2 seat.
Unbelievable, he has been able to get back No.1 seat again.
Whenever we think about tennis, the name Roger automatically comes into our minds. He lost to Djokovic and Podro at the finals. Still walking tall.
Thanks a lot to him for not being retired. Sure, all the fans love to see him playing beautifully at the courts.
Fantastic star in tennis history. Roger Federer of Switzerland !

Fed really had a string of LUCK in 2003-2006 when he won the bulk of his slams beating no names - there were just few outstanding players to compete. Now we have a new crop of good players and he's fading away...Sampras was the best and most exciting (and still is!)...

did the serena verdict come out yet?
Saw federer play and his backhand looked awful it was everywhere it let him down; I've always know that this is his real weakness when players find out they will take advantage. he runs around his backhand to prefer the forehand if allowed to run around his backhand he will crush you.
also federers age is not to be playing long matches against really young guys he doesn't have the stamina can't play as much/not willing to play as much withdrew from japan; because not spring chicken anymore will affect his ranking in the future.

I can see Fed losing some best of three matches every now and then.. that's just normal considering his age and the improvement of his younger opponents.. What shocks me are his losses at big time best-of-five matches..Them being so far and few in between is a testament to how great and gifted this player truly is.. considering how many straight grand slam semis and finals he's in..and with the tremendous physicality and athleticism in today's modern game, to dominate players for a long period of time, how can we ever compare him to players of a bygone era in tennis where the talent and depth in the men's game isn't the same.. no disrespect to past tennis champions, of course..

I like the way Fed played. His cross-court shots are sharp and most of the time surprising. His loss this time is regrettable! He's still very alert and fast. He could play well for 3 more years at least!

@hugeheadunderhugo who wrote "...let us be fair. Roger is a good player with a long streak of luck, but let us be realistic ...". Long streak of LUCK? Are you serious? Here's reaslistic for you - you're pathetic and obviously have no knowledge of tennis!
@goFed, great post. I agree with you 100%. Thanks.

I think those who said Roger didn't praise other players is due to lack of information. Yahoo. rarely post the complete info about players comments. Citing from BBC, Federer stated clearly that Djok played tough and well.
"I thought I missed plenty of opportunities. I'm not looking for excuses. He played tough and he played well when he had to, and saved a ton of break points that were crucial."
    link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/8349507.stm

As to Federer passing his prime, it seems true. While let's don't carry away with a Swiss indoor. Only two months ago, Djok said he got no chance against Fed when Fed is on. That's still true even today. Home court has some advantage maybe, but far from other sports. So it's not that significant for Fed to loose at home. If home court is regarded as an factor, then Fed to way too much better than Sampras, since all his important achievement are away from home.

I don't think it's reasonable to include Laval in the GOAT discussion. There were no long range commercial flight available during 60's. Rarely players, other than Australians returned home, took long trip to Australia during Christmas season. That's when Aussi Open used to be played till 1987. Even Borg only attend once in his full career, so Aussi Open was a national tournament in most cases at those days. The only three worthy candidates are Fed, Sampras and Borg.

Fed is the best of all time due to his complete game, movement and intelligence. Nadal is not in the same category as Fed and I don't think he will be. However, he may has the best mental toughness and stamina in history.

Federer is already 28 years old. In ,Federer the heyday of wonderful Federeris 2004~2006.

And, the quality of the play that had completely become in a slump due to the sickness and injury in 2008 fell into Federer, too.

Roger.. now is really ..the reign over the king

Roger, you have won many times but sometimes you lose. You are still number 1 and we admire you for staying that long in the position. Win some more until you retire. Keep on breaking records. A defeat in Basel does not mean the end of your career. Don't be disheartened.

Congrats Novak! You deserve it. Prepare well as Andy Murray is back!

I am a Federer supporter and fan, but isn't this natural progression for an athelete as they age. You expect the younger guys to eventually start winning.

I look for Federer to win 3 - 4 tournaments a year (1 GS/yr) for the next 3 years and I will be happy. He has played 12 tournaments this year and still has more points than everyone else. He made all 4 GS final and 2 Master Series final. He has had another good year, and as long as he loses only to Nadal, Murray, Djokovic and Del Potro, I think he has had a great tournament. Those guys are 4+ years younger and in their prime or just getting there. Roger can still compete with them and I am satisfied with that. For all those who compare Roger of 3 - 4 years ago to today, ofcourse he is not going to be the same.

He will still be a threat at the GS, since he will have a day off between matches. The US Open will be tough with the back to back SF and Final. His game is so complete in all facets that the lower ranked players will find it hard to beat him at the early rounds of the GS. I also don't expect him to be in all the 4 GS finals next year.

Having played the final this week in Basel, I will be surprised if he wins Paris. I think he has a better shot at winning the year end championship especially if he can get the day off before the SF.

I am not calling for Federer to retire, but I am also realistic. I have watched tennis for over 30 years and seen some of the all time greats come and go. Next year Roger will be a top 5 player although I hope he can retain his #1 ranking until Wimbledon. I am glad that I watched him play in his prime and thank him for all the great memories and excellent tennis. It is time for the younger group to shine and I wonder who will get on top - Nadal, Murray, Djokovic, Del Potro, Cilic, Tsonga and Soderling are all capable of winning but none of them will dominate. It will make an interesting race for next year, ofcourse Federer will be in the mix.

I also hope that Roger continues to be healthy, and manages his body well.

    Dear fans,
So it is to acknowledge that the defeat of Federer is a big consolation for Nadal because this shows losing is normal to even the top player!

Returning back to court this week what we're waiting for Nadal is his spectacular counter attack passing shots!

Of course we love to see Nadal win but his appearance on court is more important to us!

Go on Nadal ! Just play tennis as a game you love!

Federer still the best in the world today....He is No. 1 rank in the world....He got a lot of grandslam champion...He still capable of winning more.....Most of the tennis players defeated in their own backyard so what is wrong with that?......3 Championship trophies in his own country are not bad......It is absolutely incredible......So for me, Federer still the best teenis player in this era.......Long live Fedex.

people, please let us be fair. Roger is a good player with a long streak of luck, but let us be realistic Novak can beat him anytime in any surface given the chance. Everyone fades, and its Federer time whether he likes it or not tennis will retire him and younger players will beat him in his game. Let us give due credit to Djokovic, he definitley and absolutely beaten Roger fair and square and federer has no reason to complain and cry...again. good day people.
