Serena pulls out of Fed Cup final

  • Print

DOHA, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Serena Williams has withdrawn from U.S. Fed Cup team for next week’s final against Italy in Calabria, the USTA said on Saturday.

No reason for her withdrawal was given in the statement which said Vania King woulld take her place.

Serena, who will reclaim the top ranking on Monday, has not played for the U.S. in the Fed Cup since 2007.

The U.S. are trying to win the competition for the first time since 2000 but Serena’s withdrawal will severely weaken their chances against a strong Italy side.

King will join teenager Melanie Oudin, a quarter-finalist at the U.S. Open last month, doubles specialist Liezel Huber and Alexa Glatch.

Williams will take on Caroline Wozniacki later on Saturday in the semi-finals of the WTA Championships.

I agree totally with Bajancreme We do this for a lot of sports. It is crazy how we judge people. Yes, im guilty of it too. In reality Only God can judge us or whatever religion you may claim. I have put my life on the line for 18+yrs for America and when im not wearing my uniform, some people judge me tooooo.

I would like to clarify a couple of things for you Delores B. First of all I am not an American so, I don't wish to represent the United States in any event.

Secondly, skank? what a witty retort. I do not call people names when I have never met them. If this is how you wish to represent yourself then so be it.

Thirdly, if you read my post correctly, you will see that I am not a fan of anyone who is self serving and that includes whites as well as Afro-Americans.

Finally, I find it interesting that you choose the anonymity of the internet to espouse your verbal tirades. If you are ever in Canada please drop me a line so that we can meet face to face so you can repeat your ignorant classless remarks to my face. If you actually have the parts to do that then maybe I will actually place some merit in them.

I used to be upset with Venus and Serena when they did not play fed cup. Now I am not. Actually I am glad that they are not playing. The people in the USA do not rally behind then like the other countries do for their players. At one US Open Venus was playing against Mauresmo and the crowd was cheering for the French Woman. So bad martine worte about it. So when the US wants to win a tournament now the Williams sisters are needed??. Why not give Mauresmo, Sharpova, Clijsters, Vaidisova, the people they support and cheer for over the Williams Sisters, US Citizenship so that they can play for the USA. I would not be hurting myself/my body to play for a country that only recognizes my potential when it benefits them.

I still say the nation, and the whole tennis world, loved Venus and Serena when they were just coming into recognition. We loved those girls and were excited and very happy for them.

This sucks but I saw it coming from a mile away. Well, two days away actually. I saw a picture from a doubles match with the sisters the other day and one look at the heavy wrapping on her leg told me "no Fed Cup." It's too bad, I wanted to see Serena finally represent the US again, but I get it. She's trying to play a fuller schedule than ever before so wear and tear is bound to happen. Oh well, hopefully next year will be better.

They are afraid of the Williams sisters because they have been so good for the past fifteen years. Injuried or not they are still playing. They cheated Serena out of the USO with their bull @@$#chit foot fault. They finally got exposed to the point they really don't know what to do. They cannot suspend her now, because if they do, they will come off looking racist, and vendictive, and evil. Since they put their foot in their mouth, which is so funny they don't know what to do at this point except give her a fine and move on to 2010 calendar year. I hope they have learned their lesson. But then again, when it comes to the sister they will never learn.

The only self-absorbed and self centered bi###ch I see crawing around on this board is you. Serena won her championship trophy and eight hours later you are still talking about her. Isn't that somethng? Obviously, she must be very important or else you wouldn't be talkig about her. People like you are afraid because she and her sister a powerful beyound measure. It is their light and not darkness that frightens people like you. Don't you see when she play, she plays with confidence, determination and certaintity, and you hate that she is better than all the other players. Serena don't have to play in the Fed Cup if she does not no twant to. She is tired ,injuried and needs to go home and rest for 2010. JOANNE K, since you have such a big mouth why don't you go and play in the Fed Cup. Afterall this is your this country too skank!

LOL the problem with analyzing Black peoples actions is in the statement. First of all you have no business judging anyone and when you judge them by their race it never ends up good. You people are in denial of why you dislike Serena and Carol is just calling several of you out and letting you see how it feels. The whole time the final was being played today Pam Shriver kept talking about when they would retire from the sport. She even said Venus may be over the hill. She was talking about their age but in the same breath was talking about Clijster's and Henin's comeback. They all are about the same age and you talk about two players retiring because of their age but welcome back two other players just as old. They are feeling very uncomfortable about the Williams sisters assault on the record books. If they play doubles as long as Martina did then they will pass her up in doubles titles. Billy Jeank King retired at 38 and Martina was almost 50 before she hung the racket.

Carol post number 27 why do blacks always scream racism whenever their actions are analyzed? If tennis is a colonnial white skinhead activity then why do the Williams sisters want to participate? The only racism that exist is in your little pea mind. All anyone need do is look at any professional sport and you will find that there is no shortage of overpaid badly behaved black athletes, they are on a true par with the overpaid, badly behaved white athletes. So enough already with your racist rants. Serena is a miserable, self centred and self absorbed excuse for a human being regardless of her skin color.

Just as she should.... fabulous, fabulous, F@KKING FABULOUSSSS!!! Why should any of the Williams sisters support a nasty KKK Klansman colonial sport that incessantly discredits any other race that is not white? hahahahaaaa..... i couldnt agree more with the Williams sisters... money talks and bullsh!t walks..... furthermore they never have to worry about the "others" as they are icons to their own race... the world over.... am sure that must hurt!

Great post, Timolin!! I 100% agree! The Williams have never garnered the love and support that Lindsay or even the druggie shoplifter, Capriati, have received. Why, because they have a bad attitude? In light of everything they've had to endure, I think their attitudes have been exemplary. I know I might have snapped years ago had I been in their shoes.
I think it's long past time that the sisters take their racquets and balls and go on tour doing exhibitions around the world. It seems they're very loved in Europe and Asia. They'll make as much money as they make now per year - if not more- and play as little and as much as they like. Now that would be the truly selfish thing to do!
I won't go so far as to say racism is involved, but I'll say that the tennis world has made it clear that the Williams girls, despite being as American as it gets, are still outsiders in a sport where they've been the #1 and #2 ranked American women for many years now. It's a shame.

Post 21---I respectfully disagree about Serena and Venus fighting racism from day #1. I remember being so excited and supportive of the sisters when they were just coming into recognition. It was wonderful to see them. I think most Americans and tennis players everywhere were supportive. Venus and Serena were like excited little girls. I admired their father for his effort and insight and hardwork. I remember being in a restaurant in Minot, ND watching Venus struggle in a good match. I kept leaping from my chair to encourage her. The nation loved those two girls.

Love serena and venus however there is no good reason to pull out of fed cup this late in the game. i guess she is satisfied with the year end #1 ranking which is well deserved. however to hurt the us chances in fed cup is also a big mistake especially since everyone seems to look for reasons to put her down.

    # 21 please get rid of that chip on your shoulder before you start ranting.

the Williams sisters will do nothing to please the haters ? Well representing your country just once in 2 years would be a fine start wouldn't it instead of saying yes i'll play and thenw ithdrawing while you are in the middle of a torunament you are sailing through ?

as for introducing us to fashion in tennis , please do w aiki or google search on "Suzanne Lenglen " (1926) Ted Tinling (1950-90) Andre Agassi

unless of course you meant that they introduced us to fashion street trash a la compton ?

Nothing Venus and Serena Williams do will please the haters. They are two of the best players ever and there is stil more for them to accomplish. Remember, they introduced us to power tennis and "fashion" tennis for that matter. Everyone is trying to imitate them in terms of play and power, including Sharapova, Dementieva, Kutnesova, and others.

The U.S. Open was an atrocity and obviously motivated by racism. Even one of the commentators said it, in all of tennis history I have never seen the fans root against the home team i.e.Venus and Serena like they did for Kim Clijsters. These young ladies have been suffering at the hands of racism from day 1 and nothing has changed 10 years later; s evidence by these ongoing racists comments made by the folks above. I admire their strength, resilience, and character for surely they have represented this country well. If it were not for them, where would American tennis be?
