US Open semifinalist Wickmayer banned for 1 year

BRUSSELS (AP)—U.S. Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer was suspended for one year by a Belgian anti-doping tribunal Thursday, accused of failing to report her whereabouts to drug-testing officials three times.

The Flemish regional tribunal called the punishment “reasonable.” Tribunal spokesman Koen Uman said the suspension takes immediate effect, but Wickmayer can appeal the decision.

The 18th-ranked Belgian has denied any wrongdoing and said on her Web site she planned to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. She is playing in a tournament in Bali this week.

Another Belgian tennis player, 2002 Wimbledon semifinalist Xavier Malisse, also was suspended by the tribunal for breaking the whereabouts rule.

Wickmayer’s suspension came as a surprise, because a prosecutor recommended she receive only a warning for missing three tests over 18 months. The tribunal said Wickmayer’s failure to live up to anti-doping rules required a suspension.

Wickmayer said last month she has had trouble with her password in the computerized system overseen by the World Anti-Doping Agency. She also said registered mail at her home could not be signed off on because she was traveling to WTA tournaments.

She has insisted she never missed an anti-doping test and her samples were always negative.

Wickmayer has enjoyed a breakthrough year, including her run to the semifinals at the U.S. Open after never before moving past the second round at a Grand Slam tournament. She won her first two tour titles at Estoril in May and at Linz last month.

The International Tennis Federation, which oversees the sport’s doping program, said Thursday it would not comment until receiving official notification of the suspension.

The U.S. Tennis Association—which oversees the U.S. Open—declined comment, as did the WTA and ATP.

Joao(59)... Eva did not bring up anything directly about race and I apologize to both you and her. I was trying to say that Eva brought Serena into the discussion when the thread is not about her. Eva has done this before much to her shame.

what the hell ever happened to fines? if she missed testing on a couple of occasions of the dozen or so they take during a year, why is suspension the minimum when people who test positive can get that amount? i just think it's horrible.

mmojo82 (55), you might want to look up "irrelevant" in a dictionary. Bratty behavior on the court a few months ago -- even if it were true -- has nothing whatever to do with this. Among other things, the timing of the suspension stinks. In the middle of a season-ending championship tournament in which she was progressing well? At the end of a major breakthrough season? Right. And after the prosecutor recommended a warning? Not for any suspicion of actual doping, but for a technical infraction? C'mon, mmojo, this affair smells to high heaven, and all the red herrings (e.g., blog 55) can't cover up the aroma.

If Yanina behaved as badly as you say, not threatening, but actually attacking a lines woman, makes Serera"s outburst seem not so bad . Why was"nt she suspended for such violent behaviour. Yanina knows the rules, she must follow them like evryone else on tour.

OMG I've found Yanina has been troublesome in the tour with her bad temper & annoyed ITF since Clearwater incident in this March. We can accept this sudden & severe ban against Yanina by linking with her unsportsmanlike conducts and lack of her sincerity to ITF.

    This is Clearwater incident truth.

According to eyewitness reports, she injured a lines-woman by smashing her with a tennis ball in an emotional outburst:

    www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=15112528&postcount=381

"Yanina displayed "Brat-Like" behavior throughout the tournament. Yanini had 5 code violations. She came close to hitting ball boys on 2 occasions. She launched balls over fences. For her final Code Violation and Disqualification Yanini hit a hard forehand to the back fence striking a defense-less 60 year old woman directly in the face causing a huge bruise. Yanini is dangerous and should seek anger management help."

I hope the ITF comes out with an official statement regarding the default. As Wickmayer was also in the doubles final, she voided the whole final day of play.

Read carefully. It doesn't mean she missed all her tests over 18 months. It means of all the tests she had over 18 months, she missed 3.

Dear Prime Minister or President of Belgium, may we request that you check the background and citizenship of the members of the Belgian Anti-Doping Tribunal, I personally believe they are not protecting the rights of their countrymen. They may be Aliens from outer space pretending to be Belgians! How barbaric!

A one year ban is too much. She did not take one. She just missed the tests. The Belgian Anti-Doping tribunal should be suspended for five years. They don't deserve to stay in the comfort of their chairs. Abusive officials who are taking advantage of their positons.

Wickmayer is being made an example AFTER the FACT!.............. The ITF,ATP, & WTA should be ashamed of themselves...............ONLY when they are being watched do they do the right thing...............and even then, they go over board to look as if they are doing `something'................to be so old and powerful, they sure are dumb and reactive instead of helpful and proactive..............after the 1st missed time, Wickmayer should have been locked down with a warning.............they are making Wickmayer look bad & alienating Belgian fans.

This is terrible, and I can just envision it. I've lived in Belgium the first half of my life and know that compared to other countries, the system makes so many mistakes, they deliver registered mail to the wrong addresses and so on.....and customer service is often rude. And it's also a typical Belgian attitude that if somebody is making their way up, some people will always try to bring you down. That's why I left Belgium for the USA 20 years ago! I feel so sorry for her and hope that she can win her appeal.

Eddie(46)...To add to your comment. There is something that doesn't "smell" right in regards to the communication situation.

This is 2009. Amongst e-mail, registered mail, carrier pidgeon, UPS, smoke signals, blackberries, facebook, outlook, twitter, myspace, prayer etc. how could there NOT be communication? Even Bin Laden can get messages.

Also, I'm sure they have an emergency contact number, her doctor's number, her coach, her trainer, her fellow players on the circuit.....SOMEBODY'S number.

    Do you feel me?

They could have even employed some of the stalkers on this blog. Damn.

"white guy", Serena, Justine have nothing to do with this issue.

Oh yeah, she the only women who has to travel for WTA tournament. Other woman tennis players don't travel at all for tournaments. I think she is an idiot.

It is a good thing that so many post in support this player's right to continue with her career.
I feel very badly for her and I want to know ALL of the details in regards to the offense and the decision.

I would think that such a decision would be a matter of public record, but perhaps the governing body involved does not have such an obligation.

If you are trying to compare/equate on court personal behavior issues with issues in regards to substance testing /abuse, you are somewhat off base in your ability to be logical; and I am putting this mildly out of respect so that you can re-examine your position with an open and not an angry state of mind.

Somebody should ban the ATP/WTA for coming up with this stupid anti-doping policy. Why should players have to tell people where they're going to be just so that they can be tested? Idiotic...

And she hasn't even tested positive. They're literally preventing tennis players from altering their schedules. They should probably do the same for the ATP & WTA brass... they're obviously on something.

am i the only one who smells a rat? with kim returning to play a full schedule next season and justine returning as well, perhaps they want to get rid of the upstart to focus all on those two? it just feels like a witchhunt to me. and i agree with the poster that said the belgian tribunal can be ridiculous. remember the crap they tried to do to kuznetsova? playing an exhibition match in liege with justine in the off-season then bringing it up the results (due to cold medicine, mind you) during the australian open in 2007,like they could even do anything about it. one year suspension just for not reporting? that's effin absurd. they allow richard gasquet to get away with coke on his lips, slap him on his wrist yet they want a year out of this young girl who's just coming up the ranks, just for not reporting one time.
