Dramatic US Open men’s final draws higher ratings

  • Print

NEW YORK (AP)—Television ratings are up from last year for the U.S. Open men’s final.

Juan Martin del Potro’s five-set upset of five-time defending champ Roger Federer on Monday drew a 2.3 rating and 5 share on CBS. That’s up 35 percent from the 1.7/4 for the 2008 final, which was also on a Monday because of rain delays.

Federer needed only three sets to defeat Andy Murray last year.

Ratings represent the percentage of all households with televisions, and shares represent the percentage of all homes with TVs in use at the time.

I am quite sure they explained the time constraint problem to Del Potro. The interviewer had no control over the time alotted. its control by someone else. its too bad tennis coverage is not like some other sports in which a delay does not limit full coverage and presentation.

James you are an idiot. Federer deserved the French open. Just because Delpotro got tired you say Fed got lucky. guess what? federer was tired too. And Federer had a tougher quarterfinal match, and he's 8 years older. So don't give me the tired excuse. I like Delpotro, but Federe will still go down as the greatest ever. 15 majors, and 6 major runnerups. Noone comes close.

Funny, I was so shocked that Enberg wouldn't let Del Potro address the crowd that I turned the station. Glad to hear he changed his mind. I've always like Enberg but could see his age starting to show. And what a bone head decision by the booth.

I'm a huge tennis follower and I agree that Dick Enberg needs to move on/be replaced. He's all Federer this and Federer that. When Del Potro was coming on in the last 2 sets Dick Enberg was silent and it was Johnny Mac who spoke up with praise. Gotta say that this was the first time Mary Carillo dissappointed me with her Serena bashing. It's obvious after the womens doubles match that we (the fans) are ready to MOVE ON. That goodness Del Potro had the sense to insist that he be able to speak in spanish. He was so moving that it brought me to tears.

Yes of course the tv ratings is upped from last year because murray is a proven choker... and del potro is not... i knew from the start that he can beat fed because if you watch the fo semi-finals del potro is up 2 sets to 1 and with a break in 5th set but he lost because hes tired federer is just lucky to escape with the title in fo if del potro isnt tired in the 5th set of that match del potro should be the fo champion

I completely agree with Donnie B from post#4, despite MeS's defense of the "Dick" in post#8. I've watched Enberg for over 2 decades, and a big part of why he is picked to do the post-championship emcee'ing is his supposed experience and ability to tip-toe through sometimes difficult and highly emotional situations. Sure the director in his ear should have been fired, but the "Dick" could have done a lot more than being rude and refusing the mike to Enano TWICE before they realized how idiotic they were in the booth. I now agree he's becoming senile, because in his previous forms he's been as smooth and collected as anyone. That was INEXCUSABLE, to insult Enano while millions of American Latinos, tennis fans, and millions of others were watching, with that hurry to get through the awards... .

As for those who gloated over Nadal's bad loss in the semifinal, like Angel in post#10, they seem to forget he's on a comeback, and made the SEMIS while crippled and unable to perform his usual agressive service game, similar to Roger was unable to do so, too, in order to close out the tiebreaks and 4th set. Obviously a lot of Roger fans- Nadal haters. I like Nadal, while totally respecting Roger's magic and uber consistency. I'm sure a lot of Nadal supporters believe if he hadn't gotten injured, he would have rolled after Aussie Open where he made Roger cry, but injuries are injuries, and they feel Roger didn't deserve those wins without Nadal there in gameshape. To play with a crippled or misfiring serve is impossible, as Roger found out himself. I can't remember how many ad court wide serves Roger kept putting into the net, to stay away from Enano's forehand... He jammed Enano through the first set, before Del Potro adjusted and started running around it. Then Roger himself couldn't adjust, kept dropping 1st serves....

Roger's still the court magician with all the skills, but without the 55 ace job he did in Wimbledon to knock off another great returner/power grinder in Andy, he can barely win in 5 sets. It's much harder for him, at 28, because he can't grow 5-6 inches taller or a wingspan 2 feet longer for coversage, like Enano Del Potro, Sam Querrey, Isner, Gonzales, AND has to play his best AND serve his best, against continuous 100-108mph forehands and ironman 30 stroke backhands.... Nadal and Djoko compensate with power and tenacity, while Murray uses returns and fitness, but the new crop is HERE. Gonna be good.

WOW!.. wait.. let me say that again, WOW!!!... This guy "Juan Martin Del Potro" will be a force to be reckoned with!. I saw somewhere they called him "The Giant, Giant Killer" and rightly so he is!..
What this Guy did to Nadal was ruthlessly brutal LOL this guy is Tennis's own "Bounty Hunter"!..
Nadal had nothing on this guy, yes Nadal was savaged by a barbarian! who posessed great skill and agility. As for Federer the tell tale signs were all over his face (fear!) you could read easily what he was thinking as Del Potro refused to lay down with Federer having 2 match points to put him away in the 4th set, Rodger has managed to keep Del Potro at bay up untill this recent meeting at the US Open, which resulted in these guys playing an awe inpsiring incredible match!, Del Potro gave Federer the "Rodger over and out" and Woah He's is only 20!.
The future of tennis looks seemingly promising for Him as he's going to be faster, more precise, increasingly agile as his appetite for success unfolds, and dare i say he could even match and beat Federers standing records! if his homework and psyhcological discipline are kept in check, heck Juan Martin could be this sports super action Hero LOL!.
Should Rodger think of retiring soon it would be a good call, he has been outstanding, theres so much intergity in his attitude and reinforces the noble status this sport rightfuly deserves through his modesty and awesome sportsmanship!, but he should be quick and consider Managing Del Potro if you saw in Rodgers face the rivalry and threat this guy has in his personal arsenal you would of seen that its not going to be so easy anymore to stay number one, you can he knows the potential of this youngman and the amount of success that is going to be due to him.
Suddenly the game of Tennis is once more exciting with a fresh element in view of its top raking seed, congratulations to Juan Martin Del Potro on his US Open victory what a truely Brilliant display of Modern Tennis!.

Those of you blaming Dick Enberg obviously have no television experience. The on-site reporter is fed directions from HIS BOSS, the director through an ear monitor. Enberg's JOB is to follow the directions of his director. Enberg is a legendary sportscaster who was obviously caught in a no-win situation. The director made the poor call to limit del Potro's speech. It was a bad call, but it was not Enberg's.

I agree-- the USTA is just a big ugly American corporate giant with no taste-- witness Del Potro not being able to speak, those awful TV ads for the Open, the even worse subway and signage ads here in NYC, those heinous "opening ceremonies" before the finals... the list goes on and on.... ugh. The other slams just have it over what the USTA does.

You're right Derek, Siew & Donnie,
That emcee was so rude and I pity JMdP who I think deserves much longer time to thank his supporters. Such discourtesy!
JMdP was so boyish that's why the MC treated him lowly. How about if he did same to Federer?

In Wimby, the runner and champion had the time of their lives to say everything on such a great day. In Roland Garros, remember the length of time Santoro was given to say goodbye, although it was not the day of the finals.

Maybe it's about time USTA better request the TV station to replace the ill mannered MC covering the event, henceforth. Madam Lisa Garbin, calling your attention.

I used to like Dick Enberg (about 20 years ago) but he has become a senile idiot. That was incredibly rude, and I'm glad JMD just grabbed the mic and said what he wanted to in Spanish anyway. I would be glad if Enberg and Mary Carillo got struck by lightning while in the broadcast booth.

I think it is Dick Enberg's classless action. Yes, the studio asked you to move fast, but you don't do that to the champion, who asked nicely and was going to speak in Spanish, which would be the most spoken language in US in 2020. (so I read)

Dick was a dick. He is too old for TV.

yay, maybe next year they will give the winner more than 10 seconds to give his victory speech before hurrying to AMerican Idol 10, Who Wants to be an Idiot, or whatever else is making them more money than tennis.
