Baghdatis wins Stockholm Open by beating Rochus

STOCKHOLM (AP)—Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus beat Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-1, 7-5 on Sunday, winning the Stockholm Open for his third career ATP Tour singles title just a week after learning he had gained the event’s main draw.

Baghdatis was playing a Challenger event in Tashkent when he got the news.

“They told me I was in, so I got on a plane right after the final (in Tashkent last week) and here I am,” he said. “I can’t say I was expecting this victory, but it feels great. I’m really happy.”

The 66th-ranked Cypriot advanced to the final against his friend and training partner with a walkover after top-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden withdrew because of an elbow injury.

In the first set at the Royal Tennis Hall, Baghdatis broke to lead 3-1 and then 5-1. It was closer than the score indicated with the fourth and six games going to deuce.

After trading breaks in the second set, Baghdatis broke for the third time to lead 6-5.

Baghdatis hit a backhand down the line to set up double match point at 40-15. He closed out the match with an ace.

“I want to blow a kiss to my mother and godmother, thank you for coming,” Baghdatis said. “Olivier played great, he’s given so much on the court.”

Baghdatis, the 2006 Australian Open runner-up, has been sidelined with numerous injuries the past two seasons. His highest ranking was eighth in August 2006, and his previous titles came in Beijing in 2006 and Zagreb in 2007.

“My goal is to stay healthy and try to play some consistent tennis,” he said.”

Rochus said his serve let him down.

“My serve didn’t work as well as it had done earlier in the week,” he said. “I had a few too many double-faults and had a lower first serve percentage, which cost me a lot. …

“I can’t complain with my week, but of course it’s always disappointing to lose a final.”

As I wrote on the other thread I was so happy for Marcos winning his third title, his first in a long time.
With injuries and an ill mother he's been side-lined so it's great to have him back in good form!
He deserves taking this trophy back to his homeland, Cyprus, the island Mark Anthony once gave to Cleopatra as a gift! Now that's my kind of gift :-)
I hope this is only a spring board for Marcos and he'll be victorious many more times!
    Great job!!!

The season is endless. Way too long. The result of this is all the injuries we've seen this year, especially in the fall. Only Federer has avoided injury and he's done it by limiting the number of tournaments he plays.

The other factor is hard courts. Ask any decent teaching pro that has a book full of lessons everyday and they will tell you they'd rather teach on clay if possible. Hard courts beat you up in so many ways and the tennis is often either an uninteresting serving contest or a match full of short rallies.

Oh poor Sodemizer, I can't stand his arrogant butt. he's as bad as Jelena Yanksondick, using illnesses to rest up for other tournaments that count more towards making the end of year big one. I hope his plan backfires and he totally misses out. Bad enough Jelena pulled out of Moscow as soon as she qualified. I get so tired of her being down in tournaments and then, I NEED THE TRAINER, I NEED THE TRAINER. Play or dont play, but once you enter a tournament, unless you suffer a major injury you should have to finish it. His elbow hurts, boo hoo hoo.

Soderling will not be beat if he gets on a roll like the US open, I still can't believe 108mph baseline shots. However Roger is still the boss and if Nadal can get healthy, he'll compete, too.

Soderling is moving up and how about Nadal?

Nadal should spare sometimes to look back at his heaviest defeats:

-DEFEAT against Federer in Munich that eneded his straight wins on clay
-VICTORY over Djokovic in Madrid (nearly 4 hours) that led to his succcessive failures.

    ALL CAME FROM OVERPLAY

I believe Nadal will moving up again.

I loved Soderling playing when he faced Federer some years back.

Recently Soderling is much better and for sure if he could played more consistently throughout the match he could beat anyone.

I think Soderling represent a new breed of players with 6'4'' or taller ,big serve and early approach of the ball ...becoming the tennis futuerists.

I love Robin aside from my idol Roger. Stay focus in every match and I know that you can do it in the top 5 next year just be consistent and play your game. Good luck in your career next year and hope you can win Grandslam just like Delpo.

Marcos, way to go you wild and crazy Cypriot!!! I love watching him play..he's so much fun! I hope he stays healthy and can make a deep run here!!!
Tommy, you're showing the "old warrior" still has some nifty tricks in your bag :-) He's been through so much & I hope he stays healthy too!! Good luck to the German!
Feliciano, I was worried about you last week when you were playing your compatriot Rafa..He didn't look good at all and I wondered if he would even play this tournament..I hope he too will stay healthy!
So many are the walking wounded right now. It's stressful to watch so can only imagine how difficult it is for the players to endure~Good luck guys :-)
