Federer to play extra clay-court event in 2010

  • Print

BASEL, Switzerland (AP)—Roger Federer will play an extra clay-court tournament next year to prepare for his defense of the French Open title.

The top-ranked Swiss intends to play 19 events in 2010, according to a playing schedule published Tuesday on his Web site.

Federer has added the Estoril Open in Portugal next May, which he won in 2008 but skipped this year. Federer won the Madrid Masters on clay this year before capturing the title at Roland Garros for the first time.

Federer has cut the Japan Open from his schedule next October.

He also is expected to lead Switzerland’s quest for a first Davis Cup title.

pete'sbest14- Did you read Kim M;s suggestion on the other thread- that was so nice of her to offer-how we could exchange e-mail and addresses .
Did you wonder whathappened- I was quiet for the last couple of days- my computer had tantrums- I really thought I needed a new one, but thanks to my friend who knows so much about computer- and she was able to diagnose the problem and she was here for more than two hours- and hurray- it is now again working in full swing. glad to be back!!!

#14 raypalgrwewal, you may be right about the points, although he is going to sit out Monte Carlo which is a Masters series 1000 point event. Sampras' record is 286 weeks. If Federer continues to be #1, his 286th week will be the Monday after the final's of French Open, so yes he has a lot of points to defend - Madrid and FO wins.

Halle, is on his schedule but if he reaches the FO final, there is no way Roger is going to play on grass on Wednesday the same week in Germany. He will take two weeks off and try to defend Wimbledon.

The summer schedule is tough and I am waiting to see what Rafa's schedule looks like. I am also not sure if Rafa can go into Wimbledon without a tune up tournament. Again if he makes the FO finals, he will probably have to play the grass tuneup on Wednesday. Rafa will not have played a tour level match on grass for almost 2 years at that point (I know he played a couple of exhibition matches against Wawrinka and Hewitt to test his knees on grass this summer).

I also think Roger learnt the art of scheduling from Tony Roche. Roche used to coach Lendl, who was a fitness freak and played almost every week. Today's Lendl would be Davydenko, who probably plays the most number of tournaments when healthy. This is also where Rafa and Uncle Toni did not have too much experience but I hope the last two years have taught them a lesson.

I believe Rogers is doing this to pick up extra ranking points going into the French Open (where he needs to defend his 2000 points). If he's still number one after the French, he'll pass Sampras for most weeks at number one. (i might be off by a week or two).

The great thing about Federer is that he never needs to take a "break" by missing Wimbledon... talk about idiotic pacing.. LOL

Federer doesn't need to be the best at court. He mixes his outer-court skills with his inner court skills to be number 1.

Roger is a master of scheduling. He will NOT play a schedule which will over-load him.
Another part of his yet "efficient" approach to playing tennis!! He's is "charge".
He'll be just fine, baring any type unforeseen injury. Heaven forbid :-)
Rafa, I hope, will "trim" his clay court season!!! His body is no longer (at least for now) up to the rigorous stresses the grueling soft red clay causes & HIS approach to tennis is SO all out, so grinding, he punishes himself with each point! Sometimes it's even painful to watch when I know he's injured, yet he just pushes through~
Two VERY great and gifted players of this era, yet very different styles.
One, seemingly, creates longevity, the other not so much. Of course much of this is in the "GENES" too. Certainly DNA has much to do with our athletic ability or lack thereof.
Some are born in different parts of the world with different types of surfaces & teams of coaches to guide them along the way. I personally feel "some" of those teams are NOT as good as others~Some have the player's welfare less at the center of their concerns as they do their own~
I feel blessed to have seen the great Pete Sampras play for many wonderful years and many others do what they did SO well and now I feel very much the same way about Roger and Rafael.
Great players, Classy gentlemen and Humble ambassadors for their sport~
MUCH SUCCESS to both these fine men!!!
I DO look forward to watching both play, but I hope I don't have to see EITHER retire and walk off the court "wounded"~
    Take care "Gentlemen"~

    Josh S Post #1:

Federer will not wear himself out . He is very good in scheduling his tennis matches. And if ever he needs to take a break- as long as he is healthy and injury free, due to hectic and gruesome tennis matches- he will if he needs to. Especially now that he is father! He can equally schedule his affairs in his professional life, as well as personal life.

    Here is Roger's 2010 schedule:

Capitala World Tennis Championship, Abu Dhabi
    Qatar Exxonmobil Open, Doha
    Australian Open, Melbourne
    Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, Dubai
    BNP Paribas Open, Indian Wells
    Sony Ericsson Open, Miami
    Internazionali BNL d’Italia, Rome
    Estoril Open, Estoril
    Mutua Madrileña Masters, Madrid
    Roland Garros, Paris
    Gerry Weber Open, Halle
    Wimbledon, London
    Rogers Cup, Toronto
Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, Cincinnati
    U.S. Open, New York
    Shanghai ATP Masters 1000, Shanghai
    Davidoff Swiss Indoors, Basel
    BNP Paribas Masters, Paris
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, London

Federer has a couple of "appearance fee" tournaments early in the year. Dubai, Estoril, Halle and Shanghai are on the schedule but can dropped if he needs rest. Interestingly Monte Carlo, which is a Masters Series tournament is also off his schedule. Additionally, Davis Cup is not part of this list. Switzerland and Spain play each other in the 1st round, so either Roger or Rafa will have only 2 rounds of Davis Cup next year.

I am also interested in how Nadal is going to schedule himself next year. Is he going to overload the clay season as usual or will he also drop Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Scheduling is the key in staying injury free and longevity in tennis.

I like Federer. I wish him and his family well. The great thing about anybody is not how great he/she is but how humble he/she is. Federer has that virtue.

Roger seems to be making it clear that he is not satisfied with just one French Open title. Good luck to him in 2010.

God willing, hope Federer will be in the best of health- injury free for him to be able to follow his planned tennis schedule for the coming year 2010. He is one player who knows when to put a break - should he need to; if he needs to. Good Luck to you Roger!

Well, at least I know now it might be Federer who wears himself out instead of Nadal next year.
