Serena Williams pulls out of Fed Cup final

  • Print

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP)—Serena Williams withdrew from the U.S. team that will face Italy in the Fed Cup final, deciding she needs to rest after a long season.

Williams informed U.S. Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez she won’t play in the Nov. 7-8 matches, U.S. Tennis Association spokesman Chris Widmaier told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Vania King replaces Williams on the roster, joining surprise U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin, Liezel Huber and Alexa Glatch. Fernandez had announced this week Williams would play Fed Cup for the first time since 2007.

Willliams will play sister Venus Williams in Sunday’s final of the WTA championships in Doha, Qatar. She has been playing with her left thigh strapped in the season-ending tournament.

“I think I’m just going to be wiped out by the end of this,” she said after winning her semifinal Saturday when injured Caroline Wozniacki quit in the second set. “I’m literally just giving everything I have.”

Williams leads active women with 11 Grand Slam singles titles and is unbeaten in Fed Cup singles play.

Post 83, Peter, your point is a moot one. There is no money in playing Fed Cup. None of us are mindreaders so none of us know what Serena would do but again since it is not going to happen it doesn't matter. If you objectively followed Serena's career, you would know that she has pulled out of many grand slam and Tier 1 tournaments due to injury. In fact, for the record, she has only played in all four grand slams in the same year about four times. Considering that she has been on tour some 14 years, that is not a lot.

Here again, we have the situtation where Serena will never be able to please unreasonable and critical people. When she was on the team, she should have not been allowed on the team, now that she is not on the team, she is self-centered, self-absorbed. Serena is injured and tired. Why should she risk her health for people who don't appreciate her no matter what. Fed Cup should not be scheduled the week after the year end championships where most of the players are banged up.

I like Venus and great enjoy and respect many African-American athletes. RACE has NOTHING to do with it for me. I simply think Serena lacks some character and class. I also think she is incredibly self-absorbed. It's that simple. If you want to call that racist, that's your problem. Don't lump me in with other people and pay attention to your own racism and arrogance. Look in the mirror. If you were truly secure and intelligent in your position, you wouldn't have the need to go to such depths of racism yourself, nor would you need to acting like some 13 year old punk who needs to use vulgarity. Take the log out of your own eye. GUESS what???? I'm half black!!!

Thanks for the compliment. I won't lose any sleep over your statement tonight. That lineswoman should be lucky it was Serena and not me, she screw with. I would have taken that racket and went upside her head with my racket. stupid Bi@#@ch.

Everything that I said in my post, is nothing but the truth. Some of you people still have racist and hostile attitudes towards the Williams sisters, because of their accomplishments. You made it so obvious, because look at all the players on the WTA Tour, which the majority all White, except for the two African American, and most of the criticisms are directed towards them, and they are not constructive criticism., they are vile and hateful. I have not seen or heard a negative statement coming from some of White fans made toward Sharapova, Kim, Juicine aka Justine, or any of the white players, always Venus and Serena, What do you expect us to believe otherwise. White fans hate them because they are dominant beyong measure, even in their late twenties. Some of you are hoping for them to go away, keep waiting, it's going to be a long time, because they are not leaving the sports anytime soon. MARTINA NAVARIOTOLOVA left when she was almost 50 years old, BILLY JEAN KING left when she was 38. The williams will leave when they decide they can't play anymore.
So get use to the idea of having them around and willing more slams. JUICINE aka JUSTINE coming back means nothing, Serena and Venus was still winning when she was around. The only person who should be worried about Juicine returning should be KIM CLIJSTER. she was JUICINE biggest rival.

So much hate and disrespect on this blog. It is sad so many people feel angry when a African American dominate a white sport. White people need to face the true racism and hate they carry inside.
The Williams sisters have no effect on any of your personal lives, so I continue to ask my self, why all of the hatred and name calling when it comes to the William Sisters? So it's as simple as this... Many of you wish you were the Williams sisters, or wish your sister could play tennis as well as they do, or maybe you wish any white female from America could play as well as the Williams Sister. So keep on hating, and spewing out your evil, but the fact of the matter is the William sisters was laughing all the way to the bank from the Doha Championships and your broke A$$ is sitting at home angry and upset for no damn reason. Three words..GET OVER IT.

Delores, you are one of the most racist people I've ever read.

While recognizing your right to be upset with certain "white privilege" and the still solid number of white racists out there, you go back to things that really don't impact on you here in the present. A decent percentage of African-Americans use examples of what happened to their ancestors as a rationale for their present racism. The reality is that it's an excuse by this time. The overwhelming majority of African Americans have the same opportunities to excel as whites in this day in age. In some areas, they actually have more due to certain educational/vocational programs available today that weren't in existence even 40 yrs. ago.

Look at the lack of class you show in your responses. Look how quickly you have to let your own vicious racism come out and the immature, garbage statements you need to make. Do you like Bill Cosby? Bill Cosby said it's about time African-American men in the inner cities stop justifying their "right" to sell drugs, father children outside of marriage with multiple women and then, usually not BEING THERE TO SUPPORT THEIR KIDS. He also talked about young African American women who give themselves permission to have sex outside of marriage, get pregnant at young ages and bring children into the world when they are not ready to be parents and are content to live off the SYSTEM. It's not just African-American's of course, but his point is that many blacks give themselves permission to continue in feeling OWED by society and justifying their immoral or illegal behavior.
Many blacks like yourself are so BLIND to your own racism and your own excuse making. You don't see it and give yourself permission to be as obnoxious and arrogant as you are. Just because someone like me makes a negative statement about Serena being selfish, that doesn't mean I'm racist. It mean that Serena has shown a lack of class and character on many occasions. Black, purple, green--doesn't matter. Serena is not a very good ambassador for the sport and her refusal to play Fed Cup is an incomprehensibly selfish and unacceptable thing to do. Deal with it and take the blinders off your own arrogant racism.

I sorry, didn't D. Safina and several other players have to pull out of the tournament for injuries? Their bodies get tired just like yours and mine. What makes Serena classless because she knows she won't be fit enough to play as well for the Fed Cup? She's played almost everyday of the tournament including doubles. I don't understand the purpose of your comments. Those ladies put their bodies through a lot of stress and strain to play as well as they do. They've been able to play longer than quite a few others who have quit and are coming back. Just because she has a personality that doesn't match your idea of a person "with class" doesn't make her any less limited in her physical body. She's flesh and blood like you and me, she gets tired, sore, fatigued, etc. just like you and me. She can be in the best shape in the world but she is "human" and her body still gets tired and fatigued. I honestly don't think there's anything Serena can do that will ever make you feel any different. I pray you can find it in your heart to be more positive and supporting, it makes you feel better.

#93 Frank... What does obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes in the black community have to do with tennis? I guess you are discussing body types with someone, and body "types" usually deal with genetics. I won't draw the race card on statistics, but I'll just say that it's not relevant to a tennis post.

And if you think that blacks having a higher rate of obesity, high blood pressure, or diabetes makes them inferior in some way, that's pretty ridiculous. Not sure of any other reason why you would bring it up. All of those are health situations, and they are directly relevant to a lack of access to medical care and intensity of treatment, as well as their relations to people in poorer sections of the USA. In areas where blacks have more access to medical care and better treatment, as well as higher income, the rates drop drastically. Nice try, though.

What plantation did you and you ancestors came from in the South? How many slaves did your ancestory whipped and lynch to death? I bet you, there were countless, probably thousands. People like you sit behind your computer and wished it was 1865 where you can beat, raped and kill black people. Besides owning slaves what have you and your ancestors did for this country, Oh they did kill black people, rape and deprived the American Indians their rights. This is not the 1860 's anymore stop telling people how they should live thier lives, where they can go and what sports they should play. Sorry to disappoint you, but its 2009 wake up, Slavery have long being abolished.

She is a man. That is the extra edge, no matter what or how much better and talented all the other girls are than her and her sister. It's simply an out of place situation on the tour. The sisters should have their own tour of matches, plain and simple. Leave the tour alone and let it be a WOMEN'S tour how it always has been except starting in the late 90s unfortunately.

You right Delores this will end another complaint. I think it is interesting how when Henin is gone they say the quality is down but when Venus and Serena left for injuires, death in the family and parents divorce they were not complaing about the level of women's tennis.

What did I told you last sunday, when I saw the draw. Don't worry about the draw, because Serena will be hold that trophy on Sunday. I am not worried about Kim and Justine returning, that don't mean anything to the sister, If they have to, they will step up their game. In fact, I am happy Kim and Justine are returning, you need to mix up the competition a bit. When the sister are winning, they cannot say the competition is weak. There is going to be a lot of good competitors in 2010. Caroline, Victoria, Sharapova and a few others. Anyone who win a slam in 2010, is definitely a good player, and only the best of the best will win.

Ms. Carol, please let us celebrate with these two multi-talented young women whom we admire and they intern demonstrate their love for each other because they know the difference between a game and their relationship. I plan to make the haters obsolete today and deprive them of the attention they so desire to feel important. I will speak over their head and make silence deafening to them.

Serena is selfish and self-absorbed. It's pretty obvious. For her to do this shows a lack of character and class. She makes millions of dollars for PLAYING TENNIS!! And, she plays best of three sets!!

It shows you where her priorities are. When you listen to Serena talk and really understand her, you can see areas where she is very shallow and self-centered. That's just a fact. She's never been a very good ambassador for the sport, bottom line.

Congratulation to the Williams sisters for all the exciting play they have brought all year. You wonderful sisters do not need any to divide your wonderful and loving relationship you have and share with each other. We admire the seperation between a game of tennis and a lasting loving relationship your parents for raising you all to not by in on any hype and know that when the game is over you all are still blood sisters. I am so happy you all live together. I love you both and thanks for the wonderful excitement you all bring to the game of tennis. I dread the day when you all would leave tennis.
