Safin says Agassi should give titles, money back

  • Print

PARIS (AP)—Former No. 1-ranked Marat Safin believes that Andre Agassi should give his tennis titles back after confessing he tested positive for a banned substance during his career and lied about it to the ATP.

Agassi admitted in his autobiography “Open” that he used crystal meth in 1997 and failed a drug test, a result he says was thrown out after he lied by saying he “unwittingly” took the substance.

Safin, who plans to retire this month, said in an interview with L’Equipe newspaper on Tuesday that Agassi should “give his titles, his money and his Grand Slam titles” back.

“I’m not defending the ATP, but what he said put it in a delicate position,” Safin said. “The ATP allowed him to win a lot of tournaments, a lot of money. It kept his secret. Why does he need to be so cruel with it?”

Agassi, who retired in 2006, won 60 titles, including eight Grand Slams, during his career. He recently told The Associated Press that he had to speak about his lies because he couldn’t live with it anymore.

“If he is as fair play as he says he is, he has to go to the end,” Safin said. “You know, the ATP has a bank account and he can give the money back if he wants.”

Safin, who will retire after this week’s Paris Masters, won the 2000 U.S. Open and 2005 Australian Open. The 29-year-old Russian said he isn’t going to write his autobiography when his career will be over.

“Me, I don’t need money,” he said. “The question is: Why did he do this? What is done is done. Does he hope to sell more books? It’s absolutely stupid.”

Safin says what ??? hahaha... who cares what Safin says.
He's a guy who could have reach a much higher status if
he had concentrated in playing ... Instead, he spent years
losing his temper and speaking nonsense! Congratulations
Marat for your two Slam titles, but you're better off when you
    don't open your mouth...

Wow is everyone this stupid? Does anyone not realize this is all a way to garner attention to an otherwise wasted attempt at writing a book! I hope ya'll have better things to worry about than this bunch of garbage! World hunger, unemployment, children without homes, things that need attention! Why not focus your attention and dollars spent on something that means a better way of living for everyone, not just those in the limelight waiting to get richer off of everyone that is either too stupid or just gullible enough to buy into these money making schemes. Why just the lucky few? Because we allow it! How many people work 40+ hours at a job that is physically and mentally exhausting just to survive and keep there family in clothes , food and shelter? Then you have those who make millions of dollars for doing something we call sport or entertainment. Who do you think really deserves the big dollars? When we start focusing our attention on things that really matter, then we will all see a change for the better!!!!

Safin makes it sound like Agassi won all the Grand Slams that year as a result of taking the crystal meth when in fact, 1997 was the low point of Agassi's career. So the meth didn't help Andre in any way.

2 drama queens going at it. Safin is probably annoyed that Agassi is stealing the spot light from his retirement. Given Agassi's high profile retirement at the US Open, I was thinking he would fade away into the sunset. Too bad he's resurfaced for more attention. Instead of playing the victim, he could've resurfaced with more dignity, like McEnroe, and be a tennis commentator for ESPN.

Safin is a kywag who is pissed because he did not have the career that Agassi had. Many great players in all sport have doen drugs, is it right., Hell no but they only hurt themselves by cutting short their career. Who knows what would have happen if he stayed clean, the frugs sure the hell did not make him better.

Crystal meth can anyone please explain what this would do for his tennis game and how it would affect it in anyway. OH thats rite no-one can because the only thing it would do for his tennis game is ruin it if he were an addict. It's a get high loose all your senses drug and would ruin anyoine ones chance at competeing at any level of any sport if they were on it. Yes it was a banned substance that he was caught using and should have been suspended or banned or whatever the punishment was for a banned substance at that time. It does not however change the fact that he is one of the best of all time. SAFIN you are an overrated player always have been for other words YOU SUCK and so does anyone who agrees with your comments

I have more respect for Andre now more than ever. He had no need to come clean with this admission. However, he felt...., and I agree 100% that if he was going to write a book about his life he had to be completely honest, more so earning up to the title of the book. This drug did not enhance his abilities on the court so I don't understand why he should return his titles. He earned them and they are his. Andre has more money to last him a couple of lifetimes without ever working again, so it wasn't the need to sell his book and make big bucks that he came clean. I have already purchased the book. As for Marat Safin..., he just wishes his career as a tennis star would have been more rewarding. Good luck Safin!! Congratulations Agassi, you are my hero!

I love Andre and Marat Safin. I also understand were Marat was coming from. I don't believe he was speaking literally, but figuratively. I just think he feels that Andre should have kept the drug use to himself because it makes the ATP and tennis look bad as a whole. I do not know why Andre felt the need to talk about this. Needless to say, tennis would not have been the same without Andre. So I am thankful for him then as well as now. He is doing great things for kids.

Tennis would also not have been the same without the Williams sisters, but when Serena had her little human moment, everyone was ready to throw her under the bus. Yes, she was wrong. Andre was wrong. Federer was wrong when he cursed the umpire out at the US open. Nobody said anything about that. It was on tape. One of the commentators remarked on it as well.

Johnny Mac and Conners behavior was never model like either. Hell, they are making commercials about Johhny Mac, glorifying his temper.

The Williams sisters are Americans. We are proud of Andy Roddick, Sampras, Johnny Mac and Conners who had the worst tempers, Billie Jean King, Tracy Austin, Chris Everette, etc,,. But are quick to go against our very own Williams sisters.

You are quick to come down down on Safrin the Russian, but was rooting for a French woman to beat your very own.

Atfter all Andre only took a drug which was against reguations. He was at a low point in his life and took these drugs, but was not winning at the time therefore, this should not affect the wins he had in the aftermath once he straighterned himself up.

Now, Serena cursed out the lines woman in an emotional outburst during her match, but never touch the woman. No one believes she would be that stupid. I do understand her emotions though. She was playing a very important match for the US Open title and her fellow Americans were cheering on her opponent instead of her. A FRENCH WOMAN. But when Safin the Russian speaks against the Golden Boy, he is now ignorant and has fallen from he good graces of the Americans. Before this everyone was talking about how much Safrin would be missed. GO Figure Americans. Don't be so hipocritical.

Good Luck Andre. I will definitely be purchasing your book!!!! And yours too Serena.

Some people think that because meth is not a performance enhancing drug, then what Agassi did is okay. And they commended that he came out and told the truth about it. Maybe the same people forget that using a ban substance (performance enhancing or not) require a mandatory suspension. Look up on Hingis' suspension on using cocaine. Bear in mind that Agassi was at the lowest point of his career in 1997, a year or two suspension might change his career direction and accomplishments, in which 5 of 8 his GS titles were won after 1997. Arguably, Agassi might still be able to win those GS titles with the suspension. However, if Agassi was truly repentant about what he did, he could've done better to those directly affected (ATP) than just writing it on a book, which by the way he needs to sell.

No one on this blog, myself included, would ever complain to Safin to his face because he is truely one tough Russian dude who simply calls it like he sees it. In the drab, colorless world of men's tennis, Marat was always a breath of fresh air and one of the all time greatest the few times his game clicking. I see him doing lots of Vodka commercials....

It's painful to watch those we admire fall from grace. When our heroes show their human side, many of us are disappointed, disillusioned and some of us are just downright blood thirsty. I'm not surprised to read that Agassi was taking drugs back then. It was obvious that he was troubled in his younger days. He acted like a jerk, was irreverent and generally a pain in the tail, obviously wasn't enjoying himself and made headlines when he was overheard making up a lie to get out of playing in a tournament. Agassi made a lot of missteps in his life and career, but on his journey he learned to appreciate what he had been given and has since tried to use his talent for good. Of course, what Agassi did was 12 years ago was terribly wrong, but it was 12 years ago. And you have to give him credit that he's done a lot to try make up for his transgressions. That he learned from his mistakes is the most important thing in all this.

But I think the larger questions is, why the hell is Marat Safin being quoted and why are we wasting good space responding to what he said? I mean, really . . .

This statement by Safin shows why, despite enormous talent he was one of Tennis' biggest underachievers. Safin is ignorant and so is his statement. I'm very disappointed that Agassi took Meth but saying he should give everything back is utterly ridiculous. If anything meth will ruin your game. What a jerk.
