Agassi tells mag he did meth ‘for a year or so’

  • Print

NEW YORK (AP)—Andre Agassi used crystal meth periodically for “a year or so,” the eight-time Grand Slam champion revealed in an interview with People magazine.

In his upcoming autobiography, Agassi admits he used crystal meth in 1997 and failed a drug test—a result he says was thrown out after he lied by saying he “unwittingly” took the substance.

“If you’re going to tell your story, you owe it to yourself to tell it honestly,” Agassi told the magazine in its latest issue. “Especially if you’re going to call it ‘Open,”’

New excerpts published Friday reveal Agassi wore a hairpiece that nearly fell off at the 1990 French Open, became jealous during ex-wife Brooke Shields’ appearance on “Friends,” and how Shields put a photo of Steffi Graf—now married to Agassi—on the fridge for motivation to get in better shape before their wedding.

“It’s a photo of the perfect woman, she says” Agassi wrote. “The perfect woman with the perfect legs—the legs Brooke wants.”

Agassi also explains how he and Shields begin dating shortly after Christmas 1993 and connected by sharing their experiences with pushy parents. He also reveals that he stormed off the set of “Friends,” becoming jealous when Shields had to lick actor Matt LeBlanc’s hand.

“Have some more hand. I’m out of here,” wrote Agassi, who said he consulted Shields on the book.

“A lot of our recollections were the same, but not the interpretations,” Agassi told the magazine. “I tried to turn a harder lens on myself than on anyone else.”

And it was the camera lens that haunted Agassi.

The tennis star’s brother was sent running around Paris to find bobby pins to keep Agassi’s disintegrating spiked-mullet weave from coming off his head before a match in the 1990 French Open.

“Of course I could play without my hairpiece. But after months of derision, criticism, mockery, I’m too self-conscious,” he wrote. “Image Is Everything? What would they say if they knew? Win or lose, they wouldn’t talk about my game. They’d only talk about my hair. I can close my eyes and almost hear it. And I know I can’t take it.”

i said this and no one even responded to it: you know, there's no doubt about it, Agassi was a great player. And as a person he is now, or at least seems to be, with all his charity work and schools and such, a great person...but back in those days didn't we all know that he was a shallow, empty-headed twirp that thought he was someone better than he really was? it sounds like this book is confirming many of our perceptions from way back when...
.... and he obviously underwent a transformation in his coming to terms with his hair falling out. he had to recreate the world (at least in his mind) and himself in order to redefine himself as a bald person with no hair, which he has done, hopefully and thankfully...it seems to have changed his values. I think this happens to a lot of men who end up losing their hair. The image of their self is deteriorating right in front of their eyes. Maybe the meth stuff was part of him trying to cope with this image of himself. but it's what it is, good, bad, and ugly.

"Agassi also explains how he and Shields began dating shortly after Christmas 1993 and connected by sharing their experiences with pushy parents."

Attention all parents, current and future: Are you convinced yet? Screwed-up parents (or "pushy" parents, which is the euphemism Agassi chose to use) screw up their offspring. It is the responsibility of parents to train their children in how to navigate through and cope healthily in life. If parents are unable to do this, their offspring pay dearly. Most people who become hooked on drugs are desperately trying to cope with deep-seated misery they are chronically experiencing, and healthy mentalities and life skills taught to them by their parents (guardians, etc.) could have prevented this sick situation of having to learn late in life how to live healthily and non-destructively.

Does anybody think that Brooke Shields's relationship with Michael Jackson was one between two mentally and emotionally healthy adults? Did anybody think that her performance at Michael Jackson's public memorial service was one of a mentally and emotionally healthy adult? "Can you say 'over-the-top melodrama'"? Remember Brooke Shields's public airing of her serious generalized and post-partum depression? Brooke Shields is doing a cameo on television every few years or so, and ads for an eyelash-growing medication. Her loftier types of acting projects all bomb. Hey, but none of this matters if you look good, right?

Agassi's career in tennis is past history as is his meth years.
It appears that he has a great family right now and why he needs to open his soul to the whole world is beyond me.

Do you see the picture here? Apparently you've been lied to about meth and Agassi's story is proof. Here's someone who used meth(the so-called worst drug on earth) yet he was able to stay out of trouble, he played great tennis and did all these other great things. As with most drugs it comes down to being responsible and that means using the drug responsibly. The worst drug on earth by far is your legally sold alcohol and alcohol kills innocent people too. I know you people will slam me for what I just said but stop being stupid for one moment and think and you will find I'm right about the alcohol. I don't condone any drug use but to label meth the worst drug on earth just shows you how gullible you all are to believing everything the government leads you to believe. I bet most all of you believe that meth causes your teeth to rot and fall out- well you're wrong. It's the lack of nutrition from not eating while you're on meth that causes that. I could go on but that's already too much for you. I'll leave you with this question that will baffle you. Why is meth so addicting?

It is not an performing enhancing DRUG....being judgemmetal & righteous will make you feel "right" and nothing else.... He is and was a great Tennis player, regardless of whether he conusmed recreational drugs or not....it amazing that for a society that broadly considers alcohol (a synthetic mood enhancer) appropriate for every occassion in life there is such judgement for any other mood altering substances....

Judge his Tennis, honesty and the difference he has and is making to the world.....

we all have different battles in our lifetime and as long as you are winning those battles and be happy about it,that's the most important.

those battles (be it drugs, sports, family, friends, relationships, etc) can make or break you. andre's battle for drugs was 20+ years ago. the most important thing is he overcome it and came back on top of the game that he love. most of all, in and out the court he is happy.

everything happens for a reason. sometimes it takes time to ever realize it, let alone write a book about it.

Great athlete. It takes a lot of guts n honesty to disclose all those things as he did in his latest Autobiography "Open". He'll remain a hero in all of our heart. Doesn't matter what he did or how he did. Drug don't make anyone a great tennis player, it takes a lot more than that like talent, dedication, commitment, hard work. He did a great job for the community and the underprivileged and he's still doing it. Always a gentleman and always a charmer in whatever he does.

why are you trusting him now...nothing has changed..it is the same charitable foundation and he is married again..if he lied before he will lie again...
