Venus, Sharapova sign on for Thailand

BANGKOK (AFP) - Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova will warm-up for the Australian Open with a exhibition match in Thailand to mark the 100th anniversary of the Hua Hin seaside resort, according to organisers.

The tennis superstars will spend New Year's Eve in Hua Hin before their match on January 2, which will be followed by a mixed doubles clash alongside local heroes Paradorn Srichaphan and Danai Udomchoke.

"I am delighted to be able to spend my New Year in Hua Hin, Thailand," said Sharapova, who is battling to find her best form again after arthroscopic surgery a year ago to repair her right shoulder.

"I am sure it will be an exciting time and I am looking forward to competing in the Centennial Invitation."

Williams, who lost to sister Serena in the final of the season-ending WTA Championships this month, is also excited.

"I have very fond memories of my previous visits to Thailand and am really looking forward to returning for the Centennial Invitation match in Hua Hin," she said.

After their match, both players move to Hong Kong for the Tennis Classic team event, which features players representing Europe, Russia, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific.

They then head to Australia for the opening Grand Slam of the season.

    1. Who are the members of the Psycho Lunatic Squad? What is their purpose?
    2. "tiny opponents"...Who are they? What makes them "tiny"?
    3. Have you observed anyone being spit on, kicked, or slain by a tennis racquet? When? By whom?
    4. There is a movie called " It's a Wonderful Life". What is a "Thug's Life"? If it's a movie, where can I rent it? If it's not a movie, what is it?

Thanks in advance for your detailed, objective, accurate, and verifiable answers.

Mop; GREAT question/comment! I've seen only a few exhibition matches in my life...they've been great fun, but not competitive. In a very real way, it's great to see players able to relax and to have 100% FUN. Win or lose, in these matches, it's DEFINITELY how you play the game! :-)

There is one fact that is abundantly clear, many Americans dislike WS because of their color. The excuses range from arrogant, poor losers, uppity, unattractive, unpatriotic, steroids, classless, father,
and the (one) infamous out burst. Venus has only exhibited class since appearing on tour, in her wins as well as her losses. Serena, is a warrior an in your face athlete who will not give quarter or credit to any opponent (and believes she should win them all) it is refreshing to me. It is also the new trend of athletes now, but seen as arrogant when she does it only. They have worked hard to become the "great" players they are, and yet two different approaches. Venus the states-person, Serena the Joint Chief of staff. They deserve to be treated fairly, when most women tennis players careers are over by age 24, they are still going strong @ 27 and 29. What's really sad is people from other countries notice the hate shown by some to them. They played in two Olympics and multiple Fed Cups already! Ed, think about that before you post bile.

The girls are good and dominant. I really hope that they don't pay any attention to these people who always have a gripe. I guess those Olympic gold medals don't count. It is a sad state that people have to go there about these young ladies. Somehow I dont't think they're (Venus and Serena) worried about these tirades. They're too busy living their lives and getting paid for their skills. I'm glad they were raised not to worry about what people say. In the end we see a lot of people who have used drugs, lied and cheated on the court. However, we don't see too much about these occurrences in the blogs. Personally, tennis would be extremely boring without the Williams. However, it might a good thing for them if they left the game and let these haters view the dull, boring games before their advent.

ED...Your mother should try out for the Fed cup team next year. She plays ball really well. You can tell her I will drop her flip flops over later. I offered her a towel and washcloth but they were still dry when she left this morning. She also left a box of government cheese in my refrigerator; I'll bring that as well. Oh! By the way, she may be just a little late: I saw her go into my neighbors house when she left. We all call your mother Lady Poonanny the wanderer.

It's "White Trash" like you, is the reason why they don't play for this country. I hope they don't play the fed cup anymore. Kim is your darling. You people gave her the support at the USO, Mary Jo Fernandez should have given her a call to play for the USA, funny, I don't think she would have, since she is more patriotic to her own country. "Belgium" Why should Venus and Serena play for a country and it's people who despised them because they are so dominant. I am so happy Italy won the fed cup, I hope every country wins except for the US. We love you Venus and Serena, haters will always hate because they have an "INFERIOR COMPLEX" because both of you are good at what you do. HATERS KEEP HATING, THEY ARE UNSTOPPABLE!

I think most of the angry fans writing their comments here just agravate the situation when they are tolking bad about the williams sisters. There are no psychological way of putting it out. I think the WTA and all tennis federations should make it a lot easier for the player not to have any excuse whatsoever to make their decision to play for their countries, It believe it would be to the advantage of every party involve in the process. For exemple, We have 4 grand slams tournaments. 2 of them are played less than a month appart. in between the players are expected to play the fed cup. I myself would never forgive any players who are at the top of their games and refuse to play for their nation. But, I am not going overbaord to say the bad things that everybody are reading and could jeopardize any further decision making in the sport. We are all tennis fans. this is why we're here pointing out our views. We should not be too rhetoric in our expressions. I think if they could move the Australian open to either march or making it the last grand slam of the year as it used to be scheduled. If the australian open could be moved and the wimbledon tournament as well would go a little further such as be played in the end of july and the US open in the end of september then there could be some times for the players to make their decision and play the fed cup. If I were a decision maker in the scheduling of tennis tournaments and other competitions such as fed cup and ATP I think players would never have an excuse not to play for their nartions. My schedule would be January and february preparation for the first grand slams; First grand slam would be played the 2nd and 3rd weeks of mach; Fed and Davis cup would be played the last week-end of march. April and may preparation for the 2nd grand slam the 2nd and 3rd weeks of June; the 4th week-end would be FEd and Davis cup plays; july would be preparation for the 3rd grand and the 2nd and 3rd weeks of august would be the 3rd grand slam tournament plays and the 4th week of august would be fed and davis cup plays; and september would be preparation for the last grand slam of the year; 2nd and 3rd wekks of october the last grand slam of the year and the 3rd week of November would be the championship tourmanent of the year; and the last week-end of November would be the finals of the fed and davis cups. What anyone think about this proposal idea.

Get your a$$ out there and play some tennis and workout like the William sisters. If I was the William sisters I would not have played either. My body is tired, my leg and knee are wrapped. What more do you want from them? Its time for the US to start using their young tennis players. The William sisters are in their late twenties, get some of them young players. I don't care how upset Mary and who else is. It always something about them and what they do wrong....get a life..

Ed, you are so dumb. Did you even read the article? The link is wrong. It is Sharapova and Venus who are playing. Serena is not in the event. By the way, both Venus and Serena have done more for the US than you will ever dream of doing for your country.

johnp is right, but I WOULD buy a ticket if it were Pete, Roger or Rafa, James & Tommy..Ana, Kim, Venus, Amelie (sp)or Martina (H). NOT all, but some are pretty special to many fans for different reasons~
I'm pretty sure topseedno1 would (pay) to watch Pistol Pete play too! I "might" even pay to watch Pete mow his lawn..the Greek icon with his two boys in tow :-)
While I agree with Mopbrothers's point of view about "do we get the full flavor of a real match?",
I'm sure we don't, but for the pure joy of just being able to be court-side to watch someone we've loved watching play, respected or admired for so long, that would be "priceless".
I've seen Pete play, twice, but if he were to come here to play an exhibition match I would be there in a heart-beat. I would be happy with simply seeing him (play) again!
I suppose it's just the way we are about our personal favorites!

I once saw an exhibition match --- Johnny Mac. and Roscoe Tanner (sp) in Portland, Oregon. I don't get the point of exhibition matches. If players aren't truly invested, do we get the full flavor of a real match? I guess we get to see the players and get a taste of their game style. Do others enjoy such matches. Just wondering.
