Fed Cup just one tournament too many, says Serena

DOHA (AFP) - Serena Williams on Sunday blamed physical exhaustion for her withdrawal from the US team to face Italy in the Fed Cup final.

The world number one had been called up for the first time since 2007 to lead the American challenge in Reggio Calabria from November 7-8, but she insisted that her body would not hold up.

"I definitely really want to go, but I don't think I would do well physically," said Serena after defeating sister Venus in the WTA Championships final here on Sunday.

"It's very difficult to play such a mental week and then come back and play again. Right now I'm just struggling in every aspect of my body.

"It's a very difficult decision that I actually couldn't make. I had to get input from my mom and my dad. People that are close to me had to just basically tell me what I needed to do as opposed to me making the decision."

The US team to tackle Italy will be made up of Vania King, Alexa Glatch, US Open quarter-finalist Melanie Oudin and doubles specialist Liezel Huber.

    May god bless you....delores b.....you said it all. i could not have said it better. am from the caribbean and i have seen when the williams sisters play in the u.s. against any white player..the crowd cheer for the white play more. i just cant understand that..at least if you dont like the colour, then cheer for your country.

    Since you are so concerned with the FED CUP, you should have team up with KIM CLIJSTER and play for the US afterall the US fans cheer her in to USO finals and championship title. But out course KIM don't give a chit about you people, she won her 'PHANTOM' trophy went home and never to be heard from again, and you fu@#@#ng people expect Serena to paly for a "Racist' Country like the USA, give me a break. Serena did enough for this country alread. Remember the "GWH", Melaine Oudin, she "BELIEVED SHE COULD DO IT ON HER OWN" One hit Quarterfinal wonder. You people gave her a BIH HEAD and made her thought she would win the USO by being 'WHITE', some f@#@ng joke. JOHN Mc ENORE said she was the only American left in the match, Guess the GWH couldn't deliver for her country. She should learned how to play tennis, win some Slams and then that stupid bi@#@ch can talk trash, but for now she should shup the F@#@#up. Serena just keep resting for 2010, so you could kick some arse.

    How much does the Fed Cup pay? I doubt it's 1.5 million, or whatever she got for her last tourney.

    I don't think Mike would do well at all. I think he needs more training. Especially in cursing, whinning, @#$%ing, shooting up, disrespect, ........ the list goes on.
