FIRST SERVE

Centre Court witnessed two women's semifinal matches on Thursday. One displayed the sort of quality worthy of any final and one conjured no interest whatsoever.

Saturday's women's final, the latest matchup between the Williams sisters, could be a combination of both.

Because whatever the standard these two incredible athletes, who honed their skills and their championship mentality on the mean streets of Compton, are able to produce in the title game, there will be many who simply don't care.

An all-Williams final at the All England Club is many things. It is the latest chapter in an amazing sporting success story, one that began before Venus (pictured) and Serena were even born when Richard Williams decided to breed daughters who would change the tennis world.

It is a testament to the longevity of two women, who despite being only 29 and 27, have sustained their levels for a decade in a profession that typically has a short shelf-life.

It is a damning indictment too, on the rest of women's tennis, that no player, apart from the valiant Elena Dementieva against Serena on Thursday, was able to cause either sister to break into sweat over the course of the tournament.

What Saturday's final won't be, however, is gripping drama.

Grand Slam finals between these two are generally one-sided affairs in either direction and there really just isn't enough of a vested interest to have anyone biting their fingernails in nervous anticipation.

Those who love to hate the Williamses, and there are many, fueled by jealousy and resentment, don't want either of them to win.

Supporters, on the other hand, tend to simply be pro-Williams, showing no preference for either sister.

But even though it probably won't be the most exciting final, it is the right one.

It will be the best against the best, and maybe we shouldn't expect more than that.

DROP SHOT

James Blake and Mardy Fish came within a whisker of clinching an unexpected place in the doubles final, but blew a series of opportunities for victory in their semi, losing to Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic 10-8 in the fifth set.

CLEAN WINNER

Former finalist Zina Garrison's appearance at Wimbledon, in the over-45 ladies' doubles has been a welcome sight. Garrison has fought against eating disorders and personal problems and shows every sign of getting her life back together. An ignorant report in a London newspaper, which described her as being the size "of a small fort", won't cause her head to drop.

RAISING THE ROOF

Another day of bright blue skies and blazing sunshine, and the $120m spent on the Centre Court doesn't look like great value. But with heavy downpours scheduled for finals weekend, the steel and glass contraption could yet have a part to play in the destiny of the tournament.

GAME OF THE DAY

There wasn't much competition, was there? Dinara Safina's meek capitulation against Venus Williams was an utter waste of time. Even so, Serena Williams' epic victory over Elena Dementieva, 8-6 in the final set, was one of the highest quality women's matches ever seen at the Championships and certainly the best of the tournament so far.

FRIDAY'S PREDICTIONS

It is hard to look beyond what would be seen at the All England Club, and in much of the tennis world, as the dream final. Roger Federer should have more than enough to finally end Tommy Haas' dream run, while Andy Murray will have perhaps the best return in the game and patriotic pride behind him as he looks to blunt Andy Roddick's demonic serve.

Prediction: Federer beats Haas, Murray beats Roddick

Well, sadly Rogers has his predictions right today. But that's not to say I won't be supporting Andy Roddick in tomorrow's semi.
    Overall... go Federer.
And I'd just like to concur that women's tennis should just give up. Nobody cares anymore. It's a waste of money.

Martin Rogers, that's a poor excuse for an article. Next time, spend more than a few minutes writing it and check your racism at the door ("when Richard Williams decided to breed daughters"). Animals are bred, people are not. You're as pathetic as some of the nitwits who post here.

    M. Rogers- How do you know that the ladies final won't be a gripping final? Their earlier finals sucked of course, THEY'RE SISTERS! But you must've been sleeping during the 2003 Australian Open and Wimbledon finals. One sided? Anything but. Then consider the last 5 matches they have played....all incredible, gripping, hard fought and clean competitive matches....
Bangalore Semi's, Miami Semi's, Dubai semi's, Wimbledon 08 Final and US Open 08 Quarters....all great!
You're just like those stupid part time tennis fans who call all Williams affairs boring, not all of them have been. They are the two best on the grand slam finals stage and have shown over the past 3 years that they can play their best against eachother.
And as a Williams fan since I saw Venus lay Graf in 1995, I am rooting for Venus so that proves your theory wrong that you can't have a favorite.

Andy Murray's "best return in the game (really?, better than Agassi?) ) won't be of any use against the "demonic serve of Roddick. It will be raining aces tomorrow!

Martin you should be ashamed of yourself. But you have to get your celebrity (if that what you want to call it) the best way you know how. Unfortunately RuPaul is still the reigning drag queen on the circuit, but you throw shade like the rest of the lot. You dragged me in with your title thinking that just maybe you had a change of heart and even on your worse day you couldn't deny the Williams sisters their day in the spotlight. But as sure as the oak tree throws shade on the lawn beneath it, you have managed to cast your ugly shadow with this blog. If you are your followers read this thread I hope you are filled with guilt and admonishment for the choice of words used to describe thise American Champions.

I don't know where Martin Rogers learned his writing. His adjectives are weird to say the least. Richard Williams decided to breed daughters who will be tennis champions! In the first place, does he possess any tennis pedigree to "breed" champions? Why didn't he decide to "breed" sons instead of daughters? This writer makes me cringe several times. "Breed"?

Are you serious? I think you're the only person who doesn't care. Had the final involved almost anybody else (Sharapova vs a Williams being the exception) nobody would care. Now I'm a week-in week out tennis fan and I'm saying this, never mind the casual, grand slam who watches tennis but four times a year. You think they're looking forward to a Safina vs Dementieva final? Can you say double fault . . .

    GO WILLIAMS!!!!
The reality is the womens tennis game has one big problem. The william sisters dont look the way the wealthy tennis venues wish they do , which is white. And, they are phenomenal atheletes and are so dominant that the rest of the womens tournament can only bring victory over the williams with negative racists remarks or flat out disrespectful attacks.
But, as someone who loves the way they look, the way they play and their attitude, and includes their father as the best trainer who is not called on to train players. (the trainer of the two best players in the world is not called on to train any female tennis stars.) I speak for all like me and say loudly
    GO WILLIAMS!!!!!

Roddick will be in the finals, he can do it, if he puts his mind to it. Maybe, just maybe, he can beat Federer if he makes it to the finals. That would be quite an upset and I'd love to see it happen.
    Go Andy Roddick, Go.
Venus will probably beat her baby sister, but not without a fight from baby sister.

I think that most of you guys are reading the "breed" thing out of context. What Martin is trying to say is that Richard bred daughters that would change the tennis world. Nothing about race or anything of the sort. And from Richard's himself, he said that this was his goal. He wanted to breed two champions who would stand atop the tennis world. So, in order for you to get what Martin is trying to say, you have to finish the sentence; if you don't, you're just misrepresenting his quote.
I would say that what Martin meant to say in using "breed" is that Richard "trained" two daughters to be the best in tennis. From a young age the sisters were bred to be champions. However, I must agree that diction of this sort does conjure images of racehorses rather that people. And while I would like everyone to finish the sentence, I still think that Martin is a prick.

So presumable Rogers didn't actually see last year's final, which was extremely competitive even though it did not go to a third set. He must have missed Serena's brilliant beginning, and Venus's comeback when she was serving 120 mph serves into Serena's body.

maybe you should read it again. dont try to clean it up for him it was racist and you know it, might even condone it. as it clearly states started before they were even born when richard williams decided to breed daughters who would change the tennis world. and if you`re going to quote someone you should do it correctly. as richard williams said `he would build` them to be champions that would change the the tennis world. you breed dogs, groom horses, raise kids and with all said you `build` champions.
