Busted Racquet - Tennis

It's been 51 days since Serena Williams threatened an official at the U.S. Open, yet there's still no word from the International Tennis Federation as to whether the 11-time Grand Slam champion will be suspended from any tournaments as a result of the tirade. The WTA's chief executive said three weeks ago that the investigation was "ongoing" and that a decision was expected by the end of the year. Our question: What's taking so long?

This isn't the Warren Commission. There aren't any grassy knolls or magic bullets or vague connections to Frank Sinatra. The lineswoman called a foot fault, Serena yelled, was assessed the point penalty and the match was over. That's it. From start to finish the incident took less than three minutes. Other than talking to Serena, the lineswoman and, perhaps, the chair umpire, what else is there to investigate? It's not like any new information is going to come to light.

With the WTA season completed, it may not seem like a big deal for the ITF to prolong the investigation now. (Even though, as stated above, there's no reason for them to.) But it's better for the organization to make a decision as quickly as possible. As wrong as she was, Serena doesn't deserve to be strung along for three months.

Waiting also could do damage to tournament organizers in Australia. The Open isn't going to see too much of an effect if Serena is suspended since those tickets will sell regardless. But Serena has already committed to a tournament in Sydney the week before. She will be the main selling point and organizers will doubtlessly be marketing the women's tournament around her. If Serena is barred from playing in the major, there's not much chance of her making the trip to Australia for a tune-up event.

Williams was fined $10,000 at the U.S. Open after the outburst, the maximum on-site penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. This current investigation was said to have begun that same night by Bill Babcock, the top administrator for Grand Slam tournaments.

It continues today. If the ITF has any sense, it won't continue much longer.

The chances of her being barred from the Australian Open are close to 0. That would be the stupidest thing they could do. She's the biggest name in women's tennis by far and they need her to be playing. And I'm sure she's been given an idea of her punishment behind the scenes, but they are waiting for the heat from the incident calm down before making a public decision. That's usually the best way to go about this sort of thing.

The longer it takes the less of a wrist slap she will receive. After all, it only took her 3 days to finally say the right things when making her feeble apology. If she had of been anyone else she would have been punished by now.

If President Obama can't make a decision on Afghanistan and the health reform bill , then obviously the ITF can't make a decision on Serena. A swift suspension and huge fine should have been rendered. It's politics as usual. A lot of talk yet nothing to back it up.

Dustin, she is the main attraction. Even you watch her to see he lose. You read the article out of hate. You follow her story to see her punished. You watch her to see her lose. She owns you because you hate her. And yahoo Tennis just made more money from advertising because your read this article and posted a message of hate, causing me nad others to respond by agreeing or disagreeing with you, hence even more money for Yahoo, thanks to Serena! For the rest of us, we watch her out of love. Love or hate, Serena =Kaching$$$$ for tennis!!!! More than boring Henin. Serena invokes emotions of love or hate from tennis fans AND non tennis fans, which =MONEY for tennis. Staid and quiet Henin appeals to tennis fans only=less money.

The ITF is irresponsible and unprofessional for dragging out their decision, and yet they have these double standards on-court behavior for women vs men, Americans vs non-Americans, and white people vs black people...........it is rare that I agree with Busted Racquet, but I do this time.............WTF is taking so long?...........they are doing to her what Brian the dog did to Stewey the baby on "Family Guy".............trying to emotionally torment her............, because between Azarenka touching an umpire, Connors dropping F-bombs and rubbing out marks under review with only a "scolding", and Tarango's wife slapping the hell out of an umpire and fined only $60,000 plus suspending him, they know they have nothing.........Serena knows she was wrong, admitted it, apologized, and that blind judge still got away with a bogus call! Not fair in the least!!

The issue here is body language, not words. She is strong, athletic, big, black. If we really examine what she said, she didnt call the umpire names. Roddick calls the stupid all the time. Others call them ridiculous, idiots etc. Serena sais she would shove the ball down her throat if she could. Thats hyperbole. No one could do that! But because she is a big, athletic, strong, black "monkey", waving a raquet, people (including the umpire) interprtetd it as "I will kill you!" Perceptions, perceptions. Its a double standard, really. If a petite white girl had done that, she would not have come across as a mass murderer.

IF YOU HAVE A LIGHT...BEWARE...This was shared with me tonight. I cannot make this thing go away because it has taken up residence in the bodies of more than a few who post here. If I do not share this with you, I don't know who will.
I am a demon and my name is WOE. I have existed since the beginning of time. Like the rest of my brotheren, it is my objective to seek out people who may try to bring light into dark places and run them away. It is in darkness that I can hide and perform my deeds undetected and convince people that I do not exist. I cannot stand you people with your flickering candles murmering about good this and good that...BE GONE with your weak pleading and crying. I have defeated much greater than you whom I consider to be a minor irritation. The people here don't need or want you here. Don't you see how they ignore you? You are more blind than they. I will continue just as I please until you realize to yourself WOE IS ME. I now have people here who are on automatic and all I have to do is make sure people like you don't come in here stirring things up. You are a nobody and your faith is very weak. Your God will not save you because I have brothers working on you right now. SAVE YOURSELF while you still can...at least for a while. I have a brother named DESPAIR that I will have to come into your life and another brother named MISERY who, when teamed together will make your life a living hell. SAVE YOURSELF while there is still time.

SUSPENSION IS TOO SEVERE. Lawsuits left and right...
If her behavior was bad enough to suspend it would have been done the next day or before she even played doubles.
This is absolutely crazy, especially when the world of tennis is being exposed by Andre Agassi and what they let him get away with. That is here nor there, but my point is that a suspension would be overstepping, and having heard from the lineswoman now, I think she agrees.

I agree a decision should have been taken before now . personally, I think losing the match itself was probably penalty enough although I have to laugh at Chris Chase's assessment of the situation : -
" The lineswoman called a foot fault, Serena yelled, was assessed the point penalty and the match was over. That's it "
Next time I go up to a complete stranger and threaten to fu**in' kill them and hurl other verbal abuse and physically intimidate them by screaming in their face whilst holding a tennis racquet - i'll just explain to the police that I was simply yelling and that was it when I get arrested :)

As I stated in one of my earlier posts. If they were to suspend her, it would be a "Public Relations' nightmare for them. The ITF would look so ridiculous, vindictive, racist, people would think they are on a witch hunt against Serena. They should have taken actions weeks ago, and now that it is too late to do anything to her. They have put their foots in their mouths and now they cannot pull it out. Serena sells tickets, and not to mentioned they have planned their venue around Serena. Serena is too good and valuable to the WTA and their oranizers besides she is their 'CASH COW' Why would anyone wants to suspend the great Serena, Afterall, she is going to be the main attraction in Australia in 2010. There is not going to be any suspension, Andre Agassi also admitted to using drugs and got away with it. What Serena did was a minor infraction, players have done much worse and still they have gotten away with it. Serena have become a 'Thorn in the WTA "side, and not to mention she have been spoiling their 'White Party' for the past fourteen years, because she has won so many tournaments and they want her gone. Just like I predicted last week, she would win the YEC. Folks there are more trophys to come because, Serena will take all four Grand Slams in 2010. Just wait and see.
As for as Justin comments are concerned, before he starts calling Serena a "etiquetteless monkey' he should take a look at his MOTHER AND SISTERS,.

they don't have the guts to ban her as they should
the ATP throwing the case out against Andre Agassi and this lingering case that should have been settled on the spot as soon as she threatened that lady are proofs that WTA/ITF/ATP tour are a bunch of punks
