Serena Williams is swift to deflect any suggestion she is feeling the pressure at this year's French Open, insisting her only concern at the moment is that older sister Venus has the bigger bedroom in their Parisian apartment.

Even ownership of the property - Serena splashed out on the lavish residence in 2007 - hasn't secured the world No. 2 prime boudoir position. But she may soon have far more serious problems to tackle.

Williams' first-round victory over Klara Zakopalova on Tuesday snapped a three-match losing streak on clay but did little to inspire confidence in her ability to win at Roland Garros for the first time since her sole title here in 2002.

Whereas tournament favorite Dinara Safina looked imperious in her opening-round match, thrashing Anne Keothavong without losing a single game, Williams appeared short on fitness, form and ideas.

Oh how Williams, still experiencing some discomfort from the leg injury that has plagued her since March, would have loved a quick day's work.

Instead, she was caused untold headaches by Zakopalova, ranked No. 100 in the world. The Czech underdog saved eight match points before eventually going down 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

After winning the Australian Open at the start of the year and bidding to preserve her Grand Slam dream, Williams should be the player to fear in the women's draw. Instead, she has rarely looked more vulnerable, and second-round opponent Virginia Ruano Pascual will be eyeing an upset.

If Williams does crash out early, few tears will be shed in the Roland Garros crowd.
Despite her claims about how much she loves Paris, the French capital does not necessarily reciprocate that affection.

French Open fans are notorious for being quick to turn against players, and Williams was famously on the receiving end of boos and jeers while playing Justine Henin in 2003. Anti-American feeling in France remains relatively high, and no Grand Slam will ever feel more like enemy territory for Williams.

If she can overcome the hostility of the locals, her physical concerns and her natural aversion to clay - and go on to win the tournament - it would arguably be the greatest triumph of her career.

With no surprise, Rogers fails again. I initially thought it was a decent article until I read his interpretation/thoughts on the French crowd at Roland Garros. Quite some time has passed since the jeering Serena received in 2003, 6 years to be exact, and I can't imagine the crowd will be comprised of the same individuals it was back then. Federer was just recently jeered at a masters event where he lost to Djokovic. Following Rogers' poor logic, it dictates those tennis fans would not want to see Federer play the tournament again. Right. When you do something not to the liking of the fans, you get jeered, and Parisians will pounce on any opportunity to become vocal during a match. Rogers knows little about tennis and even less about tennis fans. I am still waiting for a response from him and Yahoo! as to why he continues to write for the sport and how he is still employed. Give his post to an intern, as it can't get much worse.

serena looks like a mess out there, and i'm one of her top fans. her fitness is obviously lacking and i think that's the only thing it really is. if she wins this tournament, i agree, it will be the biggest slam of her career. but i don't expect her to get past the second round, she seems like she's dead out there. rest up for Wimbledon, baby!

Serena should not have toot her horn that she is the true number 1. She is being challenged by someone who is ranked 100. Pay Safina some respect. She palyed the tournaments and have had the results so Serena, be humble enough to respect the ranking system.

Martin Rogers is a complete idot for this post. Rogers gave a bias opinion. Serena's fitness was not the cause of her delayed victory. Serena did not have a rookie first round opponent like Safina so to compare their play is ludacrious. Serena's opponent was very tough and likely would have gave anyone problems. The conditions today were horrible because it was very windy and the ball was flyin everywhere and it made it hard for Aces which is a key part of Serena and Venus game (Their Serve). i think Serena does have a up hill battle but I believe she can do it like she has many times before. Good Luck Serena and just ignore all your doubters.

So, when Hingis cruised into the French Open not ever dropping a set - and then lost to Graf...a much older Graf, at that...what signals should we have seen that Hingis was on her way to an uphill battle, Roger?
Venus won 2 clay court tournaments...and some of them 3 sets. So, your theory is more like a colander...full of holes. lol.

lets not forget the serious thrashing Serena gave Dinara Safina!
if Serena wants to pummel someone she sure can!
its never a battle for her when she is super hungry! and we all know that! Venus is her most serious battle!
althought i like jankovic and sveta and dinara! but they cant come close to A FIT AND HUNGRY AND ANGERED SERENA WILLIAMS!
SO ALL THE HATERS CAN HAVE THEIR FLAWED AND BIASED THEORIES ON HER!
WHATS REALLY ASHAME IS THE HATERS ARE MAINLY
    "WHITE AMERIACANS'
    FROM HER OWN COUNTRY
DO WE NOT FORGET THAT THEY ARE THE ONLY REASON WHY THE USA HAS GOLD OLYMPIC MEDALS AND THE ONLY REASON WHY WE CAN EVEN TALK TENNIS IN ANY COUNTRY!
BECAUSE OF THE TWO [AFRICAN AMERICAN QUEENS]
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME ANDY RODDICK WON A [GRAND SLAM]? PLZ TELL ME! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Elena needs go for more on her forehand and I feel needs to play more from within.
She also needs to speak more Russian-like she did practicing as a kid at home.
She needs to go back to this time in her life to move forward with her tennis today.
She is an excellent player. Fun to watch. A style that you remember.
Her gold medal victory at the Olympics is an example of her great talent.
A top 10 regular she is as gifted as she is graceful. Win or lose-she wins.
As far as I am concerned-
The French Prime Minister should host a formal dinner for all the players at once.
Please make sure to show the calories on the menu.
Also! Change the number of cheeks that should be kissed to four.
    Being funny-please to forgive...
Just an FYI for the official scorer-
Venus Williams doesn't actually need to say anything to remind me of her in any bedroom.
But if she said something-I would mull it over.
After several dates of course. Prudes Rock.
Look at the time! I gotta run!

if Serena wins this event, it will prove what a mess the WTA Tour is right now. There's just no way she should be able to walk in to this event on a 4 match losing streak, including 0-3 on clay this year and win. The tour NEEDS someone else, anyone else to win just show that you can't do that.

How is it possible that Americans and TV commentators don't understand French disliking for Serena Williams?
She plays a brutish game, has an incredible bad taste, and a ridiculous sense of self-importance that offends
Europeans. It is a little like like the poor ambassadors we send to basketball competitions ...

I love Serena, but I will say today's match against the Czech girl--Serena was far from her best, but she still pulled it out. I'm old school--bring back Aussie Evonne Goolagong--she was a class act and won the French Open way back in 1971!!!

#5: You have a point. If I'm not mistaken, at the 2007 Wimbledon Venus was pushed to a 3rd set in her first 2 matches, and if my memory serves me well, she was on the brink of defeat in one of those matches. The end result: She won the whole thing.
If I'm tempted to play the devil's advocate here, it is only for THIS reason: I don't think Serena should have played this year's French Open. Her knee hasn't been the same since she twisted it in the Sony Ericsson semifinal match against Venus. She was favoring that knee throughout her finals loss to Azarenka, and since then she has gone into every tournament with that knee wrapped. Should it be any surprise as to why she hadn't won a match since the Sony Ericsson?
She went through the entire match today with a knee strap, which means that, even if she is in good shape now, that knee could give way (yet again) at any time.
Not good. I hope she's putting plenty of ice on it.

Sir Martin Rogers, your tennis commentary is biased and chauvinistic in nature. You almost always judge the players based on their country of origin. Perhaps you've forgotten how a French player was treated last year in Wimbledon by British crowd while playing against your own Andy Murray. I don't mind to read your comments about a player fitness level or technical abilities (or lack thereof). You never hide your emotions or sorrow when the inexperienced British players fail to win a single game. Whether Williams sisters win or loose in French Open or any future tennis tournament, they don't have to prove their tennis talents to a prejudiced "expert" such as yourself.

to all the haters out their even if Serena doesnt do well in France she can still go home to her other 10 GRAND SLAMS titles and use them as comfort! BTW if u get all the top 20 players of the wta and put together all their grandslam titles would it equal the 10 titles that Serena has? ( its just a question )

@Paco: Keothavong is NOT a rookie in the WTA. She is the current no.1 British player who turned pro in 2001.
And she is ranked way higher than Zakopalova.
To say that Safina had a much easier match because Keothavong is not as tough as Zakopalova is far more ludicrous.
Your post is full of excuses.
Can you confidently say that Serena had a good performance in that first-round match?

Serena's a great champion but she's got too much junk in the trunk these days. She needs to lose about 30lbs if she wants to do well on clay.

"If u get all the top 20 players of the wta and put together all their grandslam titles would it equal the 10 titles that Serena has?" As a matter of fact, YES. The top 20 combined would have more slams. #3 Venus has 7 slams, #7 Kuznetsova has one, #8 Ivanovic has one and #16 Mauresmo has two slams under her belt. That's a total of 11 excluding Maria Sharapova who if not through injury, would also be in the top 20 and has 3 slams under her name. Therefore, a total of 14 slams against Serena's 10. Get your facts straight before making assumptions.

I do not think Serena had a good First match because she is a lil rusty and she is coming fresh off injury but since you want to be technical how about tomorrows opponent. Safina faces Vitalia Diatchenko have you heard of her thought so maybe because she is ranked 153rd in the world right now but Venus is facing Lucie Safarova and she is ranked 46th in the world. Safina's opponent is at her first french Open appearance and Venus opponent is at her 4th French Open appearance so answer that Joe. Lucie Safravoa is a millionare and the other girl has only won 49 thousand to date and she is just 19. Venus and serena have a tougher draw but yet Safina is the best player in the world. Also for your information Anne Keothavong maybe good in Britain but in the world she really aint that good. This was her first French Open and the furthest she ever made it in a grand slam was 3rd round at Wimbledon and it only happened once. Anne Keothavong always gets eliminated in the first round check her stats!

#27: So what you are trying to say is: since Diatchenko is ranked lower than Safarova,
then Safina would not have as much trouble with Diatchenko, as Venus might against Safarova.
But yesterday, how come Serena had so much trouble against Zakopalova who is ranked way lower than Keothavong? ;)
Safina, on the other hand, very easily won her match against the 49th-ranked Brit.
I'll check my stats, but please check your logic.
