MILAN (AP) — Inter Milan has completed the signing of Gabriel Barbosa, known as Gabigol, from Brazilian club Santos. Gabigol signed a five-year contract on Tuesday, the day of his 20th birthday. Italian media reported a transfer fee of €28 million ($31.2 milion). The forward, described as "the new Neymar" by some pundits in Brazil, has scored two goals in four appearances for Brazil's senior side and also helped its Olympic team to a first ever gold medal in Rio de Janeiro. Gabigol has spent the past four seasons at Santos, winning the Campeonato Paulista the past two seasons.
As Inter look for a low-cost solution to strengthen their defence, they are set to make a play to take Matteo Darmian on loan from Manchester United. Following the fireworks of last Friday when Joao Mario and Gabigol (who is expected to formalise the move today) arrived, the Nerazzurri aren't quite finished their transfer business yet. On Monday, Frank de Boer held a meeting with the club's finances chief Giovanni Gardini and sporting director Piero Ausilio to put plans in place for the final 48 hours of the transfer window.
