An already banged-up U.S. soccer team lost four more players heading into Tuesday's World Cup qualifier at Panama, including two starters from Friday night's 6-0 victory against Honduras. Midfielder Sebastian Lletget, defenders John Brooks and Michael Orozco, and forward Jordan Morris were dropped by U.S. coach Bruce Arena, who added midfielder Paul Arriola on Saturday.
Cristiano Ronaldo made history on Saturday in World Cup Qualifying against Hungary. After scoring a sweet goal in the first half , he scored an even better one in the second half with a brilliant free kick. And that goal was his 70th international strike, joining the 70-goal club for European players, which also includes just Miroslav Klose and Ferenc Puskas. Here is the goal: What a way to get it. It’s tough enough to go far post, but to do it from that distance is absurd.
By Martyn Herman LONDON (Reuters) - Jermain Defoe justified his recall from the international wilderness by scoring the first goal as England ground out a labored 2-0 win over Lithuania to stay on course for the World Cup finals at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. Substitute Jamie Vardy was also on target for Gareth Southgate's side in a one-sided, dreary victory that kept England top of qualifying Group F with 13 points from five games. It was hardly an emphatic performance against a side ranked 93 places lower than England in the FIFA rankings and Southgate was right to say he would not be eulogizing about it.
