Yahoo! Contributor NetworkSpurs Rumor: Tottenham Hotspur Planning 2012 US Summer Tour
Tottenham Hotspur supporters located in the United States may want to wait a little bit before making plans for their summer vacations.
The Baltimore Business Journal is reporting that Spurs are planning a United States summer tour for 2012. The stories list Baltimore and Los Angeles as two cities slated to host contests. A thus far unnamed American city is also rumored to be part of the tour.
The story located on the Baltimore Business Journal website claims that a Baltimore friendly involving Spurs would take place at M&T Bank Stadium. No potential opponents were listed in any of the stories. One could safely assume, however, that DC United and LA Galaxy would, if Baltimore and Los Angeles are involved, likely face Tottenham this summer.
Spurs last visited the United States two summers ago. The EPL side faced off against Major League Soccer club San Jose Earthquakes. Tottenham then traveled east to play against both the New York Red Bulls and Sporting Clube de Portugal. Those contests took place at Red Bull Arena, located in Harrison, NJ.
The Red Bulls vs. Spurs contest was a big success, largely because former Arsenal legend Thierry Henry had just signed with the MLS side. Henry, in his debut with the Red Bulls, scored the match opener against his rivals. Spurs eventually went on to defeat New York 2-1.
It was reported roughly a week and a half ago that both Chelsea and Liverpool are also making arrangements for 2012 US summer tours. Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park and Toronto are all rumored spots for potential contests involving those two EPL clubs. It's possible that Spurs could link with one or both of those clubs for a four-team tournament similar to the Emirates Cup, a competition last won by the previously mentioned Red Bulls in the summer of 2011.
As a selfish fan of both the Red Bulls and Spurs, I would love nothing more than for Tottenham to be featured in summer friendlies played at Red Bull Arena, Yankee Stadium, Citi Field or MetLife Stadium. With that said, I fully understand the "too much of a good thing" type of thinking, and that it wouldn't hurt to bring other EPL sides to the NYC/NJ area before Spurs return. Besides, treks to Baltimore and Boston are both easy drives for Spurs fans located in and around Manhattan.
Toronto isn't too shabby in the summer months, either.
