Ronaldo must shine in Real’s spotlight

  • Print

A night of partying with Paris Hilton is a test of endurance that would stretch any professional athlete, but for Cristiano Ronaldo, things are set to get even tougher.

Ronaldo, the reigning World Footballer of the Year, celebrated his impending $131 million transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid in fine style with a reported “hookup” with society’s most notorious hotel heiress in Los Angeles, according to the London Daily Mirror.

Ms. Hilton merely needs to snap her fingers and a waiting attendant brings her the object of her desire. For Ronaldo, he’ll have to wait a little longer for the move that he feels will fulfill his soccer dreams.

A year ago, the 24-year-old confessed his wish to leave United – then freshly crowned as the best team in Europe after winning the UEFA Champions League – and join Spanish giant Real. The timing of his revelation prompted months of speculation, contributed to the derailment of Portugal’s Euro 2008 campaign and led to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson digging in his heels to keep his star winger for another year.

At the time, United was determined to hold on to its most prized asset, a decision apparently rewarded by its retention of the English Premier League crown in 2009 and a return to the Champions League final. However, Real would not be denied a second time and the monstrous bid concocted by its president Florentino Perez was enough to persuade United to sell, albeit for a figure with which it can rebuild half its team.

How will Cristiano Ronaldo fare at Real Madrid?

Real Madrid is arguably the most prestigious club in the Latin world and is a fantasy destination for any wide-eyed youngster from Spain or Portugal. After six years at United, in which he has grown from a flashy teenager into the best player on the planet, Ronaldo may feel there is no more he can accomplish at Old Trafford.

Yet if he believes that moving to the Spanish capital will be smooth sailing, then he will be sorely mistaken.

Sure, Ronaldo will be surrounded by other superstars next season, with Real having already splashed cash on Kaka from AC Milan. More big buys are on the way, as the days of “The Galacticos” have returned along with Perez’s policy of going out each summer to recruit the very best and most famous players in the world.

Such transfer spending will generate copious media attention, but it also brings unprecedented pressure, most of which Ronaldo will bear the full brunt.

Questions regularly have been raised about his big-game mentality, especially after this year’s Champions League final in which he was outshone by Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta. But the scrutiny now will be more intense.

United does a magnificent job of protecting its players from the glare of the spotlight. When Ronaldo arrived as a multi-million dollar youngster in 2003, he was largely able to go about his business in a bubble-wrapped cocoon. That won’t be the case at Madrid.

The club is desperate for success after seeing hated rival Barcelona sweep to a sensational treble of trophies with titles in La Liga, Spanish Cup and Champions League. Last season brought several humiliations to Real, none more so than a 6-2 drubbing at the hands of Barca.

Ronaldo is the man who is expected to lift the club on his shoulders and build an era of success stretching many years. It is a transfer that could make or break his legacy as a player. If he can lead Real to a prolonged period of glory, he will go down as one of the game’s all-time greats.

“It’s flattering when two of the top teams in the world want you to play for them,” Ronaldo told Fox Sports en Espanol after stating that his current hernia problem won’t require surgery.

“I learned about the deal here in L.A. and have heard from my people that Manchester United has accepted. However, I have also been told that Madrid want to have a medical team look at me as expected.”

These are interesting times for Cristiano Ronaldo, who is just a doctor’s OK away from the transfer that he craves. A clean bill of health would give him another reason to celebrate in the City of Angels.

Hopefully, he has Paris on speed dial.

Galacticos II. They'll have as much success and trophies as the last bunch. After Beckham left United he became even more rich and famous then he was, but he's still is looking to win a trophy. I see the same fate for Ronaldo. Go Barcelona.

    C. Ronaldo was nobody in the world of football when he came to Old Trafford. Everyrhing he has in his shoulder that is making him feel on top of the world was made possible by Sir Alex. He only display the character of an ingrate by his recent unruly conduct in the pitch.
Man U is greater than any individual player of any profile. I believe the exit of C Ronaldo will provide the right place for Nani to excel.
No player can do so well without a good team, all about Ronaldo to is bcos of the good team Sir Alex built over a long period of time. Greateness is dependent on consistency and that is what Man U stand for, what does Real Madrid has to show is recent time for you to say they are the greatess ever.

Terence C YOU ARE SO FREAKING RIGHT BRO...

What in the HELL, this pseudo reporter is talking about MADRID being the number one team "in the Latin World", this IGNORANT REPORTER doesnt know that like it or not, "REAL MANDRIL" is the most successful team in the ENTIRE WORLD, UNIVERSE, GALAXY, MILKY WAY, ANYWHERE. Madrid and Juventus are the most sucessful teams, both got 31 domestic leagues, the only difference they have is that while My Juve has just 4 CHampions Mandriles got 9...
    Also...
That is why football never gets the respect that deserve in this country because of Stupid people in the media field like this IDIOT. And this goes for all of you that think that Stupid Premier LEague is the best... right look at all those Spaniards players, like Xabi Alonso, Torres, and Reina, who where nobody in Spain, are super stars in such a crappy league, that is matter of just 4 teams all the time.
SPANISH AND ITALIAN LEAGUE are the best, is like whoever plays well in Italy can play pretty much anywhere else, if Del Piero was playing in the OVERRATED Premier league, trust me you were going to think it was God playing football. if not how in the hell English fans think average player like Gian Franco Zola is one of the best in the story??? Easy, since your defensive tactics are so weak so someone with a little bit of the Latin talent, can make looks opposite defenders like robots...

It's strange wonder that a bunch of B grade players can challenge the might of Barcelona and Madrid. Player for player MU is not in the same league as the spanish and italian teams, but some how the English team's self believe has brought them success during these pass seasons. The media hype bad fooled the fans, and even the English's opponents. This is the magic of modern day marketing!

MU did the 100% right decision. Ronaldo is a self-regard person, and he is not a man which cannot be replaced. The reason behind MU lost to Barca is because of his self regard, which was shown to all when he was substututed dring teh match of Manchester City. Let him go away from MU since we are no longer happy to see him with MU

Real Madrid is really trying to buy game but with out key ingredients like Sir Alex and Rooney . Real Madrid bought a name and a man under pressure, now history will be the judge. RM doesn't develop players they buy them. Good luck

finally, some competition. Who wrote that? Real won the last couple of titles before this year. playing inconsitent at the same time and with a different manager like every other month. This year it finally caught up to them. The defense I dont think needs to be revamped. They just need to fix the strategy. They still have excellent defenders. They will still bring in 1 or 2 defenders this summer. I bet the defense will be alot better next year. Now they have Kaka, Ronaldo and probly Villa coming in. Probly even more players. If Huntelaar and Robben stay this team will be siiick. They have 1 of the best young strikers in the world in Higuain. They have excellent players all over the field. Best keeper in the world. They just need to jell and work together. It will be a hard task for the next boss but even at that this team will be untouchable next year unless somehow they fall apart through injuries and things like that. Barca is strong but u aint gonna deny Real this coming year!

You guys might have forgotten, so let me refresh your memories; They also just hired a new coach from Villareal in Pelligrini. He's a hard nose disciplinarian, look at what happened to Argentine, Riquelme, he wasn't playing the way Pelligrini wanted him to so he made the call and had him on a plane back home faster than you can say "$131 million bust!" Don't get me wrong, he's a magnificent player but I don't think he's a fit for this club, even more so, they will now be unbalanced. I figured kaka was going to cause more problems on the pitch, but I now see kaka getting frustrated at Ronaldo loosing the ball as he does when he tries to do too much. If he were easily disciplined, sky's the limit! None the less i will be watching, more so for Kaka.
