Hungary squad honours late striker Feher

LISBON, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Hungary’s squad have paid tribute to striker Miklos Feher who died playing for Benfica in 2004.

The Hungarians, who are preparing for a World Cup qualifier against Portugal at Benfica’s Stadium of Light on Saturday, laid a wreath next to a bust of the player at the stadium.

Feher, aged 24 when he died of a heart attack during a league match, was a former Hungary young player of the year who scored seven goals in 25 international appearances.

“Nobody forgets Miki because he was a great person in Hungarian football and the national squad,” said midfielder Akos Buzsaky.

“He had many friends in the team that plays today and, in his memory, everyone is going to give 100 percent and play the best possible tomorrow,” he added.

Hungary coach Erwin Koeman told reporters: “(It was an) impressive commemoration for Miki, and for me it was very impressive to see his Benfica shirt.”

“It was nice that our team and MLSZ (the Hungarian Football Federation) representatives were there. I think there are more important things than football, and that was wonderful.”
