* Governing body rejects appeal by FA of Ireland

* “Referees’ decisions are final”

(adds detail, background

LONDON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Soccer’s world governing body FIFA has confirmed that the controversial France v Ireland World Cup playoff will not be replayed.

The Irish football association (FAI) appealed to FIFA for a replay after Thierry Henry handled the ball when setting up William Gallas’s extra-time equaliser in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw in Paris that sent France to the World Cup with a 2-1 aggregate win.

However, as was widely expected, FIFA wasted little time in rejecting the plea.

“FIFA has replied to the request made by the FAI to replay the World Cup play-off match between France and the Republic of Ireland,” the body said on its website (www.fifa.com) on Friday.

“In the reply, FIFA states that the result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed. As is clearly mentioned in the Laws of the Game, during matches, decisions are taken by the referee and these decisions are final.”

The FAI said on Thursday that the incident, which dominated news bulletins in Ireland all day as well as being discussed in parliament, had “damaged the integrity of the sport”.

The Irish government supported the call for a replay and Prime Minister Brian Cowen said he would discuss the matter with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Brussels.

However, Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni paved the way for disappointment when he told a Thursday news conference it would be impossible to replay the match.

“I cannot ask this because I know it is impossible. When a referee decides, it ends the game for me,” he said.

The Italian instead criticised FIFA’s late decision to seed the playoff draw and called on the ruling body to scrap extra-time in future playoffs as it handed an advantage to the team drawn at home in the second leg. I don't know what to say on this. Henry even admitted he did handle the ball in the box. They reject his plea and not do anything about it. Wow the FIFA board does need some changing doesnt it?

I think what happened during last France - Ireland game was a fact of game like we can see in many soccer games. It was just a player who took advantage for him and his team when the referees didn't see a fault, it happens a lot of time and it is part of the game. Would it be different if, instead of a handball, Thierry Henry received the ball in offside position not seen by officials and made an assist for a goal? He did a handball and the referee didn't see it and he took advantage of it, that it was. He is a professional player and not a weekend player. In a soccer game, players are used to take advantage of others players' faults and even referees' faults, that's always been the case. I am not sure to remember one player to quit playing himself telling to the referee that he was offside or the penalty kick given to him was unfair. Soccer players takes advantage of any good sittuations. I did it when I used to play myself soccer. It is part of the game, soccer is not rugby or golf .

I can appreciate Theirry request to play the game over....but the reality is that he(and France)don't want to play this game over 'cause they'd most-likely lose...and they know it. He only said this 'cause he knows that all ref's decisions are final and that there is NO WAY in he** that this game would be played over...he(and France)know that as well. If there was a chance that this game would be played over ALL French mouths would be cemented shut. With that said, this was the ref's "fault". Not Theirry's. It was not delieberate(per se), it was an instinctive reaction not pre-meditated. If he's so concerened with fairness, I wonder why he didn't tell the ref that it was a hand ball IMMEDIATELY instead of after the game?...but then again...why would he period with a WC berth at stake. Ireland got hosed, but that's sports sometimes. Can't wait to see Ireland and France play a "friendly". lol

Hey Ireland...learn to finish a 1v1 with the keeper. Teams get screwed all the time by bad ref decisions. France is no stranger to bad calls going against them. That's why you finish your opportunities and take it out of the refs hands.

What happens if they play again and France loses the game on a horrible PK? Are we going to replay the game again? And what if in the 3rd replay Ireland gets screwed by a horrible uncalled offsides and France scores on the play? Are they going to replay the game again?

I hope you idiots asking for a replay understand why FIFA can't replay the game...

    E:

If sport concerns your whole life then by all means dwell on it till your head explodes. I do care, it was sad, but thats that and life goes on and we hope to have a better team next time. Unless you really did think we'd win it all in the world cup, sorry but honestly we wouldn't have won it all. The government should be more concerned about the economy, the flooding and real crime.

You know this is getting out of hand when the Government says they'll discuss it. How ridiculous is that when there are Far more important things to discuss then a sport?! I'm part Irish but i dare anyone who can name me a player that hasn't done something dirty in a game, everyone has cried wolf sometime, everyone does all it takes to win and its up to the refs to call it. Everyone tries to get by with as much cheating without being caught, if the ref doesn't call it then great, this will always be the case till they make body sensors that detects every movement and refs will be obsolete.

As much as i did not support Henry in what he did his action was not pre-meditated anybody would have done it even ME,for God sake we are talking of missing the world cup.Players are the most unpredictable humans cheating means nothing to them we've seen in many games and shapes pulling of shirts, diving to get penalty, besides Henry did not score the goal, galas did so why the hot air Henry only stopped the ball from going out of play, what will you say about the football legend Maradona who scored with his HAND,FRANCE welcome to South Africa............

Let's face it. It is all politics France 63 million poeple or Ireland 6 million people. France is a traditional power is destined to sell more tickets and gain more interest than Ireland would so FIFA doesn't care

The problem is not with henry, or the French or for that matter the Swedish referee. The issue is with those idiots running the game, in this case Platini and Blatter. Blatter has always been an official, eg a bureaucrat so he could be forgiven for believing that one person can watch 22. Come to think of it, he has seen so many matches, he should know by now. as for Platini, he was a brilliant player, but he is an even better politician. He just wants to succeed Blatter, or maybe even become IOC chief, and he will get there. If it means destroying football and a few other sports, who cares. The answer is not instant replay, it would have clarified the situation on Wednesday, but that is an exception most of the time tv cameras are not really conclusive in soccer. The answer is obviously to do what basketball, baseball, hockey, football (the US version) have done. Add referees so that the rules of the game are respected. In soccer you should add a couple behind the goals (true referees, not people with limited power like in the Europa League competition) and probably 1 o 2 more in the field. There can be a head referee that can overrule his colleagues, but his colleagues should be allowed to call fouls. This solution would solve 99% of debatable cases and FIFA would not be in a position to refuse to replay a game become it would set a precedent. (a precedent of doing the right thing, that would indeed be damning!) Now why Blatter refuses to have more referees is beyond my comprehension. Is it possible he truly believes poor publicity like Maradona or Henry's handballs are good for the game, or he is he simply an...!!!! Your pick
