PREVIEW-Soccer-Ronaldo’s return boosts Real for Barca trip

By Mark Elkington

MADRID, Nov 26 (Reuters) - Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to fitness has strengthened Real Madrid in time for their eagerly anticipated trip to face Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Sunday (1800 GMT).

The Portuguese forward was untroubled by the ankle injury that had kept him on the sidelines for the last two months when he came on for the last 20 minutes of Real’s drab 1-0 Champions League win over FC Zurich on Wednesday.

“I’ll definitely be able to play against Barca. I feel good, I want to play, and it is up to the coach whether I go from the start,” Ronaldo told reporters.

Real took first place from Barca in La Liga last weekend and have a one-point advantage over the champions, but as ever the ‘clasico’ is much more than just a top-of-the-table tussle.

It is about a clash of styles, and a chance to see how the new-look Real measure up against their arch-rivals, the treble-winners.

The return of Florentino Perez to the Real presidency has seen them invest around 250 million euros in players such as Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema.

However, under new coach Manuel Pellegrini they are struggling to gel as a unit and to provide the spectacle demanded by the fans. The team have lacked personality and bite in Ronaldo’s absence.

“It’s likely they (the squad) are suffering from excessive anxiety, pressure, criticism, and some aspects of the game are not working well,” Pellegrini said after the visit of Zurich.

“Because of this the team deserve a lot of credit to be where they are now. We aren’t playing badly, we just aren’t entertaining.”

TEAM ETHIC

Barcelona are still winning plaudits for their eye-catching football, played with a squad of largely homegrown talent and built around a strong team ethic.

Tuesday’s impressive 2-0 Champions League win over Inter Milan was achieved without two of their biggest names, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lionel Messi, who were on the bench nursing thigh injuries.

They were barely missed as Barca ended an indifferent run of form in which they drew three of their previous five matches in all competitions.

“If we look at the stats, Barca don’t score more goals than us and don’t concede fewer, and we have more points,” Pellegrini added. “I admit the style of play is different. They have a well-defined concept and we are in search of something different to previous years.”

Ibrahimovic and Messi look set to recover in time to help unbeaten Barca defend their 100 percent record at home in the league.

Real have lost only once so far, away to Sevilla last month, but have nine wins from 11 and will be keen to erase the memory of their last meeting with Barca in May, when they were humiliated 6-2 at the Bernabeu.

“We need to be prudent and respectful because they are the leaders,” defender Gerard Pique told Barca TV.

Third-placed Sevilla visit basement side Malaga on Saturday (2100 GMT), and fourth-placed Valencia host Real Mallorca (1900), who are sixth.

Im a manu fan and i was glad to see ronaldo go. the way he would take dives and if the ref didnt give him the call, he'd sit there for four or five seconds on his knees complaining. then, he wouldnt even rush downfield to get the ball back. at least tevez fought for the ball. ronaldo is a whiney prick and now he's surrounded by other whiney pricks. he should do fine.

Here's the thing Messi's brilliant no question about it however he's been with Barcelona since joining their youth ranks thus he's a one-team-player which is quite fine however you do not get to see how he will perform in another leagues/teams (personally I think he wouldn't stand a chance at the EPL) now take Ronaldo who just made a historic move to Real moving from the EPL to La Liga, expectations riding high and he's already performing up to standards without being fully comfortable at La Liga now in a few months time I would love to see what he'll be capable of once fully established in his new environment. So IMO Messi did perform better than Ronaldo this past year and will most likely be named No. 1 in the world however come next year and assuming Ronaldo continues in top form and adapts to the style of Real and La Liga clearly he'll regain his title. Both are great but CR has the greatest opportunity to show why HE IS THE BEST showing he can perform in any league and for any big team unlike Messi who will most likely spend his entire career at Barcelona. So yeah CR9 ... can't wait to see him rip defenses to pieces. And yes I do believe he's still the best in the world. Plus if I where Messi I would hate to be compared to a drug addict, unlucky, selfish a.s.s like Maradona ... hopefully for Messi (whose playing I do enjoy) Argentina will make the cut but I'm starting to doubt it. =|

passes and dribbling better. I would love to see them play on the same team.

Messi beat Ronaldo in the Champions League final. CR could do was to shoot from any range and dhen cry, get angry without giving a single pass to Rooney. Messi won in dribbling, passing and in scoring too. MESSI is the BEST SOCCER PLAYER RIGHT NOW.!!! He would score if not make superb assists, like the one he assisted in recently concluded EUFA SUPERCUP FINAL.

Messi is just in a league of his own. He has a sixth sense that only a few players have even had a taste of (Pelé, Maradona, Cruyff). It's just a matter of staying healthy for him, and doing it for many years to come. Ronaldo is a great player, but he's not in Messi's class, no one is.

Both players are overated! it is ridiculous their national teams performances, these players are the Maradonas and Pele of our time, imagine if they failed to qualify their countries to the world cups, would they be remmembered as great players? would they be in the history of world soccer success? I don't think so! of course they are good but playing a competition of 40 plus games is much easier than playing the qualifying games for the world cup and the w.c itself, plus Messi is surrounded by other excellent players and so is Ronaldo who now have the best play maker of today's soccer Kaka. If both miss the world cup it will be the most embarrassing thing in their career... Good luck!

Barca and Real are making the money worth it. But, they are not alone. Chelsea is looking like they are trying to break the unbeaten streak coming out the gate with manu trying to prove something. I think the top teams in la liga, seria a, and the premiership are all pulling away early. Really putting stamps on who are the best teams in UEFA.
PErsonally, Chelsea already has the premiership. They are playing great and I don't think ManU can beat them. We shall see, but I don't think so. Drogba is really playing great soccer, and chelsea looks like they have a purpose.
The question is not whether barca or real are playing great but when all is said and done, if barca does another treble. Real will be in an interesting scenario. As for Inter.
    CMON ETO!!!!!!!

UEFA leagues top teams are setting up to have an even greater champions league
