MILAN, Nov 22 (Reuters) - AC Milan were imperious in attack but woeful defensively in an enthralling 4-3 home win over Cagliari on Sunday which summed up their topsy-turvy season.

Leonardo’s side, who were 2-1 down before racing into a 4-2 lead, remained third in Serie A with leaders Inter Milan and second-placed Juventus also winning over the weekend.

Clarence Seedorf gave Milan an early lead after some neat passing but the Sardinians were ahead on the half-hour after Alessandro Matri and Andrea Lazzari exposed a static defence badly missing the suspended Alessandro Nesta.

More good attacking play pulled Milan back into the match with Marco Borriello heading in and Ronaldinho then setting up Alexandre Pato to fire home late in a frantic first half.

The often inconsistent Ronaldinho, who looked refreshed following the international break, hammered in a penalty in the second half to crown another improved display but Milan’s nerves were fraught in the closing stages after Nene made it 4-3.

“I’ve returned to work and felt good. Let’s hope I can get a few more goals and we can continue like this,” the Brazilian told Sky television.

Inter, who have a five-point advantage after 13 games, won 3-1 at Bologna on Saturday as they chase a fifth straight title.

POWERFUL HAT-TRICK

Juve overcame Udinese 1-0 in a cold Turin in Sunday’s late game after Fabio Grosso popped up in the area to guide in fellow fullback Martin Caceres’s cross early in the second period.

The hosts, who brought on Alessandro Del Piero for only his second appearance of the campaign after injury, continued their habit of failing to find a killer second goal and were lucky that Udinese were blunted by Antonio Di Natale’s suspension.

Francesco Totti had earlier marked his return from almost two months out with a recurring knee problem by scoring a powerful hat-trick in AS Roma’s 3-1 home win over Bari.

The striker, who has retired from Italy duty but has hinted he would consider a return at the World Cup, netted a spot kick before blasting home a free kick and then superbly slamming in from a tight angle all inside the first half-hour.

The win was the perfect tonic for mid-table Roma, whose future ownership remains unclear amid debts and fan unrest.

Walter Zenga’s Palermo drew 1-1 at home with his former club Catania in the Sicilian derby and fourth-placed Sampdoria beat Chievo 2-1 in Genoa for their first win in four games.

Napoli drew 0-0 at home with Lazio while at the bottom Siena are three adrift after a 2-0 home defeat by Atalanta which prompted supporter protests and further weakened the position of interim coach Marco Baroni.

Lowly Livorno grabbed a very late winner to beat Genoa 2-1. The team is not bad, but few adjustments needs to be done. "Boss Mourinho" needs to have two other play makers to meet up his expectations from Eto'o. For him to achieve his goal of winning the champions League, he needs two play maker like Frank Riberry, so he can be able two use two 9s, Eto'o and Milito. Eto'o seems to play more like a play maker which is not the Club's wish. I think Mourinho needs to make this decision as soon as possible as January is fast approaching.

Ya maybe, but still Ronnie was the star and Pato did not play well. He really looked like a shadow of last years Pato, I hope he can regain some fitness and get Milan on a roll pretty soon.

Michael, I saw the game.I was just refering to Ronnies lack of dicipline. We all know about his days in PSG,Barca, and now Milan. He'll probably get his act together just to go to the WC.After the WC he'll go back to his old antics.

Uhhh Ronaldihno was Milan's best player far and away. Pato was sluggish and lacked pace the whole game while Ronnie was creative and precise. Pato only scored because of Ronnies great pass and Pato should've had another that Ronnie delivered, but he choked. Did these guys even watch the whole game? Great win for Milan and encouraging from their stars especially Ronaldinho, FORZA MILAN!!!

the guys that showed me that were a mixed group of Puertoricans, South Americans and Mexicans. Pato = homo. lmmfao. They cracked up when I showed them this article. anyways, that doesn't take away from this guy's skills. He's going to be a huge star, but not in Milan....he needs to go replace Drogba in Chelsea.

Nice dive Nesta; usual Milan "class"; Fatsodinho even classier--invisible until his "heroic" pk. What was he celebrating? The fact he can still move his fat, useless ass? What a joke team.

why i like Jose is that he knows what to do at the right time. So, if you give what he wants he reciprocates. INTER is unstopable!

AC Milan's bosses don't get it! They keep recycling tired players whose performance on the field is far from energetic. As a BIG team, Milan should be buying seasoned players to refresh the spirit of the team just as other teams have been doing, but the directors arent doing that for reasons I can't understand. In soccer, you can't be winnable with such kinds of tired players. AC Milan has been my most loved team; and gone are the days the team paraded great players such as Van Basten, Gullit, Frank Rikyaard, George Weah, Kluivert, of course Maldini, and so on. What's wrong with the patrons of the team, then? Is it poor management?

If you can't win, then draw. If you can't score, then they will never score. That's mourinho.
