Kermit Erasmus May Receive South Africa Senior Call-Up - Reports

South Africa may follow in the footsteps of Ghana who selected at least eight members of their national U-20 squad for the senior team in preparation for their World Cup qualifier by also selecting a couple of players from their World Cup Amajita squad.

Ghana’s Dominique Adiyiah, the Player of the Tournament, and captain Dede Ayew have received senior call-ups and South Africa seems destined to hand Kermit Erasmus and Thulani Serero senior caps as well, according to SuperSport.

It is still early days and it is not quite clear whether the potential selection of Erasmus is an indication that Benni McCarthy’s days as a member of the senior national team are numbered as Katlego Mphela and Bernard Parker have been preferred and now the inclusion of the 19-year old could be a signal that perhaps McCarthy could watch the 2010 event from the comfort of his home.

There is speculation that McCarthy will be brought back, together with Racing Santander’s Nasief Morris, but bringing members of the U-20 squad would be a clear sign that South Africa are perhaps finally wising up to the demands of modern football and are looking to the future.

The South African national team to face both Japan and Jamaica next week will be announced later today but sources within the camp seem to have indicated that Erasmus has caught the attention of senior selectors.
